Explain why an understanding of the environmental/external (PESTLE) factors is Important for all organizations
To run a successful business, it is very important to run a background check on the external environment of that particular industry. PESTLE analysis is widely used to investigate the Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal and Environmental influences under expanding businesses. It helps in decision-makings and also to become more aware of competitors move.
Political
Political factors affect companies in all type of industries and can have significant impact if change in government or policies occur. Changes in public spending or closing and opening of major businesses rely immensely on UK’s international relations with other countries. Eg: accession of new members like Poland can bring up new business opportunity and can have similar effects on the EU regulations. Legal changes are closely related to Political changes as Laws are frequently changed in a wide range of areas, Eg:
• Government type and stability
• Freedom of press, rule of law and levels of bureaucracy and corruption
• Regulation and de-regulation trends
• Social and employment legislation
• Tax policy, and trade and tariff controls
Economic
Economic changes are directly related to social changes. Business outcomes are associated with fluctuating economy with a series of general boom and downfalls. All businesses benefit during an economic boom and lose out during downfalls. Other changes in the economy such as changes in the interest rate, wage rates, and the rate of inflation (i.e. general increase in prices) directly affect outcomes of various industries. PESTEL stands for Political: highlights the role of government and how this affects the company strategic choices. Economic: refers to factors such as business cycles and economic growth rates within the country that the company is located. Social: influences the culture of a country and how they change also the demographics. Technological factor appeals more to innovations such as the Internet and new technology. Environmental focuses mainly on green issues such as pollution and waste. Legal focuses mainly on legislative issues such as health safety and environmental issues.
Political factors can have huge implications on a business. This can depend on how stable or instable the degree of policy and government is within the country. For example, a change in government can lead to instability as this would cause uncertainties within the government. The current coalition government would be considered stable in its current position. However some of the policies that the current government are trying to push through, e.g. leaving the EU, would cause big instabilities and could have negative effects on businesses including cross street news and glow warm. This is because if we left the EU it would become more difficult for us to trade as many countries wouldn’t want to do business with us. If this was the case both glow warm and cross street news may find it difficult to find a low costing supplier outside the UK. This would cause both businesses to raise prices in order to cover the new costs. An advantage of having a stable government is the support that they can give to a business. This support can come in the form of many different grants and initiatives to suit any stage of business development. One example of a grant that is back by the government would be green grant.
PESTEL analysis is stated to describe a framework of macro-environmental factor by Gupta (2013). It consists of 6 elements which influence the performance of the organizations: Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Environment, and Legal. Bajcetic and Srdjevic (2012) support that PESTEL analysis is useful in strategic planning process and can illustrate the positive and negative impact to the organization.
