An Annotation of Edgar Allan Poe’s The City in the Sea
Edgar Allan Poe had his own unique view on what poetry should be. A lecture he wrote, “The Poetic Principle,” covers his viewpoints and sheds light on many of his poems. We will use it to examine “The City in the Sea.” First, Poe felt that the goal of all poetry should be Beauty. What is poetry? It is not the mere “oral or written repetition of forms, and sounds and colors and odors, and sentiments.” No, whoever just repeats his experiences to the world in the form of song or written verse, no matter how enthusiastically he is doing it, is not attaining beauty. Even if he describes the most beautiful thing, or sings about it, this is not poetry. Poe believes that there is still something the would-be poet has not yet attained, and that is beauty. The would-be poet is only describing the beauty before us, and nothing else. He is only describing the beauty on Earth. In “The Poetic Principle” Poe states “an immortal instinct deep within the spirit of man is thus plainly a sense of the Beautiful.” The would-be poet is not satisfying that sense of poetry that Poe says we contain in our immortal spirit. Poe believes that this thirst for Beauty comes from the “immortality of Man.” This part of man, the immortal part is what brings this craving for Beauty that is not evident in this world, but only found in the eternal world of immortality, heaven. Poe states in “The Poetic Principle” that this thirst we have is “no mere appreciation of the Beauty before us, but a wild effort to reach the beauty above.” This is the reason why the would-be poet who sings of beauty on Earth is not successful, he is not appealing to the immortal part of man, he needs to reach towards...

...an origin. Poe states that hell is rising up, almost to meet the city, shall do the city reverence. What does it mean that Hell will do the city reverence? It means that Hell is just as beautifully adorned as this city is, with its thousand thrones, and thousand kings, and thousand kingdoms.
It is clear that according to Poe, this poem is all about death and Beauty, and most of all, exciting the soul. There seems to be an action about this poem that does indeed set the heart to racing. With his repetition in the word melancholy, and with describing the city as a ghastly city in lurid waters, he is trying to emphasize Beauty through the use of melancholy descriptions. He uses Death as the eternal being that is watching over the city, the being that we can perhaps glimpse through our reading of “The City in the Sea”, thus giving us a glimpse of the eternal.
...e better and make more sense for me because it describes from beginning to Jesus. I like the way Robert Krieg talked about Christianity, the story of God’s creation and the modern examples around our real life that makes more interesting and easier to read. Although my religion is not Christianity, it is good to learn the new thing and know what Christianity is. I believe every religion that wants people do the good things and have good moral and ethical to make a peace and safe world, only the doctrines and the gods are different. No matter what your religion is and what you believe, people should live in this life, to do the good things and make yourself happy. You do not know what happen after death, are there a heaven and a hell? The important thing is now, this life. You cannot control everything happened outside, but you certain can control your own action.
The first step to understand your role as a CNA is to know the difference between a hospital setting and a nursing center. Hospitals provide emergency care, surgeries, and laboratory testing. They care for people of all types of ages and all scenarios. Hospital patients have three types of illness: acute, chronic, or terminal. Acute illness is a sudden illness from which someone is likely to recover. Chronic illness is an on-going illness which there is no known cure. Terminal illness is an illness or injury from which a patient is expected to expire. On the other hand, long term care centers are designed to meet the needs of people who no longer can care for themselves but do not need hospital care. These people are called residents upon their entrance. Care centers provide residents with the right medical, nursing, rehabilitative, recreational, and social services. Nursing centers meet the needs of all kinds of residents from alert, oriented, confused, short term, life long, mentally ill, terminally ill, to persons needing complete care. Besides the differences hospitals and nursing centers have similar standards. They must protect and promote patients or residents rights. Both require high quality care, and a clean and safe setting. Edgar Allan Poe primarily authored stories dealing with Gothic literature; the stories were often quite dreary. Poe possessed a very sorrowful view of the world and he expressed this throughout his literary works. His goal was to leave an impression with every detail that he included in his stories. Although Poe’s stories seem very wretched and lackluster they all convey a certain idea. A trademark of Poe’s is his use of very long complex sentences. For instance, in his work The Fall of the House of Usher, Poe tried to ensure that every detail was as relevant as possible by integrating a wide variety of emotion. In the third paragraph, of page two hundred ninety-seven, Poe wrote, “Feeble gleams of encrimsoned light made their way through the trellised panes, and served to render sufficiently distinct the more prominent objects around…” This sentence illustrates the descriptiveness and complexity that Edgar Allan Poe’s works consisted of. The tormented cognizance of Poe led him to use a very gloomy diction throughout his writing. Edgar Allan Poe’s use of symbols and the way he conveyed his writing expr...
The City in the Sea tells of a great city, with “…shrines and palaces and towers… [which] …resemble nothing that is ours” (6-8). This may be a representation of metropolises at the time, for instance Philadelphia or New York City, or more likely Baltimore, where he lived at the time the poem was originally published, 1831. The description given of the city, with “…the good and the bad and the worst and the best”(4) and “Up domesup spiresup kingly halls”(17) along with multiple descriptions of a dismal atmosphere and the sea, are reminiscent of present day Manhattan Island, or Seattle. A tale of doom warns of “Hell, rising from a thousand thrones/ Shall do it reverence.(52-53) for the city. This is how many people today feel about New York City, Los Angeles, and other megalopolises. This could be a warning to the nineteenth century cities.
“Behind every great nurse there is a running CNA.” This statement is true, however only in the long-term care setting of nursing homes. Certified Nursing Assistants/Aides can be found in different settings, as well. Such as, hospice environments, and the homes of those seeking home healthcare. In each environment, CNA’s are important to the patients receiving their care.
Child abuse in America is an ongoing problem and something needs to be done. There are approximately one million children abused annually in the United States. (Table 339) Cases of child abuse and neglect are reported every ten seconds, and researchers believe that there’s three times that amount that goes unnoticed. (Child Abuse: Know the Signs and Stop the Violence Against Children.) Something needs to be done for these children who are too weak and too powerless to help themselves.
A Certified nursing assistant is one of the members of the health care team. It is also known as a CNA or Nursing Aide. They refer to the ones they care for as residents or patients. In the medical field, a CNA is the lowest paid, however they are the ones who do all of the work such as physical work. They come in contact with the residents more than anyone else; they are the prime care givers. They are always under the supervision of licensed practical, licensed vocational and registered nurses, known as LPN/LVN or RN. The residents/patients that they deal with need long term care, like nursing homes and caring for them at their home. Since they are long term, staying with a faculty up to several months and even years, many CNA’s create a bond and close relationship with them. The main thing they do for them is produce basic care for them or known to them as activates of daily living or ADL. Great paying CNA jobs are very easy to find, even though it requires little training and a variety of skills.
A Certified Nursing Assistant works under the supervision of nurses or other licensed medical professionals. A CNA is one of the lowest medical jobs you can have which means we take orders from the nurses instead of doctors. Being a CNA is hard work especially if you work in a nursing home. They are required to complete most of the dirty work
Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) are a vital element of the health team. Serving as a middleman between patients and other members of the health team nursing assistants play many different, yet equally important roles in patient care. Nursing assistants provide emotional, physical, and social support for patients, and residents. I will inform readers about the role of certified nursing assistants in long-term care centers (LTC) and their importance as a member of the health team.
Another writer, Dwayne Thorpe, suggests Poe had Christian doctrine in mind when he wrote the poem, contending that Poe's sources were biblical in nature (395). He continues: “identification of it [biblical source] casts some infernal illumination on his use of a Christian work to create a nihilistic vision” (395). This goes back to Claudel's biblical association, but Thorpe ascribes the city a darker, more sinister meaning. While many critics look at “The City in the Sea” through a Freudian or biblical lens, a deconstructive approach reveals the image of Death's inverted Necropolis.
The main characters in this book are Thomas Peaceful (Tommo), his brothers Big Joe Peaceful, and Charlie Peaceful, his childhood friend Molly, his great aunt (aka Grandma) Wolf and the owner of their property, The Colonel. All the characters are related to each other.
As mentioned earlier money laundering is the process of hiding profits from illegal criminal activities. The major goal of these criminal activities is to make as large of a profit as possible. The money laundering process is very important to these criminals because it allows them to enjoy their profits without revealing the source. When one of these activities generates large profits, the group involved must find a way to disguise the funds without attracting attention towards themselves. The way they accomplish this is by moving the funds to an indiscrete place where they are less likely to attract lots of attention. This allows the group to keep the source of the profits hidden so that it is always available to them. Money laundering is usually done in countries in which they have few or very weak laws ...
While metaphysical poetry consists of a specific style with expected patterns, different poets emphasize different aspects of as much, choosing to highlight the importance of the conceit, the intermingling of the spiritual and the physical, the need for meditation, and so on. For example, John Donne tends to worry himself with metaphysical conceits to the ends of the universe and back, overdeveloping extended metaphors to the point where the specific object that another is being compared to is referred to in every line. Poets such as George Herbert are more occupied with the meditative aspect of metaphysical poetry, choosing to utilize the style to contemplate a specific idea or comparison—in Herbert’s case, his poetry was read before speaking in front of his church, proving itself to be something he ruminated on in order to intensify his belief. In the case of these poets, both Donne and Herbert share a stark similarity as well considering they both participated in the mixing of the physical and the spiritual in their work. This shared quirk, as well as their own individual tendencies, can be seen in their
Stephen Hawking has been hailed as one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists since Albert Einstein. Hawking was born on January 8, 1942, which as he likes to point out is the 300th anniversary of Galileo's death. Hawking originally studied at Oxford University in England studying physics even though he would have preferred math. He moved onto Cambridge University to work on his PhD in cosmology. Hawking's career has focused upon the cosmic entities known as black holes, and has extended to specialized areas such as quantum gravity, particle physics, and supersymmetry.
In 1959, at 17 Hawking entered Oxford University. The college his father went to. This father had intended for him to study medicine but Hawkings was more focused on getting a degree in Mathematics. Unfortunately, Oxford University didn’t provide what he was looking for. So, he decided he would study natural science and phy...
