Interplay Between Dickens's Great Expectations and Carey’s Jack Maggs
Carey’s Jack Maggs is an example of the post-colonial concept of ‘writing back’. That is, the novel although written over a century apart from Dicken’s Great Expectations, is in fact indirectly interacting with this original text. The principal protagonist of Carey’s novel the eponymous Jack Maggs is undoubtedly indebted to the original Magwitch of the Dicken’s novel. Although Carey does not call Maggs, Magwitch, the shared sound of the name immediately prepares us for other similarites. The two characters are both convicts, who for their crimes were deported at an early age to Austrailia, and more particularly both characters settled in New South Wales. While the manner in which Magwitch makes his fortune is a little ambiguous, Maggs’ wealth is a result of brick-making. They also share a common bond in their sponsor of a young man in their homeland, for Maggs, Henry Phipps, and for Magwitch, Phillip Pirrip.
The novel assumes a greater interest if one has some knowledge of the personal life of Dickens, and in the young Tobias Oates there are comparisons to be drawn with the writer of Great Expectations. The events which take place in the novel, occur primarily in 1837, the year in which Dicken’s was beginning to write Oliver Twist, and had just published The Pickwick Papers in 1836 which earned him a small degree of fame. Tobias Oates has also achieved a similar level of stature with his novel Captain...

Many people don’t know that social workers deal with more mental health than any psychologist, psychiatrist and psychiatric nurses combined. Interesting right? I would definitely have thought otherwise. Social work is a very unique field that is overlooked and should have quite a bit more appreciation than it does. Making it in the real world is tough but thanks to social work peoples civil rights are protected, people with mental illnesses are now able to afford humane treatment and society is more in tune with preventing child abuse and neglect. To be successful in the field of social work you have to care about what you are doing, have ethics, and have empathy… social work is not all about the money.
Lean is best defined as “a systematic approach to identifying and eliminating waste (non-value added activities) through continuous improvement by flowing the product only when the customer needs it (called pull) in pursuit of perfection” (Sarkar, 2008, p. 1). Lean thinking along with Six Sigma have generated interest all industries. This can be seen by the countless studies and quality improvement efforts undertaken by many corporations, with training and building staff as certified Lean Six Sigma experts.

Lean Six Sigma is a methodology that creates processes within an organization to cut waste and improve the company’s performance. However, studies have shown that over the past decade applying Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma can create problems for companies financially and potential problems for employees. Companies should take great care before implementing a Lean Six Sigma solution because in some instances, going lean can do more harm than good both financially for the organization as well as destroying employee loyalty and moral.
Throughout Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, the convict under the alias “Magwitch” contains multiple characteristics that split him between two diverse classes. This duality of character and his frequent detainment cause him to desire a change to reinvent himself and leave the convict lower class. By succumbing to a corrupt class system, Magwitch demonstrates the duality of a man wronged by injustice and blinded by vengeance.
Charles Dickens the notorious author of Great Expectations exploits language to its utmost dignification and to an unforeseen approach. This is perceived as a noticeable technique especially towards the presentation of particular characters that are portrayed in a certain and unique manner. This is clearly evident throughout the portrayal of Miss Havisham. Dickens illustrates an unconventional persona in Miss Havisham and appears together to assimilate and refute the civil principles of single women distinctively during the Victorian era. This is clearly evident throughout the line” she had bridal flowers in her hair but her hair was white” The above quote primarily implies that Miss Havisham is restricted under the traumatizing aftermath of the past experience of being jilted on her wedding day and perhaps is still “transfixed” in time. The specific phrase: “but her hair was white” signifies clear contradiction within her description and to an extent suggests a form of corruption in her psychical state. The bridal flowers in her hair over time have turned white yet her physical, men...

Social work practice has become a vital part of our society. They are found in almost every aspect of our community as well as our schools. Social workers are problem solvers that help people deal with daily issues that may become problems that affect them. As our society becomes more challenging, social workers help bridge the gaps for people who face extraordinary challenges in their lives. The social worker’s scope of practice may contain helping at risk or overwhelmed individuals find resources, develop new coping strategies, resolve problems and conflicts, and secure opportunities to improve their quality of life. (Flynn, 2013) Although the scope of practice is basically the same, there are various types of social workers with various levels of education. It doesn’t matter if you are a medical, clinical, school, military, psychiatric or community social worker, the goal is
The social work profession is defined as “a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people (ISFW, ‘Global Definition of Social Work’, 2016).” The definition may be true about the profession but it is more in depth than just that. To me, the profession’s primary focus is to help others through life as much as we can while letting them make their own choices and guiding them. In society, social workers are utilized in many different nonprofit and government roles. They serve the community in many different ways from monitoring parent visits to helping people through mental illnesses. Human beings are so complex and things that happen
