The prejudices that students held against each other were so strong that they were not only hurting each other, but their own education and growth as individuals. “Don't let the actions of a few determine the way you feel about an entire group,” was said by Gruwell to make her students reflect on their prejudices towards each other. The Power of an Author Authors have the ability justify the worst actions. Authors have a way of romanticizing certain situations in order to convey a specific message. A good author has power to influence the reader into believing whatever it is the author wants. When it comes to the story of Hannah Dustan, authors such as John Greenleaf Whittier have romanticized her captivity story along with the actions she took throughout her journey. Introducing a character that will be seen in the story is one of the most vital parts when creating a piece of literature.

Jamal has been transformed by Forrester, before they met, Jamal was a good writer, but his imprvment was so drastic that he was accused of plagerism. Jamals transformation, obviously took effort on his end, but it also required the help of Forrester. Forrester helping Jamal in his growth was only possible becaues Jamal allowed himself to rely on Forrester as a mentor. This is an example of how external forces shaped Jamal into who he is by the end of the film. The external foce here being Forrester, who guides Jamal through his literary experience and his transition into a prestigious school. In Finding Forrester, Jamal and Forrester don’t interact in a strict student- mentor relationship, Jamal and Forrester form a friendship that alters the way that Forrester views life. Forrester relies on Jamal for companionship, this transforms his enire world. This is reflected in his actions. “Of course, the dramatic trade off here is that Forrester helps the boy deal with the academic world, while Jamal brings Forrester back into the world of reality which the author rejected decades before.” (Clinton,

Both Erin Gruwell in Freedom Writers and Jamie Esclante in Stand and Deliver faced students stuck in low-income backgrounds and neighborhoods of crime. Despite the low achievement of these students, both teachers were able to foster a mastery of a subject to their students. Even though the subjects of English and math are extremely different, one method united both teachers and allowed them to teach their students effectively— trust. Erin and Jamie were successful because of the trust they put in their students.
In this day and age, writing is being portrayed through various mediums, such as film and television. Some of those portrayals depict writing as both good and bad depending on the situation that is present. Authors such as, by E. Shelley Reid, Kevin Roozen, and Anne Lamott all write about important writing concepts that are being depicted in films, like Freedom Writers. The film Freedom Writers shows a positive and accurate portrayal of writing in the sense that the writers should have a connection to what they are writing about, writing is a form of communication, and that writing does not have to be perfect the first time.
The author states that the goal of his book is three-fold. The primary two are; that it would be a time-saver for instructors who have difficulty dealing with the common writing problems of their students, and that it would help to alleviate students anxiety about writing by clarifying points that many instructors presume their pupils all know. He does this by setting down guidelines for approaching writing, doing pertinent research, and conveying it, along with analysis, in the medium of stylistic film essays. He provides an abundance of examples of structures, styles, and terms used in this area of writ. The guidelines I found to be extremely useful, for they pertain not just to writing about film, but to any sort of analytical writing. They helped me realize the qualities that my own writing lacks, and I must come to master if I am to articulately present my own subjective experience on paper.
It is a sense of escapism from the standard nine to five occupation or school day. However, lines spoken by an actors’ voice aren’t just words and sounds put together to pass time, but there are real people behind the keyboard of every script. These words crafted on paper symbolize the lives we live and the smallest details exude the emotions we go through as humans. A piece of dialogue isn’t just placed with a thunderstorm in the background to randomly change the look of a setting, but it’s a metaphor for devastation and heartbreak. It is a way to visualize how one may feel inside and can’t always be expressed orally. Writing is a captivating experience because I have the power to express the inexpressible and the ability to enrich the textures and colors of our
‘The Source of Bad Writing’ is a piece that starts and ends in the perfect ways to immediately grab the reader’s attention. It is perfectly accessible to the readers or the audience, and the blunt and straightforward mannerisms of Steven Pinker’s writing appeal to the readers’ humour. The reason why the matters Pinker writes about is accessible is because High School is the one experience that everybody has had. Using this as an explanatory device, Pinker manages to successfully make his writing vibrant and fun to read. Pinker also makes big and bold statements in a very subtle manner. He casually uses words of criticism like “gibberish” and “demonise” without the slightest effort. The piece is also never dragging and Pinker manages to express
Going to War The arrival of winter is well on its way. Colorful leaves had turned to brown and fallen from the branches of the trees. The sky opened to a new brightness with the disappearance of the leaves. As John drove down the country road, he was much more aware of all his surroundings.
When reading two books, it is easy to compare and contrast the many differences between them. Whether you focus on the purposes, themes, impacts, or even just the general content, it’s not hard to spot how writers and topics and novels and novellas differ from each other. In example, take Les Misérables and Of Mice and Men. Les Misérables focuses on a convict, Jean Valjean, and his struggle to be an honest man and make up for past mistakes and wrongdoings. Of Mice and Men focuses on two brothers, George and Lenny, and their struggle to make a living in hard times while one of them is at a permanent disadvantage. Both have some similar pieces and nuances, but this essay will focus on three topics in specific. It will focus on the purpose(s)/intent(s), theme(s), and the impact they had on upcoming writers in their respective times.
I feel as though this class has helped me become a more polished and professional writer. When I first entered English 110, I was extremely unsure and lacked confidence in my writing. I believe that this point can be partly attributed to the fact that I had always had my instructors holding my hand and helping me through the writing process in high school. My senior English teacher always reminded us that college would be much more challenging than her class was and then she would go on to tell us stories of professors who gave out zeros for tiny oversights within a paper. This combined with general apprehension about college life left me terrified. I had always been a strong writer in high school; I know how to form an argument and support
The definition of prolific is to produce something with abundance or high frequency. Prolific writing for experts, who could be authors, novelists, ghostwriters, etc…, would be to produce a large quantity of writing in a short time. Some novelists are capable of writing a book in a month or just a week. In the classroom prolificacy would be writing often, no matter the length of each work. For students, most writing is for practicing the different types of writing. Prolific writing should not be frowned upon in publishing or classrooms.
Before the difference between fact and fiction can be deciphered, it is first necessary to establish the definition of the term literature itself and more specifically English literature. "Literature refers to any composition in the English language including the ones that have been composed in English by writers who are not necessarily from England. For instance, Robert Burns was Scottish, James Joyce was Irish, and Edgar Allan Poe was American, and Vladimir Nabokov was Russian. Hence, English literature is as diverse as the dialects and varieties of the English that is spoken by people around the world and these writers all have their own styles when they create works of fiction or fact." (English literature). "The term fiction comes from the Latin word fingo or fictum meaning to form or create. Hence, fiction is something that has been created by the writer and is purely based on the writer’s imagination. It is sometimes possible for works of fiction to include real people, events, or places. The primary purpose of fiction is entertainment and the capability to create fiction, either in the form of books, film, theatre, radio, or television, is considered to be an age old aspect of human culture as well as one of the defining characteristics of humanity."(Fiction) Fact, or non-fiction, is the opposite of fiction and hence is a narrative that is based on reality and is not the product of the writer’s imagination. "Non-fiction writing is the one that is seen in newspaper stories, personal accounts, autobiographies, biographies, editorials, journal articles, legal documents, and textbooks. Writings in recent years have often witnessed a blurring of the line between fiction and non-fiction as novelists or the writers of fi...
