An Interpretation of Dudley Randall's To the Mercy Killers
In order to appreciate a poem properly, care must be taken to analyze and understand many different facets of the work. Poems are often very complex and require a great deal of thought in order to arrive at the intended meaning. At the very least, three particular items of information must be uncovered during the reading of poetry. An experienced reader of poetry will always determine the identity of the speaker, the occasion of the speech, and the central idea of the poem.
In Dudley Randall's "To the Mercy Killers," the speaker is human. The sex of the speaker cannot be definitely proven. The probability that the speaker is a man is very high due to the graphic use of the language and the grotesque description of slow death. For the most part, women do not speak in this way. The speaker is conscious of the fact that he will one day die. Recognizing the identity of the speaker as human is significant because the reader of the poem will be able to relate to the feelings and emotions of his or her fellow human being.

Through the course of this poem the speaker discovers many things. Some discoveries made are physical while others are mental and emotional. On a physical level the speaker discovers a book, a new author and the power
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that effects the brains development. It is characterized by affecting communication, cognition and social interaction. The spectrum of the disorders ranges from a mild condition called Asperger’s syndrome to a more severe form, which severely impairer’s development. The Office of Communications and Public Liaison states that the disorder affects one and eighty-eight children, however ASD effects boys more frequently than girls (Office of Communications and Public Liaison, 2013). ASD emerges in all age, ethnic and socioeconomic groups. The significant varied character and severity of the disorder is why ASD is considered a spectrum that poses a broad range of symptoms.
In the absence of consistent, certain biomarkers, diagnosis of autism is based on well defined core behavioral symptoms: abnormal social interactions and social communication, and repetitive behaviors and/or restricted interests. Many drugs, including fluoxetine and risperidone, have been used to treat symptoms associated with autism. Risperidone, an atypical antipsychotic that blocks D2 and 5HT2A receptors, has been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reduce the repetitive behavior and self-injurious behavior in children with autism. Fluoxetine, a selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), is being evaluated by the FDA for anxiety and repetitive behaviors in autistic individuals. Serotonin dysregulation is one theory for the etiology of autism (reviewed by Pardo and Eberhart, 2007) and has been linked with comorbid behaviors associated with autism such as depression, anxiety, mood, impulsivity and aggression (reviewed by Soorya et al., 2008; West et al., 2009). Both risperidone and fluoxetine act in the serotonin system. Risperidone antagonizes the serotonin 2A receptor and fluoxetine blocks the serotonin transporter increasing the amount of serotonin available in the synapse.

In the early years of 2009 to 2010 the political process pushed health care through legislation led by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Health care and government, 2013). This process was extraordinarily tiring, as many defenders of the bills passing were present. Many congressional members “dug their heels in”, and wanted to slow down the process even more as confusion about the bill was posed (Health care and government, 2013). Despite opposition by many sides of the American people, a Democrat-dominated House of Representatives passed the bill and the Affordable Care Act was signed into action on March 21, 2010 (Hogberg, 2013). Indeed, all three branches of government were instrumental with the passing the Affordable Care Act into place.
Poetry is often forgotten in our society. Poetry is mistaken for something less than its greater meaning. Four specific poets demonstrate the true meaning of poetry through their words and imagery. These poets use their own language to speak to us in poetry, by describing a major event that has happened in their life. It is truly captivating to hear these poets speak from another aspect that we are not use too.
"The constitutions of most of our States assert that all power is inherent in the people; that... it is their right and duty to be at all times armed." Thomas Jefferson said this quote almost 200 years ago and to this day it still applies. The right to bear arms was such a priority to the founding fathers of this country that it received the second spot on the list of the basic rights of all Americans. This right is in the process of being restricted in order to supposedly reduce crime and homicide. These gun control laws should not be permitted because they restrict law-abiding citizens’ access to firearms, leave people defenseless when a crime does arise, and have been proven futile in other countries.
“It is estimated that there are 310 million non – military guns in America” (O’Brien and Stanton). Many people that own a firearm usually have more than one gun. Also, a majority of gun owners feel that owning a firearm is the best way to protect themselves at home. With the large number of guns said to be in America, there needs to be a way to prevent the number of frequently occurring mass shootings. The solution to this issue is called gun control. Gun control needs to be implied more in our society because gun related crimes are mostly committed by those diagnosed with mental illnesses, there is no contradiction with the second amendment, it has the ability to lower the amount of mass shootings in the United States, and universal background checks help prevent mass shootings.
I do not know how without being culpably particular I can give my Reader a more exact notion of the style in which I wished these poems to be written, than by informing him that I have at all times endeavored to look steadily at my subject; consequently, I hope that there is in these Poems little falsehood of description, and my ideas are expressed in language fitted to their respective importance. Something I must have gained by this practice, as it is friendly to one property of all good poetry, namely, good sense; but it has necessarily cut me off from a large portion of phrases and figures of speech which from father to son have long been regarded as the common inheritance of Poets.
... genetics and environment play a role. Researchers have identified a number of genes associated with the disorder. Studies of people with A.S.D. have found irregularities in several regions of the brain. Other studies suggest that people with autism have abnormal levels of serotonin or other neurotransmitters in the brain. These abnormalities suggest that autism could result from the disruption of normal brain development early in fetal development caused by defects in genes that control brain growth and the regulation of how brain cells communicate with each other. With so many answers as to what may cause autism, it makes treatment for autism particularly difficult as there currently is no one standard “fix.” In fact, there are several types of therapy that may help minimize symptoms of A.S.D. and the effectiveness of each program differs for each individual.
Imagine receiving the news that a loved one or someone you care about has had a tragic or a misfortunate accident in consequence of a gun; this can happen to anyone in the reach of a weapon. Misuse of Guns in America is an irresponsibility of people misusing and abusing the authority of a gun. Americans in the U.S buy and obtain guns all the time; of course, there are background checks done for the people purchasing them, but who knows what that person will do with a weapon this present day, and that does not mean the will be the only one who uses it.The rate of guns being misused by irresponsible people in America is not safe for U.S citizens. Those domestic abusers, criminals, and who are dangerously mentally ill and others should be denied

Although there has been a lot of debate over universal healthcare in America, we have made some progress going in the right direction. President Obama recently passed a bill so that Americans will be able to utilize these services. The issue at hand is the bill has not gone into effect. It is my opinion that the general public believes this bill may never go into affect completely, due to republicans taking the majority of seats in the Senate and Congress. According to an article in the Washington po...
... were CAM. Studies of individual aged 0 to 22 years old were included in this study and pharmacological and CAM treatments were included. It is shown that the intensity of the study was different from the involvement of the groups. Even though some of the interference were “effective’ but greater part was ‘ineffective’. Based on several review studies, not many medications have significant proof for their use and non-use. The choices for medical organization of complete reviews are reducing in autism, mainly reviews regarding pharmacological and CAM treatments. Moreover, certain reviews were most likely to highlight the common consequences of medication which aims a certain type of symptoms throughout the treatment. As a consequence, when selecting interference, it should be surrounded by the circumstance of the practice and escorted by the use of treatment plans.
New Criticism attracts many readers to its methodologies by enticing them with clearly laid out steps to follow in order to criticize any work of literature. It dismisses the use of all outside sources, asserting that the only way to truly analyze a poem efficiently is to focus purely on the words in the poem. For this interpretation I followed all the steps necessary in order to properly analyze the poem. I came to a consensus on both the tension, and the resolving of it.
