Critical Evaluation of a Magazine Advertisement
“Living in an age of advertisement, we are perpetually disillusioned.” ~J.B. Priestley sums up the reality of our media today. We are constantly being influenced and affected by advertisements and how we react to them. Advertisements have a great effect on us and how we operate. Advertisements attempt to control what we should wear, how we should look, what we should eat, what we should do, how we should think, and how we should smell. This magazine advertisement is very convincing of what type of perfume we should wear. “Moschino Couture!” uses an attractive woman, simplistic layout and sample perfume to sell us the product we all yearn for.
The first thing people notice when they see this ad is the bottle of perfume. Purpose accomplished. Naturally, when looking at a person you usually first make eye contact, but in this particular ad, the models’ eyes are covered by her hair which forces our eyes downward toward the bottle. The bottle is positioned directly below the models face where we will look next. Also, important to notice is that the featured object, the perfume, is not placed in the middle. When the point of focus is off-center it causes our eye to move through out the picture thus absorbing the entire advertisement. The subtle changes and adjustments the advertisement designers make has a huge effect on how the potential customer views the product.
Not surprisingly, the model is attractive, skinny and flawless, exactly what we tend to idolize. As a result, the ad is telling us that if we want to be as pretty or as immaculate as this person, we must wear this perfume which relates to using pathos. The words on the bottle are very easy to read and on the left side it is lighter then those lines on the right side. Since we read from the left to the right we follow the lighter part of the bottle toward the words and in addition, the dark sides on the left prevent out eyes from wandering off the page.
This advertisement is appealing to woman interested in buying perfume. Even if the buyer is not interested in perfume this ad makes you think that you need this particular perfume. The ad is very convincing and very well displayed. The company producing this advertisement has successfully caused the viewer or consumer to think twice when they see this ad and want to buy the product. This is what makes for a good magazine advertisement.
Every year in the United States, an average more than 100,000 people are shot. In just the last three years, a total of 325,609 people have been killed from gun violence; if one were to think about it, that’s more fatalities than the population of Pittsburgh (307,484.) There have been shootings in schools/universities, shopping centers, and even a gym that have gone to show that no one is safe, no matter their surroundings. I have examined and analyzed the COVERGIRL™ NatureLuxe advertisement that uses common feminine stereotypes. In this advertisement, COVERGIRL™, which runs in Seventeen magazines, targets women through their choices of colors, fonts, and images used. Certain stereotypes are used; such as, those who are more feminine tend to prefer lighter, happier colors, such as pink. Also, the use of a celebrity, who many young women look to as an icon, assists in the advertisement of the COVERGIRL™ product. COVERGIRL™, more than likely, is able to successfully market their lip-gloss product in the United States by using common gender stereotypes to show femininity and how those, mainly women, should be presented in today’s society.
Have you ever wondered where the saying, ‘a picture says a thousand words’, come from? Well, I do not know who came up with this fantastic phrase, but nonetheless, I will be describing and analyzing two different magazine advertisements, trying to put in words what I think the advertisers wanted consumers to receive when those potential buyers viewed their ads. The two advertisements that I chose, Caress and Secret, try to encourage female consumers of all ages to purchase their hygiene products. Although both ads, Caress and Secret, appeal to the same gender with hygiene goods, they differ in design, text, and message. They attempt to please the female buyer with color, texture, and sexuality. This makes it prevalent, that the agents must grab the attention of possible buyers in order to sell their product. The advertisers must choose a variety of marketing strategies to the reach their targeted consumers.
I can imagine a story about young lovers meeting and falling in love while I saw the print ads photo. This perfume had a lot of love and emotions for a right date and chemistry which happens between her and the fragrance which is like her second skin, which follows her like a shadow and says a lot about her emotional state. The aesthetics and rhetorical appeal of the Lanvin ad are representing love with happiness because a man and woman look each other. This ad seems like Pathos because happiness is one word that can explain wedding a lot: happiness in emotion or feeling and happiness in celebration. The intended audience for this advertisement is women, and the mood in the ad is something we can relate with. So I think an advertisement in this style is very relevant in the moods of woman that they can feel attractive to buy all around the country and the world. Also, Lanvin advertisement contains attractive photos for the intended audience which is women. The image of the women in the ad is something we can relate with. It keeps the relationship with women closely to make them feel consider with no distinction. This ad illustrates Lanvin’s is a universal appeal to all women. As the generations of America’s youth continue to grow, so does the increase in violent crimes associated with each generation. Over the last decade, studies have shown that school shootings have increased by an astonishing 13%. Although this figure as a percentage does not seem like much, it makes one stop and think. Parents blame the video games and their violent behaviors for the influence on their children’s daily lives. Grandparents blame the child’s parents for not showing them the right way to grow up in the world. And then we have that child’s friends who say that this child just was not respected by their classmates, or perhaps even bullied into this violent nature. Regardless of the cause to this violent increase, many Americans do believe in a solution: gun control. Gun control is the situation in which the federal government would put a ban on owning firearms. Contrary to what many “hard-core” Americans believe, gun control would not necessarily ban them from owning hunting rifles or even personal handguns. It would simply limit the ownership of semi-automatic assault rifles, and other rifles of this nature. This does not contradict the Second Amendment of the Constitution which states that American citizens have the Right to Bear Arms. I believe in the constitutional Right to Bear Arms, and I am against any attempt to eradicate that right for any American citizen: however, I am for gun control in the sense of lowering the possession of semi-automatic and fully-automatic rifles.
During World War II, the Nazi regime, under the leadership of Adolf Hitler, attempted to eliminate all the Jews and other “inferior peoples” of Europe. The Nazis and their collaborators killed millions of people, including six million Jewish people and other minority groups, such as 200,000 gypsies and 200,000 disabled people ("Introduction to the Holocaust”). This terrible period in history is now referred to as the Holocaust ("Background to the Holocaust”). A young girl named Anne Frank wrote one of the most notable Jewish texts from this period. Her optimism about the future should inspire the resolution of the modern religious and racial conflicts which stem from WWII era prejudices.
We are not only responsible for patient care, but we are also included in many other roles. Before nursing school, I thought that the main responsibility of the nurse is to take care of patient. During nursing school, I learned that patient care was not the nurses known just for. We took many general courses and nursing course work to prepare ourselves to be an educated member. In clinical, my patient has a Foley catheter, I will know to plan and implement Foley care to help with personal hygiene and preventing infections. It is important to make decisions based on priorities, time, and resources. As nurses, we need to know how to delegate and ask for assistance when needed. In the story, “I Only Came to Use the Phone,” Maria is left alone in a sanatorium and reveals her weak and fragile mental state. This uncovers Maria's fatal flaw that will lead to her downfall. She becomes “crazy” because she never had much self-esteem. She has a problem settling down because she was married three times. This commitment issue greatly weakens her because of her many breakups. Finally, she marries a magician named Saturno who loves her more than anything. She changes when she is with Saturno. Maria quotes Vinicius de Moraes when asked by Saturno how long she will love him: “Love is eternal for as long as it lasts”(Marquez 80). When Maria becomes trapped in the mental asylum, she loses the steady presence of the man she loves. This breaks through her newly built self-esteem and leads to the demise of her mental health. When she is first in the sanatorium, Maria constantly asks, “Is there a telephone?”(Marquez 72). She is desperate to hold on to the life she had with him. Since the matrons of the sanatorium will not let her contact her husband, the bond that she has found with him is disconnected. She has only herself on whom to rely. The other inmates are completely insane and are useless to aid her in her escape. Maria is not strong enough to leave herself. The basic strategy of this kind of gender stereotypes is men will ignore the advertisements by paying more attention on woman if the advertiser includes woman’s image, and if they use male photograph in advertisement it will attract more female consumers. Therefore, people will pay more attention on advertisement and then have more possibility to shape positive attitude of that product, or at least, bear that product in mind when they need to consume it (Courtney and Whipple, 1983, p.74). Moreover, it is not only a strategy to attract more consumers, more importantly; it is a method to stand out in a “male-dominated work environment in advertising”, and it challenges the value of patriarchy and “double sex standards” (Fedorenko, 2015, p.476). However, sexy female image are often controversially critique as gender stereotypes of women in advertising. According to Laura Mulvey’s idea of “male gaze”, it points out that female are sexual objects to men to please them in an “erotic spectacle” (1992, cited in Marcellus, 2009). In Sonata’s ad, this woman dresses sexy in order to be a sexual reward, a tool to attract men and accessory of a successful man. This expression of women object to the idea of feminism that has mentioned before, women is independent, and the reason for being sexy and glamour is not to please men and fulfil male’s desire of sex. Gun violence in America is a public health crisis, which needs to be recognized and changed by legislatures, and the voting American. As conscious Americans, we need to vote for changes to gun laws that would improve background checks nation-wide, make firearm registration mandatory, restrict the sale of assault weapons and weapon modifications that give the shooter military-grade fire power, and invest in gun-safe technology and safe firearms storage designs. This type of technology will help prevent criminally oriented people from accessing guns, and will help prevent the accidental deaths of many children by guns. This essay will explain the reforms needed to help ensure Americans can still exercise their 2nd amendment right of owning firearms, and preventing the unnecessary deaths of many Americans at the same time.
Dove is a personal care trademark that has continually been linked with beauty and building up confidence and self-assurance amongst women. Now, it has taken steps further by impending with a new advertising strategy; fighting adverse advertising. And by that it means contesting all the ads that in some way proliferate the bodily insufficiencies which exits inside women. Launched by Dove, the campaign spins round an application called the Dove Ad Makeover which is part of the global Dove “Campaign for Real Beauty” what has been continuing ever since 2004 and times print, television, digital and outdoor advertising. As Leech (1996) believed,” commercial consumer advertising seems to be the most frequently used way of advertising.” In which way the seller’s chief goal is to sway their possible spectators and attempt and change their opinions, ideals and interests in the drive of resounding them that the produce they are posing has a touch that customer wants that will also be in their advantage, therefore generating false desires in the user’s mind. Dove is vexing to influence their viewers to purchase products they wouldn’t usually buy by “creating desires that previously did not exist.”(Dyer, 1982:6)

We hear on the news about all these tragic events, Aurora, Orlando, San Bernardino, Columbine, Sandy Hook. It doesn't matter where you find yourself, at the movie theater or at school, your life could always be threatened by a gun.. This ongoing war has caught the attention of thousands of people that have had their loved ones taken away so soon, or the ones that experienced an attempt on their life and were lucky enough to survive. This is why Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America was established on December 15 2012, the day after the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting happened (MDAGSA). Marc Jacob’s advertisement for the women’s fragrance, “Daisy” utilized a unique set of images to encode both explicit and implicit messages which function to create a visually appealing medium that is able to impact consumers on an emotional level. Through the first order of signification, the advertisement emphasizes lighting and bold, white text to effectively draw attention and accentuate their product and name. The source of luminescence seems to stem from the product itself as it illuminates surrounding areas such as the hair of the model and functions to contrast the duller surroundings. The text for the product and company name also display contrast with the light letters on a dark background and act as a simple yet sophisticated frame for the image while reinforcing what is said on the bottle. These techniques allow Marc Jacob to grant the product a divine, almost heavenly appearance and the model an angelic presence which implies a “bright” outcome with the use of the luxurious fragrance. In addition, the light from the product seems like the ideal way forth, a mystical beacon in the muddled, dull surrounding thus giving the product an air of importance. Secondly, from a denotative standpoint, the advertisement is set in a field of flowers and maintains a coherent yellow and green colour scheme throughout. The colours used reflect a very naturalistic setting that is cheerful and serene. Observers can make the connection between the livid, open field to the natural, floral fragrance. Furthermore, the title flower acts as a key sign in the advertisement and is connotative of beauty, youthfulness and innocence. Safety, guidance, and nurture are the main appeals the “moms demand action” advertising uses to persuade U.S citizens to take action on gun control. Weather you are in urban Chicago, suburban Virginia, or rural Texas, no matter where in the world you are gun control is a topic that remains identical. Coming from a mother's perspective I understand where they are coming from because growing up my mom always taught us what was right from wrong. Nowhere in those life lesson was there the use of guns as a form of protection or simply as an
