Advertising Junk Food to Children This essay will discuss whether the advertisements of junk food are reasonable to advertise and are there other aspects that help obesity to develop in children. Increasing rates of obesity appear to be common to the process of industrialisation and have been linked with many factors, including a more sedentary lifestyle and diets high in fat and sugars and an abundance of food. (Gordon, Richard, 2000) The number of children suffering from obesity has increased dramatically since the mid 1980’s in the UK. However this is not just a UK problem but also a global issue. Obesity is defined as ‘An abnormal accumulation of body fat usually 20% or more over an individual’s ideal body weight. Obesity is associated with the increased risk of illness, disability, and death.’ A large proportion of TV advertising targeted at children is for processed foods; the vast majority of this promotes foods high in fat, sugars or salt. The debate about food advertising and advertising viewed by children is one that has continued for many years. During that time a wealth of evidence has emerged to show that targeting advertising as a means of tackling childhood dietary, nutritional or weight gain problems is completely unjustifiable and ineffective. One of the most heavily studied areas of advertising’s cumulative effects is the impact of commercials on children’s eating habits. Perhaps the worst example is Anheuser-Busch Co., the world's largest brewer, which uses child-enticing cartoon images of frogs, dogs, penguins and lizards in ads for Budweiser beer. These Budweiser cartoon characters are hugely popular with children, just like Joe Camel ads. A KidCom Marketing study once found these Budweiser cartoon character ads were American children's favorite ads. This is no accident. Anheuser-Busch is conducting an advertising campaign to get children to start drinking beer. These Budweiser ads are unconscionable. So are Phillip Morris's Miller Lite "twist to open" commercials, which are among children's top 10 favorite ads, according to another study by KidCom.
Any agency that uses children for marketing schemes spend hundreds of billions dollars each year world wide persuading and manipulating consumer’s lifestyles that lead to overindulgence and squandering. Three articles uncover a social problem that advertising companies need to report about. In his research piece “Kid Kustomers” Eric Schlosser considers the reasons for the number of parents that allow their children to consume such harmful foods such as ‘McDonalds’. McDonalds is food that is meant to be fast and not meant to be a regular diet. Advertising exploits children’s needs for the wealth of their enterprise, creating false solutions, covering facts about their food and deceiving children’s insecurities. It contains dissatisfaction that leads to over consumption. Children are particularly vulnerable to this sort of manipulation, American Psychological Association article, “Youth Oriented Advertising” reveals the facts upon the statics on consumers in the food industries. The relationship that encourages young children to adapt towards food marketing schemes, make them more vulnerable to other schemes, such as, advertising towards clothing, toys and cars. Fast food companies have caused a massive negative impact to society over the last couple of years despite the companies promise to produce healthy and nutritious meals. Many people have already been affected by the damages caused by eating junk food. During the 1950s, the United States Of America had an obesity rate of under 10 percent and as the fast food chain increased in 1975, the obesity rate rose up to a whopping 32 percent and has only kept growing. As the obesity rate increased so had the other forms of diseases that have and will continue to affect people until it has been known that the junk food is the primary cause and to stop or minimise the junk food intake.150 billion dollars (and still increasing) has been spent on obesity related diseases while a 174 billion dollars has been spent for treatment for diabetes and as more people consume junk food so has been the rate for treatment. As a student of Corcoran High School and consumer of lunch meals , I recognize that school districts are in the wrong way to combat obesity. Each year I witness of the limited amount of fruit , flavor milk , never water and something that most of the time is high in salt and oil. Proceed and frozen meals ,are routine. The result are this kind statistics. According to the Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance System , 30.5 % of students are victims of diseases due to a unhealthy diet in schools and home. We are part of this numbers , but we have the change in our hands. For this reason is essential a transformed meal for every student in our school district .
The government has tried and tried to take away our basic rights, hide stuff from us, and are now trying to ban junk food and fast food commercials? I think junk food commercials should not be banned because the government should not have the power the sensor what we watch. It is discrimination towards the companies that pay to put their product on television but no longer can because they are blamed for the nation’s problems. Finally it would take away jobs.
“COOOOOKIE CRISP!” My seven-year old self repeats after Chip the Dog convinced yet another parent that cookies for breakfast are in fact a wonderful idea. Sugar, cereal, and cute little cookies were my favorite things in the world at the time, making this sugar infested cereal a treasure that I needed immediately. Just as the parents acting in the commercial, my parents also said “no cookies for breakfast allowed”. But unlike the Cookie Crisp commercial, it did not end with a dog named Chip barging in, shoving a spoonful of miniature milk filled chocolate chip cookies into my parent’s mouths, magically changing their nutrition driven minds. I begged and pleaded for a short time and then decided to put my slightly manipulative mind to work. I knew that if I couldn’t get what I wanted from Mommy and Daddy, I would go straight to the loving source of my grandparents. All I had to do was snap my tiny fingers and every loudly advertised snack I could imagine would be at my disposal. They took their jobs as grandparents seriously by spoiling me terribly and allowing the “normal” rules to be broken, “our little secret”. Air Heads, Twizzlers, popcorn, and chips, all things wonderful were given to me. This adjusted my mind to think that it was okay to have such a starch filled, trans fatty diet thus lessening my desire for anything healthy.
Is the school lunch program actually helping? Is junk food the cause of obesity? The food program, which requires that schools have to follow strict rules on what they can serve at lunch, currently has 94% of public schools participating but some are considering dropping out. Even though the program is healthier, schools should drop out of the system because schools are losing money, every student does not require the same amount of calories, and junk food isn't the only reason for obesity.

That is until I watched the shiny new toy being played with by the girl my age and of course the cool new one that came into the happy meal, then I’d forget. After seeing the appealing commercial I’d run to my mom and try to slickly mention it. “You know McDonalds has a new Monster’s Inc. toy in their happy meal. Isn’t that great? “Now I realize that back then I was targeted by big companies to beg my parents for things that I didn’t need or that wasn’t good for me in order to make money. As the fast food industry continues to grow throughout not only the United States but the whole world, marketing companies are always looking for ways to broaden the group of people that are interested in buying their product over another company’s. As a marketer for a fast food company it is essential to have a group of people that you can rely on to always buy the company’s product, to many fast food companies they found this group of people to be adolescents and children. Marketing groups specifically market their products to entice this group of people to lure them in. Food is an object that is needed for the survival of a human, but the type of food that humans chose to eat is also not always the best. Because fast food is so cheap and easily accessible just about everywhere you turn your head, many people resort to eating it even though it is very unhealthy. With these factors present, many adults have exposed their children to fast food at a young age, these parents do not always think about the long term effects of feeding their children fast food because they are so caught up in the moment of feeding their kids right then and there; they do not think about the health risks that can occur later as a result from eating fast food now.

Junk food is a favorite in this society. Fast food restaurants make it easier to grab food on the go. The greasier or sweeter food is the better. But junk food and sugary has caused many health problems. If there was a junk food tax, the government was target foods that contain partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, foods that the main source is salt, energy drinks, caffeinated beverages and foods, and soft drinks with high sugar content.(Todorova, Elena 1.1-1.4) I believe adding taxes to junk food could help the decrease many health problem, but I will do more research before I make a decision.
Ban Junk Food Junk food. Is it the responsibility of schools to ban junk food and promote a healthy lifestyle for children of all ages between 6-18? Yes, yes it is. In my opinion, schools promoting a healthy lifestyle is as important as the children’s parents’ responsibility. Schools have as much impact in that department as children are fed during school hours.
