Sources of Socialization
Each and every day we receive information from our society about our society. This information, or culture comes from many different sources. We are taught, or socialized, to be members of our society by our family, in school, by our peer group and mass media. These four groups are known as agents of socialization. By it's very nature society adapts and changes and so does the structure of and the influence of the four agents. Of the four agents, mass media has been the fastest changing and has grown most in its influence. We are, after all, living in the information age. At any given moment, we can access information on over 400 cable channels, newspapers and magazines by the dozens and millions of printed pages on the Internet. At no other time in the history of man have we had as many sources of information. This does bring up one very interesting question: Are the mass media sources providing accurate, unbiased information? Or is it possible that some of these purveyors of information are hyping up or perhaps even inventing their messages?
One of the most entertaining sources of "information" is the evening news. Of course, the actual news program is only half the entertainment. The other part of the "show" is the various teasers that serve as the advertisements for the "main event". Syndicated columnist Dave Berry reported in one of his Sunday columns the best example of these teasers: "Brassieres of death… news at 6:00pm." Teasers are those snippets of information that start with phrases like "Are Your children drinking contaminated milk at school," "Watch our report tonight: Your health may depend on it", or "our special report could save you thousands'. If the stories are so import...

...'s said and done we haven't told you a thing
We all know that Crap is King
Give us dirty laundry!"
"You don't really need to find out what's going on
You don't really want to know just how far it's gone
Just leave well enough love
Eat your dirty laundry"
The real problem with the news media is that there are people who believe that the news shows portray reality. A growing part of our society depends on the television for most if not all of their knowledge. It is this segment of society that can be most easily manipulated. Every person who stored up five hundred gallons of water for Y2k when asked why will answer "the news said to." It is blind adherence to apparent authority that will allow those in power to gain more and more control. I say fight back: Read A Book! Shape your mind and in the process create a more informed and enlightened society!
The media is the main source of information for America today. Tocqueville would call the media the "intellectual authority"(Tocqueville 13) in America. "Everybody there adopts great numbers of theories, on philosophy, morals, and politics, without inquiry"(Tocqueville 11) These forms of media, newspapers, television and radio to name a few are filled with opinions and ideas that people just accept. Many of the leading media corporations are run by a handful of people. This means that the ideas and opinions that the masses are accepting are those ideas and opinions of a certain few people, a minority.
Media platforms like television and radio primarily spread propaganda created by the government. Citizens spend a lot of time watching television or listening to the radio and it’s a big part of their life. Almost everyone in the city owns a television or radio and believes things they see and hear from them. Montag escapes the police, but the T.V. chase is still playing out because they don’t want people to know that they let a fugitive get away. They found an innocent man on the street, labeled him as Montag, then killed him on the broadcast. “‘They’re faking. You threw them off at the river. They can’t admit it. They know they can hold their audience only so long. The show’s got to have a snap ending, quick!’... ‘The innocent man stood bewildered’… ‘The victim was seized by Hound and camera in a great spidering, clenching grip’” -Granger (Bradsbury 142). Media propaganda is so powerful today because everyone is susceptible to it. The press (newspapers, magazines, and T.V.) uses their tactics to shape people’s opinions. According to Johnnie Manzaria, the press is important because the most current news and info is spread through them everyday. People can believe anything the media says, because they have a popular opinion or reputation. Even if they spread propaganda, some people will inevitably believe it because “the news said so”, and is a very influential resource ("Media's Use of Propaganda to Persuade
When it comes to mass media there is no personal contact between us and the people send the information. Out of all the mass media television has the most influence on socialization because just about everyone has one or more televisions in their home. There is a lot of violence in our media now a day which can have an adverse effect on people. For example children see violence on television and they might think its ok, they might show aggressive behavior towards others because they learned this from television. The agents of socialization thus have a very profound effect on our personal and conceptual development. They help us interact and communicate with society and also to understand our social roles. However, the impact these agents have on our lives, and consequently on society, also depends largely on the parameters of time and space. For instance, these agents, though performing similar functions worldwide, may have contradicting impact on the mindset of the people of a country at war, as opposed to the one at peace (Baxamusa, B. (2012, November 22). Agents of
From politics to weather, anyone who works for news media knows that they have to be unbiased on the information they report to millions of Americans. As citizens with little free time,we have no choice but to trust what information is given in newspapers, radios and televisions. However, only 4 out of every 10 Americans say they truly believe what their news channel televise, a historical low in America. News channels, especially in the big corporations, are being corrupted with prejudice information, imbalance of news coverage, and distorted stories.
Information is supposed to be fair, but in today's world you can’t trust anything you hear about. There are false facts on major topics, and they tell you what you want to hear often leaving out information that may change people's view. They change people by making them watch certain news reports. If you notice, in recent years a majority of the news report have been about violence such as, shootings or terrorist, but why does the media focus on it? Another thing that happens quite often in the media is subliminal messaging, which is subtle details in the content that reference to something bigger, most commonly it is perversion or possibly something bigger. The media’s jobs is to provide important and true information. In today's society the media is so controlled and provides so much biased information.
There is an association between the development of mass media and social change, although the degree and direction of this association is still debated upon even after years of study into media influence. Many of the consequences, either detrimental or beneficial, which have been attributed to the mass media, are almost undoubtedly due to other tendencies within society. Few sociologists would refute the importance of the mass media, and mass communications as a whole, as being a major factor in the construction and circulation of social understanding and social imagery in modern societies. Therefore it is argued that the mass media is used as “an instrument”, both more powerful and more flexible than anything in previous existence, for influencing people into certain modes of belief and understanding within society.
The statement above may shock most people, and it may come as no surprise to others. The topic of media as a tool of influence seems to have gained popularity in recent years. Many may not realize it, but people who consume media are being influenced to think and believe a certain way. If you have ever read a newspaper, a magazine, or turned on a television, radio, or online news outlet, chances are you have seen or heard the exact same story, explained almost exactly the same on almost every
Both victims and offenders of crimes of violence tend to be of a younger demographic, and incidents tend to be concentrated in poor neighbourhoods. Therefore, it is important to determine the process through which adolescents come to participate in violent behaviour and the conditions particular to disadvantaged neighbourhoods that foster adolescents’ propensity for violent behaviour. Sutherland’s theory of differential association is particularly useful for explaining the process involved in engaging in deviant behaviour, and it is helpful in explaining why disadvantaged neighbourhoods have the conditions that encourage deviant behaviour. Therefore, by applying socialization theory to crimes of interpersonal violence, this paper will argue
The news twists the truth, and is biased. Currently, 60 percent of media claims are false or worse. About 57 percent of american viewers are unaware they are being deceived by the media. When it comes to the news, americans always want to know the truth in what's going on around the world but the news lies in order to get the best story out there or even make small things bigger so it may become a bigger story or issue. Our views on the world are so controlled by the media. I'm gonna go in depth about the corruption in the media and news stations.
Socialization is the process of passing down norms, customs, and ideologies that are important to the society by the previous generations to the younger generations. The school system is a social agency that was created to enhance the processes of socialization through education. The importance of school as an agent of socialization can be best explained by the amount of time students spend in school and in activities happen around school. The manifest functions of school are to educate students the social norms, and the knowledge and skills that help them become economically productive in order to benefit the society. But students not only learn from the academic curriculum but they also benefit from socialize with their teachers and peers.
The Mass Media has made a huge impact on society for over 100 years now, from newspapers to the internet; media has shaped our society for better and for worse. The Mass Media has been used for several different things over time including propaganda, advertisement, entertainment, and information. Since the beginning of Mass Media, it has been growing rapidly becoming much more involved in our daily lives than it ever has been. The Mass Media has the power to heavily influence our daily actions and even our thought processes. This tool can be used to control a lot of what the general population knows, but what if what we know is a lie?
The Socialisation Process The socialisation process is the way by which we learn acceptable behaviour in our culture. This process involves social control, as it. is an attempt by others to shape the way we behave. As we develop certain values and adopt particular norms, this too becomes a form of social control, as we place limits on what we consider to be.
Newspapers and nightly news shows have become a business. They no longer go by the public services values they once stood by (Sensationalism, 2005). Instead of being the fourth branch of government, they are just like any other money making business. It is no longer a race to put out the truth; it is more a race for dollars and control. Sensationalism is purely fueled by money and popularity. If a news outlet garners a large amount of popularity, they can swing votes, and influence voters. Sensationalism has already affected many political situations. Sensationalism has proven to spread like a virus. If sensationalism is not controlled, there is no way the news outlets can be the advocate for the people.
In Dictionary.com (2017d), the definition of socialization in culture is crucial for an individual to develop as it is self-development, interpersonal and interactional skills for people to have the courage and spirit to participate and function within any kinds of festivals and events and get involved in the social life and interaction with other people. Family, friends, school, and peer groups and individual are the social groups that strongly enforced the socialization throughout an individual’s lifetime and it is for ensuring the society’ cultural features will be inherited by the new generations (Dictionary.com, 2017d).
In our democratic society, mass media is the driving force of public opinion. Media sources such as Internet, newspaper, news-broadcasts, etc, play significant roles in shaping a person’s understanding and perception about the events occurred in our daily lives. But how much influence does the mass media poses on our opinion? Guaranteed by the First Amendment in American Constitution, the media will always be there to inform us about the different events or issues they feel are important for the public. The media constantly bombards us with news, advertisements, etc, wher...
