The Postal Service released three hits; The District Sleeps Alone Tonight, Such Great Heights, and Clark Gable. These songs all share a common theme; teenage self-loathing love songs. I will be analyzing these three songs and the common themes between them.
The District Sleeps Alone Tonight is about the singer gaining an understanding of why he is not with the one he loves. He sings “I’ll wear my badge…a vinyl sticker with big block letters adherent to my chest that tells your new friends I am a visitor here.” This is expressing that to her it always seemed it was never going to last. It means he was always there only when he wanted to be, and would never stay for long. In this song, he realizes why he was left and why he is so alone.
Such Great Heights is someone knowing he or she was meant to be with another person. You think you are perfect for each other and you fit together like a puzzle. In reality, he is realizing he is the only one who still feels that way, and the one he loves, does not. He wants her to be guided home by his music, by fate, and by love. “The windows down when this is guiding you home” expresses his wishes. He wants her to take a long drive to him and to stay with him, forever.
Clark Gable is about him wishing their love could be like a movie. In the song he pretends to be in a movie with her, acting as though they are still in love. He sings “I want so badly to believe that there is truth, that love is real” and in this ...
When asked about John Steinbeck’s career, people often refer to Steinbeck as a playwright, journalist, and a well-known novelist. The book Of Mice and Men is a popular novel by John Steinbeck and a required read for most high school students. Most of Steinbeck 's novels have a central theme focusing on the relationship between man and his environment. The American dream for George and Lennie, two of the main characters in Of Mice and Men, is to have a place of their own, to be respected, and to work hard for everything they earn and deserve. In Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, the land and a hope of a better life becomes the talisman of an American dream for Lennie and George that is left unfulfilled.
There are many important and interesting themes present in Joyce Carol Oates’ “Where are You Going, Where Have You Been?” One major overlying theme is that of the apathy of adults towards the youth in society. Apathy, or general disinterest, can be innocuous, but it can also be incredibly harmful. Unfortunately, in “Where are You Going, Where Have You Been?” it falls into the latter category, likely leading to the demise of the protagonist. Oates makes it fairly clear throughout the story that the adults present in Connie’s life are responsible, at least in part, for what happens to her. This is shown with several different methods, which will be discussed in this paper.
Darcy’s proposals help to manifest his personal growth by showing the difference in his manner, rationale, and result. His haughty words and actions are the crux of his indifference towards the feelings of others in the beginning of the novel. Although Mr. Darcy is ignorant of his own highfalutin attitude at first, the rejection of his proposal by Elizabeth is just the tocsin he needs to salvage the small amount of respect she still had for him. Through her rejection, he comes to terms with his own pride and prejudice against Elizabeth and her family. Also, he realizes that she is not one to marry for money or social status, but she wants to marry a man that she truly loves, which is a surprise to him. This radical modification of his attitude results in a second marriage proposal for Elizabeth, where he genuinely expresses his feelings. Although he is uncertain of her answer, he simply wants to make his love for her known. The slightly astonished Elizabeth immediately recognizes how much the tone and motive in his second proposal have changed from his first and also reveals her love for him. Mr. Darcy’s two proposals do not simply act as means to communicating his feeling to Elizabeth, but as a documentation of his significant change in
Capitalism is invariably acknowledged in the study of social science. Amongst the respective gathered ideals of the esteemed sociologists: Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, and Max Weber include through discussion as to the origins of Capitalism, as well as the role and effects it plays upon civilized societies. Whereas Marx and Engels view of Capitalism fall within similar boundaries, Weber's opinion of the matter differs in regard to the formers in several ways. In similarity, both parties agree that history [or sets of historical change(s)] lead to the establishment of Capitalism within social groups of human beings. However it is in their assessment of the sources of impact on history, which begins the disparity between the two parties conceptualization of the origins of Capitalism.
Karl Marx (1818 - 1883) and Max Weber (1864 - 1920) both recognised that economic categories played a large part in social class structure. Nineteenth Century history plays an important part in understanding how class influenced identities. The Industrial revolution was changing the structure of the communities, the rich or landowners having a far better standard of living with better education, health care, property ownership and power than the poor. The working class would have a daily struggle to survive. The change in Trade Unions meant that the working class had a voice, helping to push their needs forward, looking for better standards of living and working conditions. Marx's concept of class was based around the production of goods. The emerging owners of these goods, or capital, were known as the ruling class. Marxism would define only two classes, the ruling class and the working class. The influence on identity of these two class structures would be very relevant in those days. The working class would earn a wage from the production of the goods but the ruling class would sell these for a profit and exploit the workers. The two classes were on two different levels of wealth, property ownership and social standing and they would struggle to mix, they were dependent on each other but the rewards would be unevenly matched.
Lonely” is a poem about a kid having trouble living his life and he isolates himself from other people which makes his life harder. In this poem the author uses symbolism, a metaphor, and rhetorical questions to show how being isolated can make life more difficult. The author tells the audience that whenever anyone tries to isolates themselves there life gets harder for them.
Pieter and I were determined to become proficient water skiers, while Rhea had knee issues that limited her participation. The Gibson Girl only had a forty horsepower motor, which wasn’t sufficient power for faster skiing or for doing tricks like skiing barefoot. I remember using the Comfort for some of our skiing before Dad traded the outboard for a sixteen-foot Gar Wood Junior, which had an inboard motor and more power. Pieter and I spent hours practicing the basics of getting up efficiently, skiing across the wake and then jumping the wake. It wasn’t long before we developed a passion for mastering slalom skiing. I wanted to ski all the time during that period.
Joseph Conrad is one of the most recognized writers of literary impressionism, who once wrote that the main reason of a writer was “to make you see” (Domestico). Under the name of Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, Joseph was born on the third day of December 1857 in the Russian-controlled city of Berdychiv, Ukraine. However, he was orphaned at the age of eleven when his father was prisoned by the Russians for his nationalist political activities in 1861. Conrad along with his mother followed him to Vologda where he was kept, but the harsh weather caused his mother to die form tuberculosis in 1865. Later on in 1869, his father died from tuberculosis as well (Higgins 2006). In 1874, Conrad traveled to Marseilles, where he worked on numerous French vessels over the next four years. In 1878, Conrad had attempted suicide, but failed and later joined a British ship in April 1878. It was on that vessel where Conrad was brought to Constantinople, and for the first time, London. Consequently, Conrad would serve in the British merchant navy for the next 16 years. At 21, Conrad started learning how to speak English, even though he had been reading the language since he was young. In 1895, Conrad married Jessie George, and later had two sons with her. He continued living in the southeast corner of England, where his life as a writer was encompassed by sickness, and being almost poor. He died from a heart attack on August 3, 1924 in Canterbury, Kent.
In the song “Blue Skies”, written by Irving Berlin, you are able to get a feel for what life was like in the 1920s. The song gave good vibes and made everything seem perfect and great because in the 1920s, life was good. In one of the verses, when he wrote about how everyday was a cloudy day he was referencing to the recently fought World War I. “Blue Skies” was written in order to display the joy and happiness that was circulating the nation during the 1920s right after the first World War. The meaning behind the title “Blue Skies” is that the skies always seemed bluer because everything in the country was going great during the 1920s. Also, the song “Blue Skies” was written with the intent to have an
Cause Jack left Diane 30 years ago. The world is spinning too fast for you and me. So whatever happened to the American Dream?”. It’s saying that the song isn’t the same anymore because it now a fantasy that’s harder to achieve. Too much has happened and they expected much more in the present and there isn’t enough time now. Jack and Diane are examples that show us that divorce rates are rapidly growing. In the last two lines, it basically states that there are so many challenges you are going to have to face and you will have to defeat them in time.
Music plays a major role in the novel of The Hobbit there are three parts in the story where there is a singing scene. (form chapter 1 to 4) The first part with the dwarves, the second part with the Elves and the third part with the goblins. And in each song there is a different tone, content, and structure.
Darcy, the illusion that Mr. Wickham had built surrounding himself was now shattered: “How different did everything appear in which he was concerned.” Elizabeth now realizes her mistakes, which her prejudice was built and hopefully will never fall for such deceit again. Mr. Darcy is not the only one who is haughty, Elizabeth’s pride takes a massive blow after reading the letter, “she grew absolutely ashamed.” Realizing her mistakes will make Elizabeth grow as a person as she realizes how despicable she was, and has learned from her mistakes. Elizabeth had always thought she had the perfect judgement, but in fact she was horribly blind: “Till this moment I never knew myself.” Elizabeth now sees that she has flaws and it got in the way of her judgement rendering it blind. It is in maturity that people see their flaws; now Elizabeth has to make sure the same mistakes does not happen again. It was only after her prejudice of Mr. Darcy was finally gone that Elizabeth realized her true feelings towards him: “She explained what it’s [the letter] effect on her had been, and how gradually all her former prejudice has been removed.” After reading the letter, Elizabeth was able to realize her flaws as a character and grow into maturity and because of that she was able to see her true feelings about Mr.
Letters play a very important role in ‘Pride and Prejudice’. They can tie the story together because letters provide information which we would not have found out from the dialogue between the characters. We can also find out extra background information which can help with the reader’s understanding of characters, the plot and the novel in general. Letters can reveal character’s personalities and how they feel about the other characters in the novel, for example Miss Bingley’s feelings about Jane. Letters are used as a dramatic device in ‘Pride and Prejudice’ to further the plot, link the story and to inform the readers of the character’s personalities.
In the Communist Manifesto it is very clear that Marx is concerned with the organization of society. He sees that the majority individuals in society, the proletariat, live in sub-standard living conditions while the minority of society, the bourgeoisie, have all that life has to offer. However, his most acute observation was that the bourgeoisie control the means of production that separate the two classes (Marx #11 p. 250).
