Defining Prostitution
Prostitution is a word which applies to far more circumstances than
its' usual legal definition which is about prohibiting massive
"whoring". I have a very simple way of defining prostitution:
Prostitution is when you do something for money that you wouldn't be
doing without being paid. You will find under this definition that
there are quite a few whores who are not prostitutes, for they
actually love what they do, and would continue to engage in
promiscuous sex even without the monetary reward. What would be
"shocking" to the average person is to realize that the average person
is in fact a prostitute. Most people do the jobs they do only for the
money, not because they actually enjoy the work enough to continue
doing it even without a monetary reward. However prostitution is also
commonly thought to harm the public health and quality of life of many
others not directly active it.
Different societies have viewed prostitution in widely divergent
ways. The three approaches to prostitution I will discuss are the
liberal, the classical Marxist, and the radical feminist approach. A
comparison of these theories of prostitution demonstrates a
significant contrast of philosophical views that prostitution has had
on society.
The liberal positions on prostitution are that prostitution should be
legalized which would eliminate laws prohibiting prostitution and
allow prostitutes to work without fear of state prosecution or
legalization although, they have always seen prostitution as degrading
to women. The liberal feminist support women choices to commodity
their sexuality and argue that the choices are us...

in a certain sense it is important to recognize that the forms that
prostitution take and consequently, the condition of prostitutes,
would vary widely in different parts of the world, and therefore would
require attention to their specific aspects. Although we tend to have
this close-mindedness to the situation, we need to see that
prostitutes are people also. We need to understand that they deserve
the same basic human rights that we do. Just because their profession
is controversial does not mean that they should be treated with less
respect. Prostitutes, for the most part, do not choose to spend the
rest of their lives doing this, nor do they choose that this is what
they want to be when they grow up. It is a trap that many women fall
into and find it very hard to get out of, once you are in.
Prostitution has been as issue in many societies around the world for almost all of recorded history. There has been evidence of brothels and prostitution dating far back into human history. Many different societies have different views, ideals, and reservation about the matter. Some cultures around the world view it as a necessary evil for people who need to support themselves and their families. Others view it as morally evil and socially destructive; helping to rot our society from the inside out. Even still there are cultures who don’t view it as evil at all and even a normal part of life. A person’s view on the act is formed largely based on the culture they are living in. Even sub cultures inside of larger one can have different view on the matter, such as religious groups that denounce it, to some groups in the same culture that say it is okay. Even the gauge of how industrialized a country can determine how that culture views prostitution, with many third world countries being more lenient on the matter, and many first world countries being much more strict on the matter, such as the some of the countries in Europe and also the United States.
You’re skimming through the “for sale” ads online, just wasting time in hopes to find something that will fulfill your every need. You skim across an ad that offers whatever you want, all you have to do is pay the right price. Would you do it? Would you pay? Do you think twice? Because that’s exactly what happens every day when men and women seek sexual favors. It starts with a want, and ends with a dollar sign. It’s prostitution. In today’s society, the debatable conflict of prostitution definitely affects individuals in a negative way; however, there are positive aspects to such an issue as well.
enter the dark world of prostitution, it happens to be the furthest thing from the truth.
Catherine Smith is a single 42 year old woman with two children. Her job as a secretary is no longer sufficient enough to cover her bills. She does not have a college degree and her job will not cover any part of tuition if she does decide to attend college. One night, while coming home late from work, she noticed women walking around on the street counting their earnings for the night. That is when she acquired the idea to become a prostitute. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines prostitution as the act or practice of engaging in promiscuous sexual relations in exchange for money. These type of situations occur on a daily basis. Some women really enjoy having sex, so why wouldn’t they want payment for it as well. Prostitution should be legalized in the United States.
Elizabeth Anderson makes a claim that “The attempt to sell gift value on the market makes a mockery of those values.”(Anderson 188) Anderson uses this claim to object commoditized sex (prostitution). There are two premises that Anderson uses to support her claim. The first premise being the gift value of sex cannot be realized in commercial terms and the second premise being that the gift value of sex is more significant that the use value of sex itself.
Adjunct Professor Michael Lee taught my first English course. Most of the semester we worked on a multi-modal essay. This assignment improved my research and writing skills. I learned to research more deeply of an issue and found factual reasons why I have the opinion about the issue. My topic was about legalizing prostitution. I had two reasons for believing it should be legalized but I had not researched to find facts to support my opinion. Also, after researching I found other benefits and also found information about why it should not be legal. It was a challenge to write in support of what I don’t believe. Not only did it improve my research, but also my written thoughts flowed in order and ideas were organized. I learned to prove
In December of 2011, an article published in the New York Times swept the nation. The article featured Barbara Terry, a fifty-two year old Bronx woman, mother of four and self-proclaimed devout Christian. Barbara attended college for two years, training to become a medical lab technician before she and her husband divorced at the age of 21. Stuck alone without a complete college education and four kids, Barbara turned to working the streets of Hunts Point, a neighborhood in the Bronx. Barbara has been in the profession for 31 years and throughout all those years, she says that she has been arrested over one hundred times. Despite all these arrests, she continues to return to the streets as her primary source of income. “There’s so much money out here, you wouldn’t believe it” (Kilgannon, 2011). Barbara has earned enough income via prostitution to put two children through college and buy a house in upstate New York. Barbara’s experience with prostitution is indicative of the growing interest in the practice and legality of prostitution in the United States.
Prostitution refers to the engagement of a transaction in sexual activities with someone for a payment. The actual act of sex is not illegal, what is criminalized is everything around it – owning a house and selling sex (Alati, 2017). In this paper, I will argue that prostitution laws place prostitutes at a greater risk of harm by forcing them onto the streets and disallowing them to protect themselves. First, I will discuss the key aspects of the decisions elevated in the Bedford case while, providing an outcome of the decision made, and how the government responded to these arguments. Second, I will illustrate how the media depicts the criminalization of prostitution through (insert media coverage source and name). Third, I will state my
Prostitution, considered one of the oldest professions in the world, was legal until 1915 when most states passed laws making it illegal. One of the main reasons for the prohibition of prostitution was to keep soldiers out of the brothels so they would stay focused on the war. After WWII, lawmakers left the prohibition laws in place instead of repealing them. Prostitution should be legal, regulated, and taxed. This would increase the quality of police protection, reduce waste in the judicial system, decrease the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, and increase federal tax revenue.
Prostitution has been a part of our world's culture since the beginning of time, and is the world's oldest profession. Prostitution is defined by the Webster dictionary as “the act or practice of engaging in promiscuous sexual relations especially for money.” If prostitution were legalized, there would a reduction in sex crimes, American citizens would have the freedom to choose any profession within the sex industry and it would provide economic benefits for the local and federal governments, as well as the population.
Prostitution is defined as the exchange of sex acts for anything of value-money, drugs, alcohol-to name a few. The term prostitution is used synonymously with sex labor. There has been a long debate about legalizing and decriminalizing prostitution despite its damaging effects and other related criminal activities, even if there is an economic benefit from its activity. Prostitution should not be legalized for this reason.
In the world, one of the biggest ethical issues that have caused controversy and debate is prostitution. In many countries of the world, prostitution is still considered as illegal; only in few countries, it is legal. According to the utilitarian theories, “the ethical goal is a life rich in pleasure or happiness both in point of quality and quality for the greatest number of people”. Every individual seeks to reduce suffering and increase pleasure or happiness in his or her lives. In Gujarat India, women have been popular for supporting their families through prostitution, while men in this town are pimps and the culture has been existing for centuries, because of which it is difficult to even put an end to it. Act utilitarianism approaches
Throughout America and the entire world, prostitution flourishes. Prostitution is another never ending war like abortion, which society feels is immoral. This immorality leads functionalists, who apply functionalism to this social problem, on a chase to figure out why prostitution is what it is today. Functionalism is the best theory for looking at prostitution. It allows us to see how prostitution changes along with other aspects of society.
The exploitation of prostitution is considered to be one of a serious global issue in most of the countries around the world. Also, the number of prostitution is increasing tremendously each year and seems to be more serious than the past centuries. However, yet very few to none of the countries have completely solved this problem. Saudi Arabia and Netherlands are two examples of the countries that prostitution is still considered to be a problem that the government of both countries cannot ignore. There are different solutions that Saudi Arabia and Netherlands have come up with to solve the problem.
In many cases society has tried to tell you that prostitution is bad, weather it is through movies, books, religious text and many other influential aspects of society, due to the nature of the people who they portray in the act. I believe if people were properly educated into the science of sex, having sex for money would not be considered such a bad thing. When I attended prep school, I met many other kids from Europe, and let’s sat they were a little more comfortable with their sexuality, and in a few of their countries prostitution was even legal.
