The Debate Over Birds and Feathered Dinosaurs

Because dinosaurs are animals that lived millions of years ago, we are entirely dependent on the fossils that they have left behind for any understanding that we hope to gain. As any paleontologist will tell you, fossil hunting is difficult. There are no certainties, no guarantees. A certain amount of luck is as valuable as any scientific knowledge.

Every so often a discovery is made that attempts to shake up pre-conceived notions of how the dinosaurs actually lived or how they came to be. On June 22, 2000, in Oregon, scientists announced the discovery of the oldest known animal to have feathers. Though no records indicate how the age of the animal was determined, the fossil was dated at 220 million years old. It lived at the time of the very earliest dinosaurs, and about 75 million years before the first known bird.1[1]

The scientists assert that Longisquama insignis is not a dinosaur, and may be one of the earliest bird ancestors. The animal was a small lizard-sized glider, with four legs and feathers on its body. It is believed that the feathers were used for gliding, as the ancient creature lacks the necessary structures for flying.1

Before the announcement of Longisquama, the earliest known animal with feathers was Archaeopteryx, a bird capable of flight that lived roughly 145 million years ago.1 It has been proposed that Archaeopteryx is the intermediary between birds and predatory theropods, such as Deinonychus.2 The discovery that Longisquama had feathers strongly questions the evolutionary origins of Archaeopteryx, and additionally may discredit the belief that it is the link between birds and dinosaurs.

However, th...

Essay on Dinosaurs are not Extinct - Dinosaurs are not extinct As time goes on, more and more fossil record of dinosaurs are richly known; more and more relative research project work on. An encouraging imagination that species of dinosaurs are not extinct and they evolve to birds was emerged. Dinosaurs are still here. They are still all around in the Human Age. It sounds crazy. Nevertheless, it seems clues are everywhere. There is a kind of dinosaurs, call Sauroposeidon, could raise its massive head over eighteen meters into the air, but this was only possible because their neck bones were so light, almost 85% hollow (name)....   [tags: birds, prehistoric ancestors, wishbones] 556 words

Essay about The Volcanoes that Killed the Dinosaurs - “...99.9 per cent of all [species] that have ever existed are now extinct.” (Benton 1) After one hundred and sixty million years of domination, the reign of the dinosaurs ended in fire and ice. Sixty five million years ago, the largest volcanoes in the history of the Earth erupted across what is now India, effectively annihilating the dinosaurs by spewing out noxious gas and ash, that effectively blocked out the sun killing off most vegetation and breaking the food chain, leaving the dinosaurs to starve....   [tags: eath history, dinosaurs ]

What Really Happened to the Dinosaurs? Essay examples - During the course of history, two theories have evolved that explain what happened to the dinosaurs.  These two theories have been debated back and forth between evolutionists and religious followers.  Evolutionists believe that dinosaurs became the most powerful beings on Earth around 235 million years ago.  They believe that no humans existed at the time.  Evolutionist views also say that all the dinosaurs were killed by a cataclysmic event.  On the other hand, the Bible says that God created the dinosaurs on the same day that he created Adam and Eve (Ham, 2007)....   [tags: Evolutionists, Biblical Views, Dinosaurs]

Essay about The Relation Between Birds and Dinosaurs - The Relation Between Birds and Dinosaurs One question that has stumped many paleontologists for centuries is, “Are birds dinosaurs?” Paleontologists have argued back and forth trying to prove or disprove each side of the theory. So far, advocates have supported their side through the facts of similar bone structures, bone organization, and the idea that dinosaurs had feathers. A common reaction that some people might have about the question is that there is no connection between the two species....   [tags: Paleontology Bones Essays Papers]

Essay on Microraptor: The Missing Link Between Birds and Dinosaurs - Microraptor: The Missing Link Between Birds and Dinosaurs In December of 2000, three Chinese scientists reported the discovery of the smallest adult dinosaur ever found, a species that claims to tighten the evolutionary gap between dinosaurs and birds. The dinosaur’s specie name is Microraptor, and it is slowly restoring the integrity of a sect of paleontology that was discredited in November of 1999 after National Geographic printed a story on the discovery of a species known as Archeoraptor....   [tags: Anthropology Essays Paleontology Papers]
