Working out is guaranteed to result in healthful advantages, right? Right! PiYo is a different form of exercise that involves health benefits to the body. It incorporates the mind and body practices of yoga and Pilates, and as a result produces an athletic workout that syndicates the aspects of sports stretching, strength training, conditioning and movement. It is designed to improve a participant’s fitness level while also challenging their level of ability as the exercise progresses (Powder Blue Productions), while also providing a relaxing atmosphere. However, aside from the traditional forms of meditation and relaxation, it neglects to involve spiritual chants, meditation, or Sanskrit terminology that is traditionally expressed through various exercises, such as yoga. PiYo, along with its various components, is what allows the body to explore a relaxing environment that focuses on flexibility, core and muscle strength, and health benefits regarding the components of yoga and Pilates.
Yoga was originally practiced to meditate, pray, heal and restore energy nearly five thousand years ago in India. It was typically practiced by Hindu monks of the Hindu religion. They practiced forms that consisted of physical posture, chanting, meditation, and spirituality (Powder Blue Productions). Yoga, as a way to achieve higher self-awareness, was around as early as 200 B.C. in India and has been gradually growing in popularity in the western world over the past four decades. Traditional styles of yoga, including Hatha yoga, which consists of thousands of poses, have long been studied as an effective form of complimentary or alternative medicine (CAM).
Pilates refers to a system of physical fitness that was established in the early 20th century. It was developed by Joseph Pilates. Joe was a German born in the year 1880. He suffered from rickets, rheumatic fever, and asthma during his childhood years. Because of the continuous suffering brought by the foregoing conditions, Joe was very week and he always felt vulnerable in a rough realm. This situation inspired him to embark on an enduring pursuit in a bid to gain health and the much needed strength.
Yoga is a discipline both involving physical and mental control that originated in India. The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word, "yug", meaning union and it means the joining of the individual spirit with the universal spirit. The type of yoga known as Hatha Yoga, ("Ha"- sun, "tha"-moon) is what is most commonly practiced and this yoga involves the path of the mind and body and is the most physical. There are eight limbs or steps of Hatha Yoga, the first step being the five Yamas. There are five yamas and these concern your behavior to the world.
Yoga is a physical and mental practice as well as a philosophy that began in India about 5,000 years ago (Lee, 2014). There are many types of yoga practice and over 15 million people in American practice yoga at least once a month (Statistic Brain, 2016). Yoga has grown to over a $6 billion industry (Girard, 2013). Bikram yoga is a specific routine of postures originally created by Bishnu Charan Ghosh and then modified by Bikram Choudury in Calcutta, India in the 1950’s. Today Bikram yoga is practiced in a room heated between 35-42 degrees Celsius or 95-108 degrees Fahrenheit with humidity of 40%. Bikram yoga is a series of 26 postures and two breathing exercises done over 90 minutes in exactly the same order each time.
Yoga is the practice of active stretching and also involves the art of meditation. No one knows when this practice started, but it predates written history. Various stone carvings have been found in archeological sites in the Indus Valley depicting figures in Yoga positions. These carvings are thought to be dating back to at least 5,000 years or more. The most common mistake people make is associating Hinduism with Yoga; Yoga, however, came along way before Hinduism evolved into a religion and incorporated the practices and ideas of Yoga into its religion. Yoga as a tradition has always been passed down from teacher to student through word of mouth and practical demonstration. Therefore, the practice of Yoga and its techniques are based solely on the combined experiences of individual spanning over thousands of years. One of the earliest documents about Yoga was written by a scholar named Patanjali; He established the most widely recognized theories and practices used in Yoga called Yoga Sutras dating between the 1st or 2nd century BC or as late as the 5th century AD.
