Preventing Racial Profiling Within the Police Force

Racial equality is an illusion. In the criminal justice system, African Americans and other minorities are targeted by police officers because of the color of their skin. Minorities face many obstacles to reach their freedom, even though laws states everyone should be treated equal. Minorities are more likely to be stopped at traffic stops, due to the color of their skin. In “Racial Profiling”, Jost states that minorities, including President Barack Obama and Oprah Winfrey, feel profiled and judged based on the color of their skin while at traffic stops (1). All races have the right to be protected by officers, however African Americans and other minorities are more likely to be arrested because of their race. Police officers show no intent of protecting minorities, but instead they have been removing them from the streets. Many police officers rely on stereotypes and assumptions when targeting a suspect, and they use the assumptions when giving minorities their punishment. To police officers, minorities are dangerous, and a threat to society. Some Police officers believe that racial profiling is part of the job, however all Americans should be treated equally, and with respect. In order to prevent racial discrimination in the criminal justice system and ensure equality in the treatment of all people, officials must enforce the same policies and guidelines regardless of race.

In order to eliminate racial discrimination in the criminal justice system, officials must enforce strict policies and guidelines stating all races should be treated equally. To African Americans and other minorities racial equality in the criminal justice system is a fantasy. They have to dodge obstacles involving their freedom on a daily basis, from government officials. All races have the right to be protected by police officers, however this is not the case. Officers use assumptions and violence when dealing with African Americans and other minorities. In order to prevent racial discrimination, police officers and government officials must enforce the same policies for people of all races.
