Technology in Education
In our lives today we expect technology to make a difference, and particularly in furthering our education. We see technologies effects as beneficial. We look for it to change, and improve, what has come before it. Technology is the set of means without which certain kinds of constructive activity would be almost impossible. It supports our efforts to appeal to different learning styles which give us a way to interact with each other and extend the learning experiences. It is a good way to extend the essential skills and knowledge of students. By integrating technology into our educational programs it provides students with additional tools to enhance their learning. Technology allows us to demonstrate teaching strategies and also provide teachers with skills to succeed in the classroom. It changes the structure and the manor in which we learn. Such technologies used in education from the past, present and beyond are the typewriter, computer games, internet, and communication.
The relationship between technology and education can be characterized as a process of change and innovation. In the beginning societies depended on oral communication then the written language was developed. Making an alphabet made learning to read and write much easier then in the past. As technologies of written language became prevalent and more people became literate social structures formed. The next big step towards a better education was the industrial revolution. Technology plays a very important role in today’s society. Everyone has a smart phone and we crave the latest and greatest televisions, computers, cell phones and tablets. Some of these include iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, Samsung Smart TVs, Samsung Smart watches and the new Google Glass. More and more schools are using technology in their teaching methods including our own one-to-one program at Oxon Hill High School where each student received a Samsung Google Chromebook. Technology should be used in school’s curriculum and instruction because of improved communication, innovations to come and convenience to both the students and the teachers.
“Before you become too entranced with gorgeous gadgets and mesmerizing video displays, let me remind you that information is not knowledge, knowledge is not wisdom, and wisdom is not foresight. Each grows out of the other. And we need them all” (Re-inventing 1995). These words spoken by the distinguished author, Arthur C. Clarke, bring to light where exactly the technological situation in education is and the direction it is going. The discussion and debate of introducing and improving classrooms with technology has been a relatively heated topic as of late. Many have even claimed that if schools are to survive it is imperative for us to stand back and carefully rethink our notions of intelligence, learning, instruction, and evaluate the situation in light of the new age of communication. In discussing the use of technology in education a distinction needs to be made between itself and ‘tech ed’. The common definition of technology education is that it is an action based program for all students to use resources to design, produce, use, and assess the impacts of products and services that extend human potential to improve and control the natural and human made development (Patterson 1999). While these skills and practices are integrated into using technology in education it does not fully explain or utilize what is needed to provide affective technology in the classroom. In 2009, around 97 percent of classrooms had one or more computer, while 54 percent could bring computers into the classroom. Internet access was available for 93 percent of the computers, and the ratio of students to computers in the classroom was 5.3 to 1 (“Educational” par.1). Just four years ago, technology was an increasingly important tool in education. The benefits of technology are always changing and improving. The use of computer labs has evolved into every student having access to their own personal hand-held device or laptop. Because of this, teachers have new ways to provide information and can change the way they teach. More hands on interaction is present when the students can find the information on their own using these devices. Many new techniques such as the flipped classroom are emerging trends that are used in our school and many others. Schools all across the United States are slowly moving away from the traditional method of pencil and paper learning. Taking notes on a computer in school or even at home is gaining popularity. Technology should be used in education because it makes learning faster and easier, gives students an opportunity to learn more information that may not be provided by textbooks and allows students to immerse themselves in technology at an early age.
Within technology comes the gateway to almost everything that is out in the internet, it opens a whole new world to the students and the teachers that use them. The outcome of the uses, if they happen to be good or bad, come from the restrictions and the management of usage of said technology inside a classroom. Educators see firsthand how the used in their daily lives influence how a student learns. Thanks to technology not only has students and teachers changed the ways they learn and teach, learning itself has changed as well. It is not only crucial to have the technological tools needed in a classroom, but also an educator that can mend and mold the technology to their rightful use. The use of technology in a classroom not only expands the tools and gadgets, not to mention adds much needed knowledge that will help students later on in life, but also brings a whole new and better way to teach and learn.
As we progress further into the 21st century, our society is quickly becoming more and more integrated to technology. The creations of new laptops and tablets, and the easy access to new and improved phones have driven younger generations to recruit to these advances as well. The quick and widespread implementation of these technological advances has shaped the new way we conduct our daily lives, as well as how knowledge is processed and taught in our classrooms. Today's technology provides teachers, as well as students, with opportunities for teaching and learning that were impossible in the past. Technology is being used as a tool to promote human learning, not just calculators, but including Smart Boards, tablets (iPads), video cameras, Portable Digital Assistants and of course, computers. They can be used as tools to create instructional materials or as presentation devices to provide information in ways never before possible. While technology can be useful for easy communication and industrial development, the proper use of technology in the classrooms can be crucial to students in the 21st century.
There are several good reasons everyone argues that more and/or better technology be incorporated into our schools, but do they ever consider the arguments of why too much technology in school has a negative impact? They should be if not, i will present them today. Some factors schools should consider when it comes to technology is internet safety, teacher training,budget,distraction and overall the effect it has on younger generations mind.
Technology is Changing Education The best method for improving educational standards is to utilize every tool available, including state-of-the-art technology. Computers and the Internet have expanded the way in which education can be delivered to the students of today. Today's networking technologies provide a valuable opportunity to the practice of learning techniques. Educators are discovering that computers and multi-based educational tools are facilitating learning and enhancing social interaction. Computer based telecommunications can offer enormous instructional opportunities, but educators will need to adapt current lesson plan to incorporate this new medium into all the classrooms.
Living in the 21st century, our world revolves around technology and electronics. Almost everybody has a smartphone, laptop, and a television. People of my generation would find it hard to live without some form of technology or electronic device. So why is it such a controversial idea to use technology in a school setting? Since technology tends to be used for recreational purposes so often, people do not realize that they can be a great tool to help students learn in a more fun and relatable way, can help teachers teach in the classroom, and allow people to take online classes. Another great use for technology in education is to provide people with disabilities or people in very rural areas an opportunity to learn via e-learning.
Computers and technology have changed education in many ways. Students now have more access to computers to utilize the vast knowledge that is out there. With helpful teaching programs students can interact with what they are learning and get a more rounded education. The Internet provides endless knowledge at the click of a button. Articles and information that once were unreachable are now in our grasp. Videoconferences and interactive television open opportunity that was thought to be impossible. The better the technology gets the better education will become.
Technology has become convenient in all aspects of twenty-first century life and its use in the field of education is no exception. Technology is beneficial to today’s classrooms because it allows teachers to engage students in more active participation and learning, assists with formative assessment, and better enables teaching to all students possessing various learning styles and preferences. Technology has revolutionized the nation in recent years and its role in education is vital. There are many different uses of technology in education, hardware and software, and the methods and modes are constantly changing and evolving to better meet the needs of teachers and students. Formative assessment in and of itself can be an incredibly useful tool to teachers allowing them to gage student understanding and comprehension. A teacher’s ability to utilize technology effectively can have a positive and lasting effect on both teaching style and student learning.
In conclusion, technology has changed education for the better allowing access to unlimited resources, distance learning and broadening the means of communication. Technology creates a more encouraging environment and stimulates students to engage in something they may be familiar with. Technology has allowed people to know more and to collaborate with each other. Students have a great range of technologies which strengthens the relationship between knowledge and students. The technology used today throughout the world will only strengthen and advance the 21st century education system. With unlimited resources, students can take advantage of their learning and gain the most from it. Integrating technology into education promotes a better learning community.
Technology affects every aspect of our lives. From romance to business, it has shown its presence everywhere. But technology has had a huge impact on education that cannot be denied, and has done nothing but improve the quality and quantity of education.
Modern technology has made it so much easier to obtain educational information for classroom or homework assignments. It offers educational games that stimulate the brain and help children who have difficulties focusing on traditional teaching and learning procedures. College students are even taking advantage of online courses that many colleges are offering as an alternative to physically attending classes. Advances in technology and computers will continue to play an important role in education for many generations to come.
The introduction of technology into education has revolutionized the teaching quality and learning outcome in the last ten years. The integration of technology into lectures by teachers in classroom has become so natural that both teachers and learners consider computers and their related applications for instruction are “a routine component of the classroom and educational processes in general” (Nuldén, 1999 cited in Buzzard et al., 2011, pp.131-139).
