Alcohol The topic alcohol brings many things to mind. In my immediate family the only people that drink any type of alcohol are my mother and father. When my dad comes home from work he usually has a beer for a little relaxation and my mom has a glass of wine for dinner. I feel that they are moderate drinkers and I also feel that it sets a good example for my brother and I. If we hadn't gone over this topic in class I would never have known what type of drinkers they were. Now that I think of it I have one relative who has not always lived the good life. If I was writing this paper 8 years ago my aunt Ann would be drinking very heavily right now. That's because she was an Alcoholic. She was in very bad shape for a while until we found her a place to get rehabilitated. During those hard times her husband had to take care of the kids so she wouldn't put bad images into their heads. Now she has recovered and life is great. I was very concerned for her safety and Now that I learned from my notes there are so many things wrong with heavy drinking and that the consequences are to severe I won't do what she did. A couple of other relatives that I have are my uncles. One time me, my father, and two of my uncles went to a bar. Everyone had a alcoholic beverage except me. As time went on my two uncles got pretty wasted and were creating a scene. I felt very uncomfortable and wondered if they knew exactly how stupid they looked. In the future when I am older and have kids of my own I will remember how my father drank in moderation and I will do the same. Unlike my Aunt and two Uncles. Smoking In many households all over the world people are sucking tar, smoke, nicotine, and other harmful ingredients from cigarettes... ... middle of paper ... ... he said It feels cool when you do it. Now he's out of school he lost his job and who knows what other drugs he has tried. I know he has tried hallucinogens but I don't know what else. Health has made me aware of the consequences of drug use. Your heart can become damaged you could get aids from sharing needles, and drugs can mess up your thoughts and movements. A long term affect of drugs is if you have a police record of drug use and you apply for a job you could be turned down because of that. Maybe if my friend took this class he would stop but who knows. I n Health class I learned about subjects that I would have only grazed but because we explored them much deeper I now have a greater understanding of those subjects. This class influenced me to keep myself in shape and out of trouble. If I keep to my word and do just that I will be a better person.

The strongest and most influential person who modeled alcohol use in my childhood was a male relative. I was not completely aware of many of these impacts until adolescence. As a child, I did not know what alcoholism was, I just assumed that the Beefeater Gin stench coming from my relative was his cologne. However, as I grew older and was exposed to a greater variety of people and circumstances, I slowly became aware of alcoholism. I began to incorporate the new experiences I had in relation to alcohol use with a deeper understanding of my extended family. This new awareness was unsettling and painful to me. Many of my relatives were alcoholics. There was never a family brunch, dinner, or casual gathering that was not centered around alcohol. The excessive and consistent reliance on alcohol fueled the arguments and shouting matches I witnessed between my male relatives. Their arguments were always laden with racist, sexi...

Many of us know that to be categorized as an alcoholic one is always drunk and acting out of character, but alcoholism is much more than that. Alcohol Dependence is a disease characterized by: a strong need or compulsion to drink, the frequent inability to stop drinking once a person has begun, the occurrence of withdrawal symptoms (nausea, sweating, shakiness) when alcohol use is stopped after a period of heavy drinking, and the need for increasing amounts of alcohol in order to feel an affect. Most experts agree that alcoholism is a disease just as high blood pressure, diabetes and arthritis are diseases. Like these other diseases, alcoholism tends to run in the family. ...ring to be accepted into the popular group of friends and yearning to forget their worries, turn to alcohol to satisfy themselves. However, alcohol does not make them special nor does it relieve their worries. My dad, Toni, and Lynn's experiences helped me see the effects of alcohol and the consequences of excessive drinking. Being at a time where they need to feel acceptance and control, teenagers choose to drink, believing that it will not only free them from parental dictation, but also gain them the approval of their peers. However, their choice does not show their independence because they are really following their peers' influence. Instead of enabling themselves to get away from their worries, they create more problems for themselves. With all the troubles that I know drinking cause, I, Yen Nguyen, will never turn to alcohol for any solutions to my problems.
The wellness course impacted me in such a positive way that it is pretty difficult to describe it. I learnt what it really means to take care of my person. The class actually helped me deal with the stressful environment in Summer Bridge. In addition, It taught me how to recognize and accept that change is part of each other 's life. More, I learnt that thing can be really difficult and we can only overcome it through our own personal care and how we take advantage about the resources around us. Furthermore, it
This is issue is huge among numerous people. Even if someone is not smoking, being in the presence of someone who is smoking could impact the non-smokers health. The use of tobacco can cause around eleven different types of cancer, including cancer of the mouth, cancer of the throat, and leukemia (“Smoking and Health Problems”). “If you are a regular smoker, you are 250 times more likely to killed by its effects before you are 65 than you are to be murdered” (Ward 17). Almost instantly after the intake of smoke from a cigarette, the teeth are left with a film changing then to a dingy, dirty color. Opposite from a short-term effect, an endless repercussion of inhaling tobacco is the thick, dark tar it leaves behind in person’s lungs after each use of a cigarette (Beil). Throughout history, society has engaged in taking substances such as alcohol, that alter our physical being or our psychological state of mind. There are many experiences and pressures that force people to feel like they have to drink in order to cope with life, but for many alcohol is a part of everyday life, just like any other beverage. Alcohol is introduced to us in many ways, through our family, television, movies, and friends’. These “sociocultural variants are at least as important as physiological and psychological variants when we are trying to understand the interrelations of alcohol and human behavior”#. How we perceive drinking and continue drinking can be determined by the drinking habits we see, either by who we drink with, or the attitudes about drinking we learn over the years. The chances of people drinking in ways that can harm others and ultimately themselves can be seen by the correlation of educational lessons, cultural beliefs and the usage of alcohol. Looking at all the possibilities, the complex question we must ask is why do people drink? Is it through their defiance of law, the accessibility of alcohol, teachings of others or the values set in place in their society?

Smoking can damage nearly every organ of the body and also causes nearly one of every five deaths in the United States each year.
Smoking cigarettes is a detrimental practice not only to the smoker, but also to everyone around the smoker. According to an article from the American Lung Association, “Health Effects” (n.d.), “Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., causing over 438,000 deaths per year”. The umbrella term for tobacco use includes the use of cigarettes, cigars, e-cigs and chewing tobacco. While tobacco causes adverse health consequences, it also has been a unifying factor for change in public health. While the tobacco industries targets specific populations, public health specifically targets smokers, possible smokers, and the public to influence cessation, policies and education.
Every year new medical reports are issued regarding the harmful effects of smoking cigarettes. Hundreds of thousands of people around the world die every year from diseases caused by smoking. Approximately one in two lifetime smokers will die from their habit. Half of these deaths will occur in middle age. The most common of the diseases caused by smoking is cancer, of course. Not only is it a cause of lung cancer, but cancer of the larynx, and the esophagus, and it contributes to the development of cancers of the bladder, pancreas, and kidney. Lung cancer comes from the tar in the cigarettes. The tar coats your lungs like soot in a chimney. It does not make a difference if a smoker changes to low-tar cigarettes because smokers will take a deeper puff to get the same affect as a regular cigarette. This causes them to draw the tar deeper into their lungs causing even more damage.
