Generating Response in film Bound
The film I have chosen is a crime thriller called 'Bound'. Mafia moll,
Violet, finds herself attracted to a female ex-con, Corky. Together
they attempt to steal $2 million from Violet's boyfriend, Ceasar. It
brings about the question of who can trust who throughout the film.
Although it is a crime thriller it also has gangster undertones. I
will discuss cause and effect, other films of the same genre, the
characters, the settings, if there is equilibrium and any possible
theorists.
The Wachowski brothers who created 'Bound' are also responsible for
'The Matrix' which I think bares no resemblance to their debut 'Bound'
in regards to genre. However the visual aesthetics that appear in each
film which are appreciated by both audiences are apparent.
I believe this film to be suitable for its narrative and genre,
although a website reviewing the film stated It's not the narrative as
much as how the film looks that keeps Bound's spectators rapt.
I have chosen two short scenes in which I will analyse the genre and
narrative. The first scene is about 15 minutes into the film. Ceasar
intrudes on Corky and Violet, and believes it to be Violet having an
affair with another man. Once he sees Corky is female his suspicions
are destroyed.
The mise-en-scene allows the audience insight into the characters and
what kind of film it is. There are certain things typical of a
mafia/gangster movie. Ceasar is well presented in a suit and welcomes
Corky to 'the family'; his accent is also reminiscent of the
characters in 'The Godfather'.
We find out that Ceasar is used to having people who are ex-con's

and narrative as they both have an effect throughout the film. However
I have found it hard to specify the film to just one genre. I have
been able to realise that this film does follow many of the classic
codes of convention through writing about theorists.
The aesthetic values of this film allow the whole 'gangster/moll'
theme to become apparent, the plan for the theft of the money I feel
is the only thing that makes this film a crime thriller. This film is
hard to relate to any other film as there are two sub-genres.
I feel that after the two scenes I have analysed the audiences
reaction is one of suspense, and the people viewing this film are
possibly more able to relate this film to those of a gangster genre
through the speech and locations as well as a crime thriller.
isn’t one with a lot of action, or tragedy it is all very subtle, as
down to the era it was filmed in and the way I can relate to it.
The period of American cinema between 1965 and 1975 produced many films that almost completely restructured classical Hollywood’s accepted genre conventions. A fine example of this would be Robert Altman's iconoclastic take on Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe in The Long Goodbye (1973), a detective film based on the final book in Chandler’s Philip Marlowe series. Altman, who is known for turning around traditional genre conventions, revises and reinvents the film-noir style made popular by Dick Powell in Murder, My Sweet (1944), Humphrey Bogart in The Big Sleep (1946), and Robert Montgomery in Lady in the Lake (1947). The actors and the films in the 1940’s film-noir period conformed to genre conventions, and it wasn’t until Robert Altman directed Elliot Gould’s Philip Marlowe in The Long Goodbye that the detective genre had changed.
When deciding what movie to do for this particular paper I faced a few issues. I knew what the requirements were, but I wanted something different and something I could have fun watching and writing as well. So, after looking around and pondering movies for weeks I finally decided on a perfect choice The 60’s directed by Mark Piznarski?
In Hollywood today, most films can be categorized according to the genre system. There are action films, horror flicks, Westerns, comedies and the likes. On a broader scope, films are often separated into two categories: Hollywood films, and independent or foreign ‘art house’ films. Yet, this outlook, albeit superficial, was how many viewed films. Celebrity-packed blockbusters filled with action and drama, with the use of seamless top-of-the-line digital editing and special effects were considered ‘Hollywood films’. Films where unconventional themes like existentialism or paranoia, often with excessive violence or sex or a combination of both, with obvious attempts to displace its audiences from the film were often attributed with the generic label of ‘foreign’ or ‘art house’ cinema.
Defining a film genre is in some ways difficult and simplistic. Every genre has stated what would define its boundaries. The difficult part is finding one that is solidified by the movies in the genre. The stated definition that this paper will digest and regurgitate is that a Western is a film which is set in the American frontier west. The typical time setting is somewhere in the mid to late 19th century and early 20th century(Dirks, 1). They glorify the past-fading values and aspirations of the mythical by-gone age of the American West(Dirks, 1). Over time, however, Westerns have been redefined, re-invented and expanded, dismissed, re-discovered, and spoofed. This actually makes the definition more lucid, making other films flexible enough to fit quite nicely into the genre.
The film I picked is "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly." I first saw this movie about five years ago while a senior in high school. I loved the movie, but now after watching it I took a closer look at the stereotypes and generalizations that are being depicted in various ways like language, names, landscapes and people. I picked this film because the movie is famous and very well known by Italians, Americans, and Hispanics, and not just famous in America Hollywood (and because I had list of required films I had to pick from). While watching the movie my second time around I tried and focus on the location where the movie takes place in order to demonstrate how lands of Mexico, New Mexico and Texas generalized. I also placed attention to the names the characters are given. There is a term used in Hollywood called little man wins' but after watching The Good, The Bad and The Ugly one observe how this cliché is not used.
Film scholars around the world agree that all genres of film are part of the “genre cycle”. This cycle contains four different stages that a specific genre goes through. These stages are: primitive, classic, revisionist, and parody. Each stage that the genre goes through brings something different to that genre’s meaning and what the audience expects. I believe that looking at the horror genre will be the most beneficial since it has clearly gone through each stage.
Specifically careful examination of events in the years leading up to the film’s release, in combination with its characteristics and tones and the comparisons

A genre is a type or category of film (or other work of art) that can be easily identified by specific elements of its plot, setting, mise en scène, character types, or style. (Goodykoontz, 2014) The gangster film is a sub-genre of the broader genre of crime film. A genre main objective is to classify the depiction of entertainment. The genre of my movie is a gangster film. My movie I chose was Scarface. Directed by Brian De Palma. An update of the 1932 film, Scarface (1983) follows gangster Tony Montana and his close friend Manny Ray from their trip on the Cuban Boat Lift for refugees to their arrival in Miami.
