Once upon a time, there was a boy named Povero. He was very poor. He was so poor he could barely afford food and drink for him and his two brothers. His mother and father died of the plague not very long ago, and being the oldest, he was left with all of the responsibility. He was only able to read and write, for he had only gone to school for one year. He homeschooled his brothers to the best of his ability, and tried his best to watch them, as they were very rambunctious and always getting into trouble. But this did not put down Povero. Even though he was poverty-stricken and had about the worst of luck, Povero was always kind and greeted everyone with a smile, even if they didn’t. Everyone counted on Povero for a cheerful compliment anytime they needed it.
However, there was one boy in the village who hated Povero. His name was Ricco. He was not wealthy as well, but he was always mean. Everything was always someone else’s fault. He would make himself feel better by making others feel worse about themselves. He would beat up children anywhere he went, and he would always complain about everything. He would tease and nag adults and children. He didn’t care who he hurt, he just needed to hurt someone. Yet everyone tolerated him, and some children were even his friends.
One day Povero was hanging his clothes on the line when a small bird fell from the sky and into the woods near his shack. He ran to the woods to find the small bird lying on its back with a broken wing. He carefully picked up the bird and carried him to the back of his house. He set him down on the cleanest blanket he could find. He tended the bird’s broken wing well, and after a week, the bird was ready to fly again. Before he left, the bird told Povero that if he ...

So together Povero and Arabella travelled day in and day out, but couldn’t find anything. “When are we going to get to a town?” Arabella cried.
“Just what are you doing here?”
The pair turned to find a soldier standing behind them. The crest on his armor was unfamiliar to Povero and Arabella, so they assumed that he was not from Cendari.
“Sorry, brave knight!” Povero said, “We are runaways from another kingdom. May we stay in yours?”
“Well, I don’t think the king will be happy if you live in the palace, but would you mind a decent house in the town?”
“That would be splendid!” Arabella exclaimed.
“Well then, follow me to the kingdom.”
So the threesome travelled to the faraway kingdom of Berikoth and lived in a commoner house. No one ever came for either of them, and they were happy about that. They enjoyed a normal life and lived happily ever after.
He tried and tried and was just so happy that he could do it and it was time for Doodle to learn how to walk, run swim and do things like a normal kid,but when ever he was younger, he had a problem with his heart and which caused him not to do normal things because he wasn’t normal. It was all his brothers fault that he had died because it all started in the morning whenever they were eating at the table with his mom,dad and brother and auntie. Whenever they had seen a big bird outside on their tree.Doodle had told his parent’s that it was outside and the bird had fallen over and died so his father had told him to go get the bird book and once he got it he looked the bird and found out it was scarlet ibis and it came from the south.Doodle had buried the bird and hadn’t ate anything.Doodle was amazed at how big the bird was because of the size of it so he had dug a hole for it and threw it in their and buried
A couple of my teammates accompanied me and we drove to Lyari. We had to park our car outside as the roads in the city were too small for a car. As we entered the city we noticed that people lived in small homes. Homes with thatched roofs and walls made of manure and sticks. Generally, majority of the town was uneducated, without proper shelter, no electricity, no vehicles and no access to clean water. It was so moving to see how these people had so little in material things and yet they seemed to be at so much peace with their life burdens. There were young children everywhere either completely naked or just in their underwear but what stood out the most were the smiles on their faces while playing in the same dirty water used for washing clothes and showering themselves. They were completely incognizant to what was going on around them. Such an environment made us realize that all we care about in life is having fun, while those in other countries are just trying to stay alive. Me and my friends gave the little children some money and gave our jackets and shoes to those children. The young poor children considered our donation as a great act of kindness and would never forget this day. We never realize how simple things to us could mean the world to other children less fortunate. Poverty to us is when our parents are not able to buy us the latest shoes and clothes in
Three years after their arrival in the country the families receive notice that one of the lost boats has returned to port. The father leaves to the city to see if anything could be rescued and before leaving asks his daughters if there was anything they wished from the city for him to bring back. The older daughters make silly request but Beauty asks for rose seeds to plant a rose garden around the house. Upon returning home, the father is caught in a blizzard and stumbles upon a welcoming enchanted castle.
“The Singer Solution to World Poverty” by Peter Singer is a persuasive article trying to influence people to donate money to save children’s lives. Peter Singer stated, “Evolutionary psychologists tell us that human nature just isn’t sufficiently altruistic to make it plausible that many people will sacrifice so much for strangers… they would be wrong to draw moral conclusions to that fact”. First, Singer tells a story about a retired school teacher who doesn’t have extra money. Dora, the school teacher, is given a chance to make a thousand dollars by walking a homeless child to a house, in which she was given the address for. She then walks the child to the house, and then later Dora’s neighbors tell her that the child was probably killed
In a short story called, “Thank you ma’am”, the author is trying to convey the theme, or message, of the importance of showing random acts of kindness towards others to help institute change. Mrs.J show one act of kindness when she washes his face. Another when she makes Roger food at her house. Mrs.J is kind and shows multiple examples throughout the story.
Jenny asked, “On the first picture what do you see?” Jacob replies, “I see a bird who wants to learn to fly. The bird then draws pictures so he can figure out ways to fly. This picture the bird has the fan so he can learn how to fly; the wind is pushing him, and he can stay in one place and learn. Now he has the air glider thing that way he could also fly different ways and then once he can do that he can fly. Now he has a rocket booster so he can learn how to fly fast, and now he has crashed in all of them. The birds that can fly are laughing at him, and it makes him sad. Then I ask do you think he will give up? Jacob replies, “No since he does not care what others think and now he is trying to make a new machine so he can fly. He made an airplane so now he can fly, and the others will not laugh at him. The bird is happy at first he was sad now he is happy. Jenny asked, “Why do you think he did not give up?” Jacob replies, “He knew he could not fly so he built machines so that he could
...a fresh positive mind which helps them to survive. The boy is young and it’s hard for any child his age to understand the reality of life in certain situations that is why the man consistently attempts to help the boy understand what they are going through and what it is going to take to survive.
Each day in America people face new challenges weather big or small. The normal everyday challenges include bills, tight schedules, disagreements, and the unforeseen trials that may arise. It is possible for the average person to have a good day or a few good days while feeling worry free. A person who is considered a part of the working poor may never feel worry free. Their challenges hit them hard each day as they struggle with the issues they’ve most likely dealt with their entire lives. Living in poverty does not afford those citizens the luxury of feeling worry free as if they are just anyone else. Sadness sets in at the realization that children of a family in poverty often times feel the same stress and worry
In today’s society, acts of compassion are rare as we get more and more focused on satisfying our desire for success and wealth. However, humans do sometimes show remarkable acts that melts the hearts of men and women and restore faith in humanity within those who are less optimistic. But it might not always be a kind return that you may get from such action. In the story “Sweat” by Barry Webster, a young girl named Sue allows Jimmy as an act of kindness to lick her “honey” on her body. As a result, Jimmy chokes from the honey and Sue gets more rejected from the other students at her school. By using characterization, dialogue and narration, Webster demonstrates the theme that compassion and kindness can bring more consequences than benefits when these actions are done by those who are different.
Individuals often experience unfortunate sufferings and difficulties through their life; some may continue to persevere and endure these arduous circumstances in hopes of achieving a more desirable, comfortable way of living. While attempting to fulfill their own objectives, individuals may also unexpectedly receive the attention and assistance from others which instigates a change in their previous attitude towards life. In the short story “Divisadero”, Michael Ondaatje suggests that when individuals receive unexpected forms of kindness and understanding from others, they may suddenly realize their own individual potential and capabilities they possess as they aspire to attain greater possibilities and goals. These unforeseen acts of compassion
Throughout A Christmas Carol, we see exemplary examples that generosity is more about the spirit in which something is given than the item itself, from the schoolmaster's offer of food and wine to a young Scrooge and his adoring young sister Fan, or the humble but merry celebration hosted by Mr. Fezziwig and his wife, or even Fred's offer of assistance to a grieving Bob Cratchit in a future that does not come to pass: as Bob says, “Now, it wasn't for the sake of anything he might be able to do for us,so much as for his kind way, that this was quite delightful. It really seemed as if he had known our Tiny Tim, and felt with us." Despite this, the glee exhibited by the family acts as a stark contrast to their circumstances, endorsing the notion that generosity involves more than the giving of money and that the price of giving ones love and kindness cannot be quantified.
“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn life around.” Says Leo Buscaglia; a teacher of special education at the University of Southern California.
“What is that?” Jan asked. Her daughter came flying through the house with something tiny in her hand. The daughter ignored Jan who was sitting at the kitchen table and beelined straight to her husband. “We have to go to the store!” the daughter demanded. While as small argument ensued between her husband and her daughter, Jan strained to see the small object in her daughter’s hand. She was quickly able to determine what it was and let out a shriek of terror. “GET IT OUT!” Jan demanded. “But mom” said the daughter. “NO BUTS!” Jan sharply replied. In her daughters’ hand was a little bird with no feathers.
Our first victim is Peter; a person I went to high school with. Peter is what one would describe as a bum; he is doing nothing with his life and plays video games all day. This short description of Peter’s life is relevant because it’s how he continues this lifestyle of carefree luxury without flack from his parents. His parents held his hand throughout most of life much like Isaiah, the individual I mentioned earlier. All throughout high school Peter was (on average) a D-grade student. The reader may ask who on earth would reward this kid? His parents shower him in gifts and commend him for his below average grades. Peter soon had to go to a different school to receive more credits to graduate; at this point his parents bought him a brand new car in recognition for his
For instance, it was an extremely sunny day in Ghana, West Africa, and I had gone out to the well to fetch water. It was while carrying the bucket of water on my way back that I noticed my neighbor’s children fighting over the insufficient amount of food that they had to share. My family and I were not rich but from what I saw, I knew that we were better off than other people I knew. I carried the bucket of water inside the house and came back outside to call the two youngest children that were fighting over the last grain of food. I shared my food my food with them and though it was not sufficient for all, feeding the younger ones alone was better than not helping any one of them at all. There was only little that I could possibly do but by sharing, I had helped them in a great way, even if it was just for the time being.
