Teaching Morality
In The Night is Dark and I am Far From Home, Jonathan Kozol writes that "The first goal and primary function of the U.S. public school is not to educate good people, but good citizens." (1). He implies that the public school has no function but to turn out people who will vote, pay their taxes, and follow the nations laws without protest. If this is so, and I believe that it is, should the philosophy of the public school system be changed to produce morally upright individuals? I believe that schools should try to produce the best people they can. Many people argue that morals should be taught at home, but that isn't good enough. Some say that good citizens make good people, but I say that that isn't the case.
Many people who believe that morals should be taught at home do not fully examine the times that we are living in. Forty years ago most children were growing up in two parent homes with stay-at-home mothers. At that time, there was ample opportunity to instill morals and ethics into children. They could be told what was right and what was wrong, instead of taking their chances and finding out for themselves. Also, there wasn't as much violence and immorality around them.
Today, however, we are living in the era of single parenthood or two income households. Many children are "latchkey kids," coming home to empty households. Mom and Dad, if they both live under the same roof, might not get home until late at night, when their children are busy with homework or friends, and they themselves are to frazzled from the day's problems to carry on a lengthy conversation any way. ... it, causing my right eye to drift up and out. This "good citizen" that I mentioned could always get laughs out of his friends by imitating the way that I see and walk. My hip and eye problems are not something that I usually think about or choose to dwell upon because they've never stopped my from doing anything that I've truly wanted to do, but every time this guy would make fun of me in my presents, I would feel my cheeks flame red-hot with embarrassment. This guy may have been able to pass as a good citizen, but his acts were not those of a good person.
I must not be the only person that something like this has happened to. There must be many people who were made to feel as embarrassed as I was. However, if we could develop a system that teaches someone how to be a good person, while maintaining the qualities of a good citizen, this doesn't have to happen again.
Homeschooling is becoming a huge trend across America. It does have its downsides to it, just like any other education. Many parents have to worry about the right way of letting their child have socialization. Without proper socialization, a child can lack proper social skills. Many parents fear the temptations public school can provide, so they homeschool their children to bring them up with holy and moral attitudes. No parent wants their child to hang around other children who abuse drugs, alcohol, or can misguide their children down a wrong path. With homeschooling, parents can monitor whom their children socialize with and for how long. Fearing to not have any socialization at all is where parents can go wrong.
Some very good ways to instill proper morals into children is to be a positive role model from the very beginning to them. Take the time out to show them what is considered right and what is considered wrong. Some methods of teaching children good and positive morals are being lost in this modern day and age, such as going to church, or sitting down together and sharing a meal. Why is this happening? Simple, parents of today are forced into having both parents work because it is no longer a one-paycheck life style. Mother's once were able to stay at home and tend to the family...
Jonathon Kozol writes, "Public schools in the U.S. do not exist to educate an ethical human being…Schools do exist to educate defeated, unprovocative, well-balanced human beings…". This statement is certainly true, but should public schools be required to teach students ethics and morality? I would argue that an education devoid of ethics and morals is detrimental to our society. Scholar Joao Coutinho writes in the Harvard Educational Review, "Education is either for domestication or for freedom…There is no neutral education."
According to Kozol, "the first act of an ethical child... might well be to start the demolition of a manifestly anti-ethical structure like a public school," and "no institution goes about the conscious task of subsidizing it's own demolition." If public schools are inherently unethical, why would we want them teaching America's children ethics? The answer, of course, is that we would not want them to. If, for arguments sake, the schools were ethical, then teaching ethics to children would not result in "it's own demolition," just a change in how it teaches. Obviously, though, to change the way the public schools teach, the people in power, who currently run the schools, must be removed. They are the ones who will not "subsidize" their own demolition. One of the problems with America's public school system, as well as democracy, is human nature. Once someone is in a position of power, they generally do not want to leave, even if their act of staying is detrimental to the organization they are involved in.
A public school system was established to give an education. It was designed to make good people, to make good citizens, and to make each person his or her personal best. Is that really what is happening at pubic school places though? When a child has to concentrate on so many other things such as sports, social status, dances, games, it is hard to stay focused on the main goal, which is to get an education. A child can obtain an education without having to go a mandated building that claim to educate children but in reality are shaping children to all be synced with one another and keep each child from forming their own thoughts and minimizing their ability to be critical thinkers.
Today I will be interviewing Baumeister, Gilligan, and Piaget who are some of the most influential psychologists in the field of moral development. I will be interviewing these three so and I have three critical questions in the field of moral development that I would like each to answer. I will then conclude with a brief summary of the similarities and differences between the psychologists I have interviewed.
Proper socialization as an infant has long lasting effects on an individual well into adulthood. Sociality in the form of bonding with one’s mother, friendships or just mental stimulation from sound and touch can help form a person’s personality and determine their moral attitude. Morality correlates to empathy because empathy gives someone the ability to relate to how another is feeling, which in turn could help someone determine what is considered right and wrong. Empathy is associated with being responsible for someone’s ability to make socially acceptable decisions and exhibit moral behavior. When someone is lacking empathy or has been socially stunted such as the case of the Romanian orphans, it is believed that they are more capable of doing immoral things such as stealing, lying and cheating. Ethics and Morals are two important words everyone knows, but which very few truly understand. Ethics is defined, in Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary, as the discipline dealing with what is good and what is bad. Morals are defined, in the same dictionary, as those principles of right and wrong in behavior. For Kozol in The Night Is Dark and I Am Far From Home, ethics and morals have similar definitions but extend to include a sense of compassion for others. I agree with his argument that the purpose of schooling is to educate an ethical human being: a person who not only lives his life by facts and knowledge but also by ethics and morals.
Here in “Against School” by John Taylor Gatto, has a large chunk of it that talks about the public school system in the U.S and its history and purpose. I agree with Gatto, partly. Teachers and educators severely need a new school system, and it does indeed need it. The big question is why we still haven’t done anything to try and change the school system into something different and better? After going through the public school system for about 15 years, should people feel as if they just went to school then switch to a remaining life of working like drones of another system? The system that we have today has taken over the sense of creativity and replaced it with one that believes in the opposite. Creativity and individualism, this is the reverse of the school system we have today according to Gatto. Compared to when the public school system first started, here in the present our society doesn’t have the same requirements and needs of what we used to need. What we do need in our society right now for our school system is individualism and creativity.
I am a school bus driver, so I work in the public school system. With that we are really not in a profit making atmosphere but we do have to deal with ethical dilemmas on a regular basis. One of the biggest ethical dilemmas that we have to deal with in the public school system is posting on facebook or social media sites. Although our school system yet has not made us sign any paperwork , I know from personal experience, It can affect you. We had a snow day and I made a post about I personally thought we should have been on a 2 hour delay. I did not mention the school system or name any names and I got called into the superintendent's office. I am not even friends with hi or anyone else that I work with. I understand his dilemma where, if I as a school bus driver am questioning his decision, how does it look to the parents.
Latchkey kids are children who return from school to an empty home because their parent or parents are away at work, or a child who is left home with little parental supervision. Over ½ of children in the United States are latchkey kids due to single parents or parental divorce. Leaving kids at home alone can be very dangerous and in some cases leads to children being separated from their parents by childcare, so being a latchkey child has many effects. Some of the negative effects of being latchkey kids are peer pressure from other children or adults, injuries from trying to be independent or from being harmed, and loneliness. The amount of effects latchkey kids face can be minimized by community involvement,
The Power of education is overwhelming. It develops and enhances the minds of young children into young adults. Education serves as a tool for society to raise its youth to serve society. This process has been a never ending cycle since as long as anyone can remember. Children maturing into proper adults has been the goal of education in the past. However, there is a major controversy over the effects and power of the educational system. Throughout the past the educational system has been the focus over the development of society's youth. All parents, teachers, and concerned individuals ponder the notion of the role and effects of the system in question. Is the purpose of our educational system to teach just the cold hard facts and information, or should it exist to also serve to supply our juveniles with ethics and morals? One such person who confronts today's system is an author, Jonathan Kozol. His thoughts over this concerned area have brought him to write a book entitled, The Night is Dark and I am Far From Home. In his writing he argues that Public schools in the U.S. do not exist to educate an ethical being, but rather educate unprovocative, conforming American citizens. (133) I agree. The function of our educational system should be in existence to serve our growing children with not only the knowledge of information, but the wisdom of morality as well.

Teachers are often put in situations that require more than just knowing the basic school rules. It is within these situations, that the ethical dilemmas occur. There is not always a right way to deal with the many daily problems that face educators, but there are ways to handle situations that are better than others.
