Evaluation of a Production of Little Voice
Introduction
Little Voice is set in a Northern town in Britain. It was first
performed in 1992.
The play is based around a girl called LV, LV stands for little voice
as she doesn't ever speak and when she does she has a very soft voice,
almost a whisper she is grieving for her father who has died, she
never speaks and her way of grieving is to sing and listen to the
records her father has left to her. Her Mother, Mary, grieves her lost
youth, this is portrayed in the way she acts and dresses. The
relationship between Mary and LV stems from when LV's father was
alive, Mary felt left out of their 'quiet' activities such as
listening to records. LV is so very quiet, she never makes noise other
than playing her records, Mary fills the space with noise and action,
LV just seems to exist.
The play follows how LVis noticed by a man called Ray who is in a
relationship with Mary. He hears her sing and gets a contract for her
to perform at the local club. Ray becomes engrossed in trying to make
LV a star. When LVstands on the stage she impersonates her favourite
stars and turns into somebody completely different. The relationship
between Ray and Mary comes to an end and their house sets on fire, it
is this fire which makes Mary see that she now has nothing left, her
life is stripped open and we learn why LV has been so quiet for so
long.
One of the main themes of the play is grief, other themes of the play
stem from this one main theme. For example alcoholism is a main part
of the play; it is Mary's way of escaping the harshness of reality.
Both LV and Mary's lives are based aroun...

significant as we finally heard what LV was really feeling; she
emptied her mind of everything. She told of how she never spoke as she
'couldn't get a word in'. We then realise how throughout the play Mary
has filled the space with noise and movement, there had been no room
for LV.
Conclusion
I thought the play was excellent and communicated the story of Little
voice really effectively. I felt I could relate to the down to earth
approach and the depth of the characters. I thought that the way LV
sung in each scene meant that the scenes were broken up and so made
more effective. The story didn't drag on at all and so it ended while
I was still enjoying it. All of the techniques and effects that were
used made the play 'Little Voice' was performed in a really effective
way and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

It shows the different moods that haunted Blanche throughout the play: depression, loneliness, desperation of love and her glimpse of hope willing for a better future in New Orleans.
Characters in the play show a great difficult finding who they are due to the fact that they have never been given an opportunity to be anything more than just slaves; because of this we the audience sees how different characters relate to this problem: " Each Character has their own way of dealing with their self-identity issue..some look for lost love o...
The theme of suffering is emphasized when the motif of loyalty is analyzed throughout the play. The loyalties of all the characters involved seem to work against them and
...onnects his audience to the characters and although the play is written for the Elizabethan era, it remains pertinent by invoking the notion of human nature. He implements themes of love, anger, and impulsiveness and demonstrates the influence these emotions have on human behavior. It is evident that because human nature is constant, people have and will continue to be affected by these emotions.
Our lives are consumed by the past. The past of what we once did, what we once accomplished, and what we once could call our own. As we look back on these past memories we seldom realize the impact these events have on our present lives. The loss of a past love mars are future relationships, the loss of our family influences the choices we make today, and the loss of our dignity can confuse the life we live in the present. These losses or deaths require healing from which you need to recover. The effects of not healing can cause devastation as apparent in the play A Streetcar Named Desire. The theme of A Streetcar Named Desire is death. We encounter this idea first with the death of Blanche and Stella's relationship as sisters. Blanche and Stella had a life together once in Bel Reve and when Stella decided to move on in her life and leave, Blanche never could forgive her. This apparent in the scene when Blanche first arrives in New Orleans and meets Stella at the bowling alley. Stella and Blanche sit down for a drink and we immediately see Blanche's animosity towards Stella. Blanche blames Stella for abandoning her at Bel Reve, leaving Blanche to handle the division of the estate after their parents die. As result of Stella's lack of support, we see Blanche become dependent on alcohol and lose her mental state. Blanche comes to be a a terrible reck through out the play as we learn of the details of her life at Bel Reve. Her loss of the entire estate and her struggle to get through an affair with a seventeen year old student. This baggage that Blanche carries on her shoulders nips at Stella through out eventually causing the demise of her relationship. As Blanche's visit goes on with Stella, the nips become too great and with the help of Stanley, Stella has Blanche committed to a mental hospital, thus symbolizing the death of the realtionship they once had. The next death we encounter in the film is the death of Stella and Stanley's marriage. Our first view of Stanley is of an eccentric man, but decent husband who cares deeply for his wife. However, as as Blanche's visit wears on, we come to see the true Stanley, violent and abusive.
Throughout the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, themes make up very important ingredients for the entire play. The most prominent and important theme is Revenge. Some Shakespeare critics may argue that guilt is the most important theme. However revenge is the most important theme and the reader sees this through revenge advancing the plot, the idea of seeking vengeance allows the reader to learn more about characters, foreshadowing of characters deaths and in the end seeking vengeance causes the majority of main characters deaths.
are two main plots in the play, both based upon the theme of love. The
The first principle character in this play is Blanche DuBois. She is a neurotic nymphomaniac that is on her way to meet her younger sister Stella in the Elysian Fields. Blanche takes two 2 streetcars, one named Desire, the other Cemeteries to get to her little sisters dwelling. Blanche, Stella and Stanley all desire something in this drama. Blanche desired a world without pain, without suffering, in order to stop the mental distress that she had already obtained. She desires a fairy tale story about a rich man coming and sweeping her off her feet and they ride away on a beautiful oceanic voyage. The most interesting part of Blanche is that through her unstable thinking she has come to believe the things she imagines. Her flashy sense of style and imagination hide the truly tragic story about her past. Blanche lost Belle Reve but, moreover, she lost the ones she loved in the battle. The horror lied not only in the many funerals but also in the silence and the constant mourning after. One cant imagine how it must feel to lose the ones they love and hold dear but to stay afterwards and mourn the loss of the many is unbearable. Blanche has had a streak of horrible luck. Her husband killing himself after she exposed her knowledge about his homosexuality, her advances on young men that led to her exile and finally her alcoholism that drew her life to pieces contemplated this sorrow that we could not help but feel for Blanche throughout the drama. Blanche’s desire to escape from this situation is fulfilled when she is taken away to the insane asylum. There she will have peace when in the real world she only faced pain.

Hence, upon analyzing the story, one can conclude the certain themes that parallel through the pages. Firstly, a theme of unity and trust is present at the end of the play. This is supported by the image of the cathedral, which is a place of unity. Most importantly, the notion of equality among people is the main theme within this story. The narrator starts as a biased, idiot, who dislikes all people that are not like himself. He even at times is rude to his wife. Ironically, it takes a blind man to change the man that can literally see, to rule out the prejudices and to teach him that all men are created equal.
There are 3 major themes in the play A Streetcar Named Desire, the first is the constant battle between fantasy and reality, second we have the relationship between sexuality and death, and lastly the dependence of men plays a major role in this book.
about hate as it is about love and the morals of society. The play is
In the play, the characters play a critical role in showing the theme as the ones inflicted with the pain and suffering of love that Shakespeare highlighted. Attacked with pain from the rejection of the one they love, each of the characters suffers from the rejection, linking the characters to the theme that Shakespeare presented in the play. These links to the theme also link the characters to one another at the same time. Characters, like Duke Orsino, Lady Olivia, and Viola/Cesario, along with the minor characters of the play, were the main victims, but also the culprits, of the pain and suffering that Shakespeare stressed.
