Methods of Technology Forecasting and Analysis for Firms
There is a great need for firms to consider the future. Given the rate of technological innovation and the scope and impact of disruptive technologies, if firms are to predict and exploit their future markets, the role for technological forecasting and analysis is likely to become more prominent.
In this paper, two methods (Delphi & Scenario Writing) will be examined in terms of their relative merits and use. The attention will then turn to the nature of use within the firm of both techniques in a technological forecasting context.
Delphi
The Delphi method can be traced back to 1944 when the US military prepared a forecast of future technological capabilities that might be of interest. In 1946, Project RAND (an acronym for Research and Development) was established with a brief to study the "broad subject of inter-continental warfare other then surface."
The problems encountered by this project and subsequent work centred on the conflicting information solicited from the 'experts'. Single experts sometimes suffer biases; group meetings suffer from "follow the leader" tendencies and a reluctance to abandon previously stated opinions. In order to overcome these shortcomings the basic notion of the Delphi method were developed in the 1950s and 1960s at the RAND Corporation. The first uses of Delphi were in the forecasting of military requirements in the context of the 'cold war' with the Soviet Union.

The ability to capture values along the Technology Adoption Lifecycle determines not just how successful a firm will be, but whether it will create competitive advantage through technology. Businesses with large fixed costs, capital-intensive business plans, and specialized asset bases will face the challenge to maintain its strategic continuity because it is generally prohibitively expensive to change direction to response to any conceivable structural change.
The two main issues in this case are the project analysis and financial forecasting. The project should be analyzed before doing the forecasting, because any recommendations on the project will affect financial forecasting for the next two years.
A great deal of information was covered this week such as, the necessity in which businesses need to effectively plan and set objectives, the strategies utilized and how they are executed to obtains results, and how managements decisions can potentially affect those results. Although each topic covered was found to be interesting and informational, there was something in particular that struck a chord, which was how business establishments have to be flexible and adaptable and in many instances plan and change their strategies of today, in order to keep up with the evolving technology of tomorrow. Something that one often thinks about is how individuals use technology today and how companies that provide that technology are adapting. For instance, author Richard Daft of the textbook, Management, 12th ed. brings to light the potential issues that Intel is facing explaining “As another example of an external threat, Intel, whose microprocessors power most PCs, is being hurt by the decline in demand for personal computers as more people turn to tablets and smartphones.” (Daft, 2016, pg. 259). Various agencies seek Bruce Berkowitz’s input on information technology on warfare due to his experience. He holds an academic research position at the Hoover Institute at Stanford University and is a senior analyst at the RAND Corporation, a research organization that develops solutions to public policy challenges to help make communities throughout the world safer and more secure, healthier and more prosperous. He began his career at the Central Intelligence Agency and served as a staff member for the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. Since leaving government, Berkowitz has combined careers as a widely published author and a consultant to the Defense Department and other government agencies in an effort to deliver the message of the importance of information technology.

The topic of this paper is Irving Janis’s concept of groupthink. There has been an increase in the utilization of groups or teams of people who come together in the decision-making process. There are many benefits to group decision-making with each member brings their own perspectives, beliefs, and ideas to the table. Controlled Requirement Expression (CORE) was developed for the British Aerospace programs while the UK Ministry of Defence was carrying out a requirement analysis (Hull et al., 2010). The fundamental component of the CORE methodology is viewpoints as different users see systems in different ways. There are many different stakeholders involved in a system; using CORE methodology involves finding all the different viewpoints of those stakeholders that have an interest in the system whether it’s a person, role or organisation ext.… (Sommerville and Sawyer, 2000). By organising viewpoints hierarchy it assists experts to read the scope and supports the analysis process. CORE Methodology is extensively used for real time system requirements specification.
The Nimsoft project plan will be derived using discovery-driven planning and by discovering what has already been discovered. Discovery-driven planning offers firms an organized approach to planning for new ventures in emerging markets. Given the uncertainty of new disruptive technology markets, discovery-driven planning drives firms to make assumptions about the organization and the emerging markets, then revise these assumptions as the market develops. Unlike conventional approaches, which focus on projections and prematurely define specific targets, discovery-driven planning focuses on meeting assumptions at key milestones and continually planning and adapting while the emerging market evolves. When it comes to safety most people think they are safe, and they have a true understanding on how to work safe. Human nature prevents us from harming ourselves. Our instincts help protect us from harm. Yet everyday there are injuries and deaths across the world due to being unsafe. What causes people to work unsafe is one of the main challenges that face all Safety Managers across the world.
The Federal Aviation Administration in its System Safety Process Steps handbook defines a hazard as “a condition, event, or circumstance that could lead to or contribute to an unplanned or undesired event” (Federal Aviation Administration, 2005, p. 1). The focus here will be on the “unplanned” event and the desire to avoid any injury, illness, or death of people and any damage to equipment or property; or harm to the environment. I will take a look at the identification of hazards as they pertain to aviation both through observation of current events and through analysis of past events. After looking into hazard identification I will next look at hazard assessment. The process of determining the likelihood the hazard will occur and the impact the hazard could have. Next I will examine some of the control measures that can be employed to mitigate the hazard. Finally, I will look at hazard analysis in Safety Management Systems (SMS) as an ongoing effort to improve safety continuality. After all the mitigation of hazards is what SMS is all about.

For an organization, understanding how to manage these innovations is essential for their proper utilization and implementation. With technological advancements and innovations constantly emerging, it is important for an organization to stay aware of which new technological innovations can help them be successful. Organizations are always looking to set themselves apart from competition through innovation.
