Forces that Affect Leadership Styles
A good leader uses all three styles, depending on what forces are involved between the followers, the leaders, and the situation. Some examples include:
· Using an authoritarian style on a new employee who is just learning the job. The leader is competent and a good coach. The employee is motivated to learn a new skill. The situation is a new environment for the employee.
· Using a participative style with a team of workers who know their job. The leader knows the problem well, but he wants to create a team where the employees take ownership of the project. The employees know their jobs and wan to become part of the team. The situation allows time.
· Using a delegative style with a worker who knows more about the job than you. You cannot do everything! The employee needs to take ownership of her job. Also, the situation might call for you to be at other places doing other things.
· Using all three: Telling your employees that a procedure is not working correctly and a new one must be established (authoritarian). Asking for their ideas and input on creating a new procedure (participative). Delegating tasks in order to implement the new procedure (delegative).
Forces that influence the style to be used included a number of things such as:
· How much time is available.
· Are relationships based on respect and trust or on disrespect?
· Who has the information – you, your employees, or both?
· How well your employees are trained and how well you know the task.
· Internal conflicts.
· Stress levels.
· Type of task. Is it structured, unstructured, complicated, or simple?
· Laws or established procedures.

While understanding what leadership is, it is also important to understand what leadership is not. Almost any one can be elected, selected, promoted or succeeded; there fore leadership is not a position. Giving too much power to one individual can be detrimental to the leader, the employees and the organization therefore leadership is not building a personality cult. Effective leadership is being dispensable and the mark of a good leader is demonstrated by the fact that the show can and must go on with or without that particular individual therefore leadership is not being indispensable although many would like it to be. Lastly, leadership is about being responsible for the decisions you make leadership is not about blaming others when you do not achieve your desired outcome.
First of all, I would like to define leadership by quoting Chester I. Barnard: “Leadership is the quality of behavior of individuals whereby they guide people or their activities in organising efforts”. In my opinion this statement is absolutely true and explains the term in its best way. Therefore, it would be logical to state that leader is the person who is at the center of the power structure of the group, the one who keeps everyone in the group together, forms the goals and motivates people to achieve those goals. Leadership is a very influential chain of actions. Only leader is to shape and regulate, control and change various things inside the group like attitude, behavioral norms, and performance. Mostly, leaders
The authoritarian style of leadership for many may seem harsh and extremely cut and dry. However that is not the case. For some people the best way to function is to create a system that works best for their planning ideas and methods. The Authoritarian style of leadership is the best method in this scenario. It allows one to plan in great detail how a scenario should play out and what each person involved should to do to meet the end goal. Perhaps because of the word authoritarian it seems
The extreme leadership style of the Authoritarian can have a negative effect on team members. A characteristic of this leader is one who makes all the decisions and passes the directives to subordinates who are expected to carry these out under very close supervision. Because open communication is vital to any project, these perceptions can hurt team performance.
To me, leadership is the ability to inspire the people around you in any situation and under any circumstances, to work or live for a common purpose, and to be able to handle anything that comes your way. The actual definition of leadership seems so unclear because of the many responsibilities one person has to hold and attain as part of being a leader. Leadership is essential to any group of people or organization. Some of the major characteristics of being a leader are: confidence in your self and others, able to keep calm under stress, dedication, pride, setting a Christian example, inspiring, strong willed, always honest, committed, able to communicate with others, and open minded. There are a lot of people who are smart and have good ideas but they can not lead. Having a good idea that is worth following is not enough. Someone might want to lead the world to think a certain way or another person might have ideas to make a failing ...
According to the report “Six leadership styles: selecting the right leader” (2016) coercive style is a one- way communication, where the leader give directions that needs to follow. This style is mainly used in a critical situation or when protocol needs to monitor. Alongside there is authoritative, where the leader makes a clear vision for the followers. Also, the leader with this type of style has the ability to win over the interest of his follower’s to walk in the same path (Six leadership styles: selecting the right leader, 2016). Hence, this is effective especially when a new employees started work and need guidance.
Leadership is complex so you must use a variety of styles because the people that you lead have different styles of learning, understanding and performing. You can not succeed in leadership if you are not willing to change your behavior style as warranted. Changing your behavior style will also enable you t...
These leaders are also known as participative leaders, this style is usually one of the most effective and leads to higher productivity, and tends to increase group moral (Northouse, 2012).
A key managerial responsibility is to clearly present the expectations of any delegated assignment. This includes but is not limited to, internal and external deadlines, project perimeters, and available resources. An effective way to fully entrust an employee with delegated responsibility would be to obtain an agreement with the employee. This will afford the employee with the opportunity to determine how to approach the task. Clarifying the assignment and obtaining an agreement relieves the manager from having to take full ownership if the outcome is unsuccessful.
However, in management, this type of situation is commonly referred to as delegating. Here, the employees do not require a lot of supervisions. They follow directions and instructions given by their managers and supervisors to the letter. However, in delegating, there is a low relationship level between the employee and their
Define the word leadership can be a perplexing endeavor, due to the varying context that the term leadership can be associated with. This is especially difficult when trying to put it in your own words. To me, leadership, or one who is placed in a leadership role, is one who leads by example, and does not refrain from making and owning decisions regardless of results or consequence. Further, leadership traits are inherent, and cannot be learned; either you have them or you don’t.
not having any interest in their suggestions to the employee that thinks they were hired
What is leadership? Leadership is defined as a process by which a individual will influence others to obtain goals. Leaders will guide, direct motivate, or inspire others. Leadership is defined by not only traits but actions as well. Leaders are inspirational, trustworthy and charismatic. Many people may think a manger is leader. Although leadership and management go hand in hand, they are not the same. Everyone has their own beliefs about what characteristics an effective leader should have. To me, communication skills, critical thinking skills, and having a vision are few characteristics of becoming an effective leader. A leader is not only born, but made. Some are born as leaders or some are made to be leaders.
Consultive likely to result in employees becoming angry. Democratic it is categorized by a discussion with the employees and their involvement in the making of plans and policies. They encourage participation in decision-making. Free-rein avoids influence and responsibility. The non-interest type of leader passes on the responsibility for decision-making to their employees and takes a minimum of initiative in an organization. The leader gives no direction and allows the group to establish its goals and work out its problems.
Leadership is an important factor of knowing how and why events in society happened in certain ways. Leadership in certain environment allows people to distinguish the past, and possibly attempt to assume the future, culture and structure of that environment. Leadership is defined in many different ways, Max Weber, for example, believed “a leader possessed power by virtue of his position (1922).” But in 1938 Chester Bernard defined leadership as “The ability of a superior to influence the behavior of subordinates and persuade them to follow a particular course of action (Barnard 1938).” With all the different definitions of leadership that is out there, the ultimate meaning of leadership is pretty simple because the meaning in the in word itself. An individual with leadership skills is assumed to lead his or her followers to success. In today’s society, many people believe that an effective leader not only bring the people of the organization together but also strive to bring success to the organization as a whole.
Autocratic I (A1). The leader takes a decision completely at his discretion without the knowledge or consent of the team members in this style of leadership. This style of decision making is possible only in cases where there is not a lot at stake with the out come of this decision, when the employees’ decision is not exactly crucial for the outcome of the project, or when a leader thinks decision can be arrived at based on the information at hand and thinks any additional information isn’t needed from the team members to take a good and calculated decision.
