Bolivia
Bolivia is located in the west-central part of South America and is the fifth largest country
of the continent having an area about twice the size of Spain. Bolivia is landlocked
bordering five countries; Brazil on the northeast, Paraguay to the southeast, Argentina on
the south, and Chile and Peru on the west. The main physical feature of Bolivia is the
Andes Mountains, which define the country's three geographic zones. First is the
Altiplano, or plateau region, which lies between the Cordillera Occidental (west) and the
Cordillera Real (northeast). On the northern end of the Altiplano lies the Lake Titicaca,
the highest navigable body of water in the world. Secondly are the Yungas which form a
transition zone between the peaks of the Andes and the Amazonian forest. Lastly are the
Lowlands which make up over two-thirds of the national territory; north and east of the
Andes. Most of Bolivia's important rivers are found in the northern lowlands all which
eventually flow into the Amazon. (Box 234, 277, 314)
The area of modern Bolivia was controlled by Spanish conquest in 1525. The
territory of Bolivia, a part of the ancient empire of the Incas, was conquered in 1538 by
the Spanish conquistador Hernando Pizarro. As Spanish royal authority weakened during
the Napoleonic wars, judgment against colonial rule grew. Between 1808 and 1810, the
Wars of Independence took place in Upper Peru which constituted efforts to achieve
independence. The revolt on May 25, 1809 was one of the first in Latin America. On July
16, 1809, Upper Peru proclaimed itself an independent state. The Battle of Ayacucho in
1824 was the final battle that effectively ended Spanish rule in Upper Peru. On August 6,

The Republic of Chile, or Chile, is a South American country. It can be found west of both Bolivia and Argentina and south of Peru. It is a Southern Cone country, one that is south of the Tropic of Cancer, as well as a coastal country. Chile holds the title of longest north-south country in the world, stretching north to south approximately 2,670 miles and from east to west, only 217 miles (as cited in Wikipedia, 2013). Due to its geographical location, Chile has a remarkable climate and landscape.

A series of independence movements had marked most of South America, or “Nueva Granada” in particular during the vast time period of the early 16th century up until the late 18th century – early 19th century. An introduction of the time period which dates back to the late 15th century, illustrates how the Southern portion of the now Colombia had become a part of the Incan Empire whose central base had been located deep into Peru. Only the enlightened historians and those that have done thorough research of the time period have noted the existence concerning the various Indian tribes that roamed freely throughout portions of the land much before the emergence of the Spaniards into the territory.
The American Revolution did much more than any of our founding fathers had ever imagined, it started a movement that would threaten the very roots of colonialism across the globe. Setting an example of how a David could overcome a Goliath, the United States inspired regions such as Latin America to fight for their rights and liberties as well. One such region that embraced the message was Upper Peru, which would later be known as Bolivia. With some key tipping points that caused the war, the leaders of the soon to be formed nation rallied its troops and won several major battles, but even they couldn’t prevent the tough times that lay in the early years of the nation. From the year 1809, Upper Peru was engaged in a revolution against Spanish Colonial rule that would span over 16 years, ultimately yielding freedoms for several Latin nations, including the formation of Bolivia.
