Let Gays Marry and Leave Marriage Alone
The article, "Let Gays Marry," written by Andrew Sullivan, is about equal rights on marriage for same sex couples. The second article, "Leave Marriage Alone," written by William Bennett, is about the institute of marriage and the meaning of marriage. Let people who love each other and want to be together for the rest of their lives, no matter sexuality tendencies, be together and live like other people in love. Both of these authors have different views of what the definition of marriage should be.
Sullivan's article argues, "Gay men and lesbians are citizens, entitled, like everyone else, to equal protection-no special rights, but simple equality" (p. 25). He writes that gay men and women want to marry for the same reason that straight people want to marry, for love. Sullivan writes, "And we (gay men and women) want to commit to that person in front of our family and country for the rest of our lives" (p. 25). He goes on to write that letting gays marry would not change the rights of others, ?Throughout American history, marriage has been between a man and a woman, and in many ways our society is built upon that institution. But none of that need change in the slightest? (p. 25). The definition of marriage has changed so much in the past years that it should change to include same sex marriages. Sullivan writes, "We changed (the definition of marriage) because we recognized that human dignity is the same whether you are a man or a woman, black or white. And no one has any more of a choice to be gay than to be black or white or male or female" (p. 26). The point has been brought up that marriage is between a man and a woman for procreation but there are men and women who...

Sullivan and Bennett both had great positions for their arguments about same-sex marriage and either article can easily persuade the reader. After I read both articles I questioned why we are arguing over something that is a personal issue between the two people in love, when there are ways that they can get married if they want to. I do not see why this bothers people, when we all have a right to do and be whatever we want to be in America. If it bothers people than they do not need to watch it, they can turn away. There are worse things out there than the legalization of same-sex marriage, why not argue about them. Let people who love each other and want to be together for the rest of their lives, no matter sexuality tendencies, be together and live like other people in love.
... to agree on the fact that the issue at hand is one of religion. Religion seems to be the deciding factor right now when it comes to the question of what is right and what is wrong. Both authors see religion as the main concern when the question of homosexual marriage is brought up. So as each has very different ideals for society as a whole, both Bennett and Sullivan try to represent the happiness of the people as a whole, in their own ways. The two authors present very different points of view and each has well thought out reasoning behind what he has to say. Although the authors feel very different about how marriage should exist and how it should be regulated, there is some common ground between the authors.
There is no question that he made an impact on normal people’s lives, as well as NASA itself. He created a path to future moon landings and further exploration of space. His legacy will live on through time. He spoke the words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” as he walked on the moon. People will never forget those words as they echo throughout time and
"Let Gays Marry" is an article written by Andrew Sullivan arguing that homosexuals should be given the right to be legally married in the United States. In this essay, Sullivan argues that homosexuals have just as much right to marry as heterosexual couples. Sullivan argues that throughout US history that the definition of marriage has been altered several times to accommodate changing times, and that it is time to recognize gay's right to marry. Throughout the article, Sullivan uses several sources to back up his argument, but also makes several comments to weaken his argument.
What is marriage? For thousands years, marriage has been a combination between a man and a woman. When they love each other, they decide to live together. That is marriage. But what will love happen between two same sex persons? Will they marry? Is their marriage acceptable? It is the argument between two authors: William J. Bennett and Andrew Sullivan. The two authors come from different countries and have different opinion about same sex marriage. Sullivan agrees with the gay marriage because of human right, on the other hand, Bennett contradicts his idea because he believes that marriage should be between a man and a woman. Even though their theories are totally different, their opinions are very well established.
In Andrew Sullivan 's "For Gay Marriage" (29-33) and William J. Bennett 's "Against Gay Marriage" (33-36), both authors address the issue of legalizing gay marriage, and more specifically the implications it would have on various aspects of society. Sullivan 's article focuses on how the legalization of gay marriage would not drastically change society as it is now, only provide validation and equality in all aspects of life. Bennett 's article focuses on the same specifics of society, such as fidelity and the definition of marriage, as his is written as a rebuttal to Sullivan 's, explaining how legalizing gay marriage would greatly impact society for the worse. Each author 's argument is influenced by either the inclusion or omission of the
Gay marriage is a hotly debated issue in today's society. Andrew Sullivan and William Bennett offer opposing views in the June 3, 1996 edition of Newsweek. Sullivan's article, “Let Gays Marry,” offers several arguments supporting the issues of same sex marriage. Bennett counters in his article, “Leave Marriage Alone,” that same sex marriages would be damaging to the sanctity of marriage. Each author presents several reasons for the positions they defend and bring up valid points to defend their opinions. William Bennett and Andrew Sullivan share a mutual respect for the values and sacredness of the bond of marriage. Their disagreements stem from who they believe should be allowed to marry.

Beginning with the topic on gay marriage and the controversial battle between authors, Andrew Sullivan and William Bennett, Sullivan is the gay supporter. In Sullivan’s piece, “Let Gays Marry,” he opens with a statement by the Supreme Court, “A state cannot deem a class of persons a stranger to its laws.” He feels that this simple sentence has so much meaning, saying that whatever type of person, male or female, black or white, everyone deserves the same legal protection and equal rights. Therefore, gay marriage should not be excluded from the legal system. He tells that some churches practice different beliefs and may oppose gay marriage but religion has nothing to do with the state appeals. Sullivan explains how the definition of marriage has changed in the past and that it can be done again. Sullivan ends his piece by saying that changing the law would not affect straight couples, so why are they against gay marriage? He believes the change would allow gay couples to experience what straight couples already have.
In Sullivan’s essay, he argues for accepting same-sex marriage. If the judge accepted homosexuals as citizens in the Supreme Court, homosexuals would feel liberated. People wonder why same-sex couples want to get married. The reasoning is the same as anyone who wants to get married to the person whom he or she loves. It is normal thought. It seems like it should be easy to accept these opinions. However, it is very difficult to accept because marriage traditionally has been between a man and a woman, and this has been the tradition for a long time. Therefore, some religions refuse to recognize homosexuality, but refuting it shouldn’t be seen as a problem because of the separation of the church and state. Same-sex couples want a social right to get married. Some people will argue as society has changed, the definition of marriage should evolve because human values are equal anyone in the world. Everyone should have access to the same rights. Is the purpose of marriage strictly to bring up children? No, there are many married couples who do not have chil...
Bennett’s essay is clear, concise and to the point. He talks about the key issues from the first sentence in the first paragraph. The structure of his essay is deductive, beginning with “the two key issues that divide proponents and opponents of same sex marriage. The first is weather legally recognizing same-sex unions would strengthen or weaken the instition. The second has to do with the basic understanding of mar...
There have been many great mathematicians in the world, though many are not well known. People have been studying math for ages, the oldest mathematical object dated all the way back to around 35,000 BC. There are still mathematicians today, studying math and figuring out ways to improve the mathematical world. Some of the most well-known mathematicians include Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and Aristotle. These mathematicians (and many more) have influenced the mathematical world and mathematics would not be where it is today without them. There were many great individuals who contributed greatly in mathematics but there was one family with eight great mathematicians who were very influential in mathematics. This was the Bernoulli family. The Bernoulli family contributed a lot to mathematics, medicine, physics, and other areas. Even though they were great mathematicians, there was also hatred and jealousy between many of them. These men did not want their brothers or sons outdoing them in mathematics. Most Bernoulli fathers told their sons not to study mathematics even if they wanted. They were told to study medicine, business, or law, instead, though most of them found a way to study mathematics. The mathematicians in this family include Jacob, Johann, Daniel, Nicolaus I, Nicolaus II, Johann II, Johann III, and Jacob II Bernoulli.
Carl Friedrich Gauss is revered as a very important man in the world of mathematicians. The discoveries he completed while he was alive contributed to many areas of mathematics like geometry, statistics, number theory, statistics, and more. Gauss was an extremely brilliant mathematician and that is precisely why he is remembered all through today. Although Gauss left many contributions in each of the aforementioned fields, two of his discoveries in the fields of mathematics and astronomy seem to have had the most tremendous effect on modern day mathematics.
...st important scientists in history. It is said that they both shaped the sciences and mathematics that we use and study today. Euclid’s postulates and Archimedes’ calculus are both important fundamentals and tools in mathematics, while discoveries, such Archimedes’ method of using water to measure the volume of an irregularly shaped object, helped shaped all of today’s physics and scientific principles. It is for these reasons that they are remembered for their contributions to the world of mathematics and sciences today, and will continue to be remembered for years to come.
Like many other organizations, executives at Starbucks realized the importance of planning. Planning involves making sound business decisions and goals for the company, specific divisions, a store, and for individuals (Bateman-Snell, 2004, p. 108). Starbucks’ executives have defined their business with the mission statement to “establish Starbucks as the premier purveyor of the finest coffee in the world while maintaining our uncompromising principles while we grow” (Starbucks mission statement). Executives have found various ways of increasing their market by examining alternative paths to conduct their business. Most recently they are marketing to the younger generation by allowing them to download music and drink coffee at the same time. Tactical, or operational, planning involves breaking the mission statement into more specific goals and creating plans that are related to lower levels of the company (Bateman-Snell, 2004, p. 112). These plans are most often thought of by middle management and are developed into goals for sales, marketing, advertising, human resources, accounting, and financing. These goals will reinforce the company’s predetermined goal and help Starbucks achieve their desired success.
d. Employee selection and training are also elements of the strategy. Starbucks employed diverse people which reflected the community. Starbucks trained each employee to perform to their best capabilities.
