Statement of Philosophies of Teaching and Learning
Teaching is about preparing an individual to survive in the world around them. In an educational institution, not only are you relaying information of a certain content area to a student as a teacher, but also you are showing this individual how to learn, listen, cooperate, and be responsible. Concepts that are foreign and unknown must be made familiar, from the ancient civilizations to working in groups with people unlike you. Preparing students with this kind of knowledge allows them to successfully undertake the demands of higher education or any career. Cooperation is especially essential to our ever-changing world where national and cultural boundaries are being crossed every day. Understanding the world around them will give students an incredible tool for being effective communicators and respectful individuals throughout their life.
Teaching, especially at the secondary level, is also about helping students learn how to think for themselves. By taking on responsibilities of learning material given by a teacher, the students reach a level of maturity that allows them to take the next step into logical reasoning. Inquiring into subject matter and delving into the details beyond the standard facts help students exercise their mind and be prepared for their lives as adults. When Gerald Ford grew up, he went to the University of Michigan and started playing football there. As soon as he started playing football, he became a star at it. He was one of the best football players at the college. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1935 and then went to Yale University in 1941. When Ford was in Yale, he earned a law degree and was known as a star gridiron – football player. During World War II, Ford joined the navy and served in the South Pacific. Then later in 1948, Ford met Betty Elizabeth Ann Bloomer Warren. This was the woman that Ford got married to. She later became known as; “Betty Ford” (britannica.org pg. 1). They had four children. Their names were Michael, John, Steven, and Susan.

("Osteosarcoma" Teens Living with Cancer.) If this cancer spreads, it is customarily to the lungs of the patient. X-rays are generally the first diagnostic test. Biopsies are performed to make the final and certain diagnosis. This disease’s treatments include chemotherapy, and surgery, ordinarily together. Radiation, though uncommon, can be used as a treatment for osteosarcoma. After treatments, it is recommended the patient receives follow up care to monitor the cancer in case it returns or any side effects are present.
Considered by Aristotle as the perfect example of tragedy, Sophocles’ Oedipus the King is an Athenian play that follows the undoing of a Theban king by the name of Oedipus. The play presents a question Oedipus himself cannot answer: is it the man’s actions or is it the gods’ decisions that control the man’s destiny? Perhaps the answer is both man and god, but it is the man’s imperfections that determine what fate the gods will give him. While there is no direct proof that gods control everything in a man, from his dreams to his choices, Oedipus still proves that no matter how renowned a man is, that man’s weaknesses will determine his success or his failure. I believe that someone who exemplifies the same type of courage as Gerald R. Ford is another president, John Q. Adams, following my own definition that courage means remaining strong in the face of adversity and opposition. During Adams’ presidency, as a reaction to the defeat of Jackson in the House of Representatives and Adams’ “corrupt bargain” with Henry Clay, he faced opposition on every single issue he put through Congress and passed almost no significant policy measures while he was president. However, he continued his political career past the presidency, unlike any other president and served in the House of Representatives, which is what I believe demonstrates his courage. When Henry Ford was young, he was born on his family’s farm in Wayne County, near Dearborn, Michigan. When he was twelve, his mother died during childbirth. Then for the rest of his life, he tried to live his life as he believed his mother would have wanted. Although close to his mother, Henry had a strained relationship with his father. An estimated 30,000 people are killed each year by guns in the United States alone according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Gun Control, Funk & Wagnall’s). Though there have been some restrictions and laws placed, both the conservative and liberal sides are not pleased with either the lack of action or the fact that there has been too much action that has taken place. “About 38% of U.S. households and 26% of individuals owned at least one gun, with about half of the individuals having 4 or more guns, according to a 2004 survey by the Harvard School of Public Health (Gun Control, Funk & Wagnall’s).” Both sides turn to the one document centered on the argument for evidence to support their side: the Second Amendment.
Teachers help us expand and open our mind by giving us skills throughout students’ early life to help students when they are older. By learning information from teachers, students become better people, in a couple of ways. Besides inquiring knowledge from their teachers, students learn to work with one another, open their mind to other peoples’ thoughts and ideas, respect one another, and learn different techniques for life’s issues.
Education gives me the knowledge that I require to overcome any problem every day. Furthermore, it is more value when teachers and students are free to express their own point of view without doubts. Freire states, “Liberating education consists in acts of cognition, not transferrals of information. It is a learning situation in which the cognizable object (far from being the end of the cognitive act) intermediates the cognitive actors- teachers on the one hand and students on the other” (249). Fraire point is that the teacher and student learn each other when both communicate their ideas. Education is richer when both parts speak and argue over a topic than when only teachers talk and give their opinion about it . It is important for me to hear the point of view of everyone in the classroom because this is the way I build my own opinion. I do not always agree with everyone, but I respect the opinion of all. Tragedies have been written, told, and acted out for a number of years. Aristotle defined in his book, Poetics that a tragedy is to arouse the emotions of pity, fear, and finally a catharsis, or purging of emotions. A tragic play that perfectly completes this cycle of emotions is Oedipus the King by Sophocles. This play follows a king of the town of Thebes through his journey of the emotions of pity, fear, and finally a catharsis. It is a tale of a man who unknowingly kills his father and fathers the children of his mother as well. The audience is pulled into the play and experiences the plot along with Oedipus.
It is a constant truth that technology is growing rapidly and it is opening up many opportunities for students as well as teachers. Through the use of the internet information that would take scholars months to acquire out and interpret can be found in less than a minute though a Google search and not only is the information their, but in many cases the information that you wanted is shown in bolded so it can even be found quicker.
Students come to school from different cultural backgrounds and with different learning styles. In order to cater to the students teachers have to work hard to try and meet the needs of all their students to promote free, equal access to quality education. Therefore knowledge, skill, beliefs and attitudes are important for understanding and improving educational
Education is an ever-changing part of society. A classroom teacher is faced with new challenges and obstacles that have never been dealt with before. Students come to the classroom with different life stories. Every student has strengths and weaknesses that surface in the classroom environment. Teachers must understand and focus on utilizing each student's strengths and work to improve weaknesses. Students learn in a variety of ways. The classroom must be a safe zone that appreciates student's viewpoints and allows room for mistakes. When topics in the classroom are related to "real-life" experiences, the information is more likely to be retained. Students learn from one another. The ideas and perspectives that each student brings to the classroom can bring insight into what is being learned. Students have to be allowed to explore new ideas, try them to see if they work, and sometimes fail. When students are encouraged to explore, they begin the process of becoming lifelong learners.
Oedipus the King by Sophocles has the ingredients necessary for a good Aristotelian tragedy. The play has the essential parts that form the plot, consisting of the peripeteia, anagnorisis and a catastrophe; which are all necessary for a good tragedy according to the Aristotelian notion. Oedipus is the perfect tragic protagonist, for his happiness changes to misery due to hamartia (an error). Oedipus also evokes both pity and fear in its audience, causing the audience to experience catharsis or a purging of emotion, which is the true test for any tragedy according to Aristotle.
My personal philosophy on teaching is to inspire my students to think and to be objective thinkers. Like life, classrooms are filled with incidents on a daily basis. It 's interesting, as an active participant, to actually experience these moments shared between teachers and students as relationships are built mostly based on personality. As professionals, it 's expected that emotions take the back seat in decision making, but humans think with their heart a lot. A teacher in my estimation is one of the most human
