It was a Monday morning and the topic of everyone's conversation was the past weekend. Usually explaining how drunk they were and the uncontrollable mishaps that we didn't even remember until the next day. For example, they tell their friends "Man, I was soooo wasted last night, I must have drank like 10 beers and like half a bottle of vodka", all told with smile of excitement hoping to do it again the next weekend. This regular occurrence got me thinking, why do we brag ourselves and praise others for accomplishing something that requires absolutely no skill? In short, why do we get drunk? I feel that some people drink in order to knock down or at least lower the wall of insecurities they have built up inside them even for just an instant. For example, my friend Mike attempts to be "...
"The total annual mortality rates due to alcohol-related accidents and health issues are close to 35,000” (“Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse"). This fact explains how many problems come along with alcohol abuse, and tell about health issues and accidents that could be caused by alcohol. Alcohol can be very dangerous and threaten the lives of people even if they are not the one consuming alcohol. Wrecks often happen and kill innocent people as a result of people drinking and driving. There are many alcohol related deaths in the world today whether it is because of drunk driving, or just because someone drank too much and destroyed their liver. Many people think these problems are problems that could easily be avoided if people did not use drinking as a way out of the things in life that are hard. Many people do not realize what they might do when they are drunk, or what it could effect in their life. There is no definite cause of Alcohol Abuse or Alcoholism, though there are many reasons as to why people may drink. Alcohol Abuse can ruin lives, goals, families and many other things for a persons life. Many people do think that when you are of age, alcohol is alright to drink here and there, but many think the hard core liquor should have a limit. Alcohol is not just fun and games or just getting together with friends to "have a few drinks." Having a few drinks can turn into a lot more than fun. Drinking can turn into many other things and could be very bad. Alcohol Abuse is a very big deal, and plays a role in the daily lives of many people. Alcohol Abuse can cause fights in families or with other people, and could ruin a relationship or burn that trust you may have had with someone. Alcohol is abused for many reasons, one of those r...
Many of us, especially during those days in college have woken up with a pounding headache, dry throat and bleary eyes wondering how we got to this point. However, very few of us wonder why we drank so much when most of us are smart enough to know the consequences of heavy drinking. In the book “Getting wasted: why college students drink too much and party so hard”, the sociologist professor from Ohio University examined college drinking culture.
I walked into the house where the "party of the century" was going to be held. I was psyched to be going. At the time I was a little naive freshman invited to my first official high school party at a senior’s house. I was at the party no more than 30 minutes when this boy offered me a drink. Thinking nothing of it, I agreed. He brought back a half-filled cup.
anyone who drinks alcohol puts their body in serious fault of hurting their body and can be harmful in many ways.
Alcohol is often served at social gatherings and is a normal part of the setting at places such as clubs or bars where people go to hang out with others. Many people believe that alcohol can give an individual social confidence and promotes relaxation in the company of others. People enjoy the psychoactive effects of alcohol for various reasons. It provides a sense of relief and disassociation from reality. A sense of adventure or perhaps a spiritual search is often given as the causative reason for alcohol consumption “(Why people drink).” Most of the reasons for alcohol use are because of peer pressure. Many adolescents and college students find themselves in situations where alcohol is present. Because younger people often lack self-confidence or the refusal skills to handle the pressures of such situations, they often begin to experiment with alcohol because they want to fit in and not made fun of so they take the challenge of drinking
The clutches that alcohol has on those dependent on it can make quitting from it very difficult and, at times, almost impossible. Some people are able to have one or two drinks and stop, and then there are those that do not know when to stop or who must drink on a regular basis. It is common for people to drink at social functions or with meals, but getting together with friends or family does not mean that alcoholic drinks need to be served to have a good time. When someone used to drink one or two drinks and be able to stop, now that same person has to have alcoholic drinks earlier in the day and more frequently than usual, he or she would be considered an alcoholic. Anyone drinking what seems to be excessive at first, but seeming to be happy and in control would discourage others to persuade the individual to stop drinking.
. There are many reasons why people start consuming alcohol, such as to increase self-confidence, escape from personal problems, relieve stress, overcome a poor self-image or to overcome shyness. Alcohol is defined as the use of alcohol interfering with social, academic, physical, or economic functioning. There are many stages on how alcohol affects a person. The first stage of alcoholism involves the use of alcoholism as a way to deal with other problems. The abuser will drink more than the average amount and is usually preoccupied with for example, partying or going out socially to drink. The abuser will also drink to cope with personal problems, have trouble stopping after one drink, and they’ll feel guilty about drinking so much. The drinker
Drinking alcohol in some limit may be considered as normal behavior. However, since drinking quarter of whiskey clearly effects brain and bodily functions, we can say this behavior is abnormal. Possible diagnoses would be substance use disorders. One can be drunk after he or she got divorced, however this is not a sign of mental disorder. However, it is clear that my uncle suffers from every day drinking habit.
Overall drinking alcohol is definitely not the wisest decision to take. Alcoholism is a very serious condition that can only be treated with consistent care and determination. Today around 18 million Americans suffer from alcoholism or alcohol abuse. Many die from alcohol abuse or kill someone else in the process. Drink responsibly. (www.nlm.nih.gov 1)
Why do people start to drink? There can be many causes. Some people began drinking alcohol because of psychological pressures such as stress or depression when they were disappointed about something or having big personal problems. Alcoholics believe they can make life bearable only by drinking. A person also can become an alcoholic while using alcohol during holidays, parties, or relaxing. From this can begin alcoholism, because some people are weak and can't resist the temptation to drink more and more. These causes lead to the human's dissolution, occupational injuries, and degradation of personality. Here in Lithuania every day we can see such people, who drink all through the weeks and even months. Such people are a shame to society, so to escape this there has to be found a solution of how to stop this bad habit.
Drinking can have a lot of bad effects. It can go from getting arrested to ruining your life. It has broken many families up form alcohol abuse. I have personally seen it happen to several.
Let’s ask a question: why do people start using alcohol at the first place? And why they start doing it at such young age? Well, just “like other adult drinkers, college students expect alcohol to produce a series of positive effects – relaxation, socialization, sexuality – and the strength of these positive expectancies is related to drinking” (Walters & Baer, 2006). And who wouldn’t take a couple drinks to gain a group of friends? It lowers social inhibitions, so it is very well known among shy individuals as well. However, this activity can be also pressurized by peers. In this case, pressure wouldn’t be effective on people who do not accept or see positive aspects of occasional drinking. That means, everyone starts by saying ‘yes’ to a glass.
"Because time and amount of drinking are uncontrollable, the alcoholics is likely to engage in such behaviors as [1] breaking family commitments, both major and minor; [2] spending more money than planned; [3] drinking while intoxicated and getting arrested; [4] making inappropriate remarks to friends, family, and co-workers; [5] arguing, fighting and other anti-social actions. The alcoholic would probably neither do such things, nor approve of them in others unless he was drinking" (Johnson 203).
Alcohol has been in the world for many centuries and has become a pain but also somewhat of a solution to society. It can be viewed as something to be a social gathering that brings friends together or it can be taking as destruction to someone. Over the years alcohol has played many roles in the world but it plays an even bigger role in substance abuse. Doctors have made several points that it is okay to have a drink every now and again but people need to realize when one drink has become too many. The ideal of having a drink with friends or going out and having an occasional drink is acceptable; However, is it still acceptable when a person find their selves having a drink first thing in the morning or runs to a drink to solve their people.
..., cancer, liver and pancreas disease etc. There are many factors why do people drink, such as: make friends, forget problems, to feel happy, to relax, to feel less anxious, to feel confident and the genes, in my opinion play the key role in this problem. Some people don’t realize that this is a big deal, the big problem until it’s late. Once someone tried alcohol and become dependent it is hard to realize that person needs help to stop it. Also drinking alcohol is closely linked with use of other drugs, legal and illegal. Smoking, drinking and drug taking often co-exist. I chose this article to review because I think it has good examples to show people what causes alcohol dependence and what conditions one can get if drinking alcohol often. People need to remember that we live ones and it is important to keep ourselves healthy and none of bad habits worth our life.
