Supporting Christian Charities
Throughout the ages the bible has taught Christians to give to those
who are less fortunate than our selves. If you are to call your self a
Christian you should live by these teachings. The Roman Catholic
believes are based on tradition and the bible. The bible is the word
of God put into words for Christians to worship and to try to live up
to. The bible is the direction for Christian living. In many stories
Jesus shows us that by supporting and helping those who are less
fortunate than ourselves we are pleasing God. It has been a Christian
tradition to continue the work of Jesus by helping others and trying
to show people the importance of helping others. The church throughout
the ages has followed the policy of helping the poor.
Pope John Paul II spoke many times about the poor and what we can do
in order to help. He stated that, "Going without things does not only
consist of giving away things we don't need, but sometimes giving away
things that we do need". At the end of mass the priest says "Go in
peace to love and serve the lord" this is the priest encouraging
Catholics to serve God locally and worldwide. The Eucharist must lead
Catholics to care for all Gods people especially the poor.
In Vatican II the church instructed Christians to remember God's
Saying, 'feed the man dying of hunger, for if you do not feed him, you
are killing him'. This statement encourages Christians to help the
problem of hunger because if they are not part of the solution they
are part of the problem.
There where three points set out by Pope Paul VI by which Christians
can help alleviate the problems of poverty....

...he poor is part of a constant tradition. This
love is inspired by Jesus' concern for the poor which is in reflected
in many things for example the beatitudes when Jesus shows that a
person can be poor in many ways such as a person may be poor which may
mean they don't have much personal possessions or money or a person
can be poor in spirit which means that they have generally been a bad
person.
Catholics have a responsibility to support catholic and Christian
charities and have to support all people in need. We should obtain our
motivation from God. When we follow Jesus' commands we are ensured
that we have his support "I am with you always to the very end of
time".
Works of charity and kindness given to people in need reflect just
where people stand in relation to the kingdom of God, and to Jesus
himself.

As we have looked in to the Christian worldview of God, our humanity, the Son of God, and the restoration of our lives back into God’s purpose. Now we have a better understanding of what it means to be a member of the Christian community. God wants believers to dwell in union and in community having the same mind that is in Jesus Christ (Phil 2:1-11). This paper showed how God and Jesus Christ are at the fundamental core of all Christian beliefs regardless of the countless differences many Christians may
Furthermore, Pope Francis believes that the insatiable lust for money is the root cause of the gap between the the rich and poor. He believes that the greed of the affluent has caused many of the global crises we face today. It undeniable that we as a people have begun to worship false gods;money. Francis calls this“the idolatry of money”. He stated that the “thirst for power and possessions” corrupts people from treating others fairly. Unless equal opportunities are provided to the poor, conflict will eventually breakout because inequality provokes violence.
Catholic Community Services of Ogden has been a front line social service agency since 1945. From that time on, they have provided relief to poverty stricken in the northern Utah community. This paper will look at some of the problems facing children in poverty today. It will explain some of the services provided by Catholic Community Services of Ogden, as well as, how those services relate to children in poverty. This paper will examine some of the generalist social work roles performed at Catholic Community Services of Ogden, plus any biases, transference, or counter-transference issues I might encounter if I worked there. Despite the fact that their funding comes completely through donations, Catholic Community Services is a significant part of the social welfare delivery system because they empower families, they provide parenting education to new mothers, and they work directly to relieve some of the pressures of poverty.
In 1630, the Massachusetts Bay Company set sail to the New World in hope of reforming the Church of England. While crossing the Atlantic, John Winthrop, the puritan leader of the great migration, delivered perhaps the most famous sermon aboard the Arbella, entitled “A Model of Christian Charity.” Winthrop’s sermon gave hope to puritan immigrants to reform the Church of England and set an example for future immigrants. The Puritan’s was a goal to get rid of the offensive features that Catholicism left behind when the Protestant Reformation took place. Under Puritanism, there was a constant strain to devote your life to God and your neighbors. Unlike the old England, they wanted to prove that New England was a community of love and individual worship to God. Therefore, they created a covenant with God and would live their lives according to the covenant. Because of the covenant, Puritans tried to abide by God’s law and got rid of anything that opposed their way of life. Between 1630 and the 18th century, the Puritans tried to create a new society in New England by creating a covenant with God and living your life according to God’s rule, but in the end failed to reform the Church of England. By the mid 1630’s, threats to the Puritans such as Roger Williams, Anne Hutchinson, and Thomas Hooker were being banned from the Puritan community for their divergent beliefs. 20 years later, another problem arose with the children of church members and if they were to be granted full membership to the church. Because of these children, a Halfway Covenant was developed to make them “halfway” church members. And even more of a threat to the Puritan society was their notion that they were failing God, because of the belief that witches existed in 1692.
Today's news is full of speculation and debate about the national debt, taxes and potential cuts to vital programs that serve those in need. However, the conversation often seems overly caught up in the finer points of politics and media coverage rather than the real people that these decisions affect. I think it's fair to say that American attitudes toward the poor are more often than not, disdain and fear. There's a common myth that people are forced into poverty because they are simply lazy or inferior, the truth is it is harder to feed and clothe your family than ever before. Poverty in this country is not accidental, it is a direct result of funneling wealth upstream; the rich get richer and the poor suffer. " The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want " Mark 14:7.
We as individuals alongside the Catholic Church play a crucial role in being able to make a difference in not only the lives of people experiencing homelessness but also to the lives of people who are more disregarded in society. The Catholic Church already undertakes many charity works and distributing of goods to help those around us but with the supporting help of communities and us as individuals we are able to reinforce this idea to help create a stronger more equal society. As individuals we are able to strengthen these ideas through things such as participating in charity works that are being held and giving a helping hand to those around us but a key form of difference we are able to make is mainly by educating those around us about the social justice issues that surround us daily.
We are privileged to have our own Ronald McDonald House here in Omaha, located at 620 South 38th Avenue in the downtown area. In 2013, the Omaha Ronald McDonald House recycled around 35 million pop tabs donated by local schools, businesses, organizations, and families. Additionally, the chapter holds various fundraisers throughout the year, open to public participation. Some of this year’s upcoming events are the Omaha Golf Classic at Shadow Ridge Country Club, the Kids and Clays Shooting Sports Tournament in Brainard, Nebraska, the vinNebraska Wine Event, and the Wings and Wheels Auto and Air Show. If you would like to volunteer or learn more about Ronald McDonald House Charities or the Omaha chapter, visit www.rmhcomaha.org or www.rmhc.org .
Car, van, truck, boat, trailer and aircraft donations help to support non-profit charities that provide funding for research, outreach programs, disaster relief, and numerous other humanitarian efforts. In addition to supplying food vouchers for needy people and receiving hotel vouchers, vacation vouchers and other gifts, your car donation might qualify as a tax deduction.
“Americans are harder working and more productive than ever, yet the rewards of that productivity flow into the pockets of fewer and fewer people (Ketteler, 2006).” This relates to the previous articles in that the wealth are becoming wealthier, while the poor are becoming poorer, and this is something that goes against everything the common good stands for and the teachings of the church for so many years. As we can see over and over again, people become greedy and selfish and only do what is in their best interest, and this goes against the teachings and the actions of Jesus Christ. Father Ketteler writes that Jesus chose the poverty life, to be close to those who are in need most. “Jesus lived out a preferential option in standing on the side of those most in need, physically and spiritually (Ketteler, 2006).” Father Ketteler finishes with saying that when we love one another, nobody is a burden and everything that is produced is shared equally among all men and women, “civilizations of love abandons a mentality in which the poor as individuals and as peoples are considered a burden, as irksome intruders trying to consume what others have produced (Ketteler,
Hence, as a Christian adherent, it is essential they follow the words of the Lord and express their faith in the correct manner. Individuals can do this by following the steps of Paul of Tarsus, in his attempt to spread Christianity worldwide, abide by the ethical teachings set by the church such as euthanasia and participate in Saturday/Sunday Worship.
“Look down and see the beggars at your feet. Look down and show some mercy if you can.
Finally, the last book of the Bible inspires hope in the lives of the worshipping church. It depicts they day when God and the Church will be united forever and face-to-face. No longer will there be a temple to go and meet God, because God himself will be the temple (Revelation 21:22). The hope for ultimate intimacy with God forever drives the focus and vision of the church to worship in the meantime. Through good or bad, easy or difficult, success or failure, pleasure or pain… the reality of intimate worship with God for eternity gives strength and eager expectation of the New Earth to come.
