The story in a film is conveyed by the sequence of events. Films convey a story to a viewer differently to a novel. This is done by showing and telling and explained by Gunning (1949). Editing is a very important feature to join one event to another in a film. Film makers take part in a lot of editing as they need to do this for special effects as explained by Gunning (1949). As for example in Harry Potter and the order of Phoenix (2007) there is a wide use of editing. This is evident in the film when the battle is going on near the end between Harry and the evils. Sequence of events are joined together to show what is happening to each of Harry’s friend. Editing is useful in order to show flashback events, this is shown in the film when Harry has a flashback. At one point Harry is lying on the floor and a second after there is a flashback. There is repetition of the flashbacks and then Harry is seen lying on the floor again. This is a narrative device used by films which cant be used by novelist in there novels. However there are certain rules that film-makers have to be considerate about when editing. One of them is the 180 degree rule which is illustrated by Proferes (2008). He said that the 180 degree rule makes sure that the there is a consistent screen direction between a character and an object within the established space. This makes it possible for the story to continue in a film, certain scenes are established through this rule and helps the film maker to create scenes which don’t confuse the viewers. L cut image and L cut audio is another way of editing a film which is able to cut certain parts of the film without the realization of it by the viewer. Most of the time this type of edit is done when the film is showing s...

...low angle shot when the camera is on Lord Voldemort as he is the powerful one at that point and Harry is made to look small.
These lines of the story are explained through the use of fricative language whereas in the film. The use of diestic and non diestic sounds illustrate the fear of Harry. Symbols such as sweat and facial expressions are used to show how scared he is and that he is having a bad dream. The story is explained through visual information in just a few minutes.
Overall I think that a film is a much better way to narrate a story as it shows the important parts of the story through visual information. However novels are a much complex form of telling a story. It goes in a lot detail, sometimes with unnecessary information. The narrative devices used by both the film and the novel is effective to suite each type as many people still today read books.
The scene in which Margot gets attacked, clever lighting effects are effectively employed by Alfred Hitchcock, to build up the anticipation of the audience and add-on greatly to the element of suspense and thrill present in the scene. It is noticeable how the entire set is dark and only some parts are selectively lit in order to capture audience focus. For example, the scene in which the doorknob turns slowly and the ...
The scene in this film that I chose to do a music analysis of is the scene in which Harry
Whenever books are adapted for film, changes inevitably have to be made. The medium of film offers several advantages and disadvantages over the book: it is not as adept at exploring the inner workings of people - it cannot explore their minds so easily; however, the added visual and audio capabilities of film open whole new areas of the imagination which, in the hands of a competent writer-director, can more than compensate.
This involves contrast of the two language systems: Novels, which uses symbols to portray meaning, and films, which use codes to portray meaning. “The film’s story does not have to be told because it is presented” (29). The cinema is also unable to portray past tense in the ways that novels can. McFarlane also explains in “Stories told and presented” that the film is spatial, contrary to the novel’s linearity, resulting in different ways of presentation.
These scenes are always played when Harry comes into contact with a person he has used as a basis for his writing. The transition between the real and fictional world are done suddenly and often it is hard to tell which reality the scene is taking place. These scenes are often the scenes which the characters are offended by. The scenes effectively show us Harries imagination and how much influence the people around him have influenced his writing. The scenes have some type of absurdity or present the character in an exaggerated manner. One scene that shows this is the first scene of the movie. When one starts watching Deconstructing Harry he sees a woman exiting a cab and heading towards a house. Then the movie shows a scene from one of the book Harry has written. The transition of the scenes makes the viewer assume that Harry is actually one of the characters he has created. The viewer later learns that this scene is based off of his past experiences with his wife’s sister. These transitions are so sudden to show the importance of the characters Harry has created and how they influence his
The theme first shows itself in Godric Hollow, where Harry Potter and his friend visited his parent’s grave. On the stele, there is a quote on it, “The last enemy shall be destroyed is death”(Rowling 328). This refers to Harry’s parent had conquered Death. When Harry was a child, they sacrificed themselves to save Harry from Lord Voldemort. Their death resembles their undying love to Harry. This showed that love is stronger than death because when Harry’s parents died, their love for Harry never left Harry. This also created a shield between Harry Potter from Lord Voldemort. He couldn’t harm Harry until he used Harry’s blood to get through the barrier.
Many stories and novels are created into films, but it is not easy. Stories often rely heavily on the narrator, but films don’t typically have one. While film gives you direct visuals, books give you the opportunity to make up your own; a film takes away your own visual interpretation. Also, film has certain limits, such as time, interaction with the imagination, and the need to collaborate with certain people. It is common for a book to film adaptation to have the downside of not having all of the details from the story, but it isn't the filmmaker's job to adapt the story word for word, they use their own vision. Sometimes, it is necessary for some things to be changed, maybe to “highlight new themes, emphasize
Harry Potter is a fascinating tale of sorcerers, wands, broomsticks, dragons, and magic. The story begins with a young boy named Harry Potter who lives at number four Privit Drive, Surray, England. His journey begins after the death of his parents at the hands of the evil Lord Voldemort. Harry learns of his past and his future as a wizard from Hagrid, the keeper of keys and grounds at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He travels to Hogwarts where he learns spells and enchantments, makes new friends, finds enemies, and discovers fantastic secretes. J.K. Rowling weaves a web of impeccable storytelling with this critically acclaimed novel. In the tale of Harry Potter imagery, symbolism, and motif take central focus.
I prefer to read the book because it gave me more imaginations to construct. On the other hand the movie gave us lively and specific scenes. Therefore, both of them have their own advantages.
Rowling effectively creates the images for these crucial events in her fantasy. The imagery used allows the readers to feel as if they are there with Harry as he explores this new world. We, the readers, are able to be fully immersed into the fantasy world the Rowling has created. The feeling of being fully immersed and experiencing these feelings such as fear, anxiousness, excitement, and curiosity helps the read be completely engaged. Thus, creating a more enjoyable
I have always believed that the book is always better than the movie. Even though the visual effects on the movie helps out a lot, the book is always better. The book is just the original thing. This means that it tells the story that it was meant to
Hello, today I will be speaking about a 40 second segment clip I have chosen in the opening scene of Harry Potter and the Deathly hallows Part 2. However, firstly I will give you a short recap up to this point.
First of all, diegetic sounds and ambient sound effects are integral in creating tension and apprehension in the film, as “ …sound plays a critical role in determining how audiences react to images.” (p.234) At the background of the opening shot the audience hears the distant roll of thunder; gradually its sound increases and reaches its maximum, causing fear of impending jeopardy. As the tension escalates, the volume of the sound rises, we hear the roaring of dancers’ drums, and its sound is intentionally exaggerated, the tempo of music speeds up as well as the dance of the indigenous performers of the ritual sacrifice to gods. The alteration of volume and tempo of the sound heightens suspense and makes the audience anticipate with anxiety the forthcoming shots.
At the beginning of the book, the tone was dark and morose. Harry was ready to fight as long as possible to protect his friends. In the middle of the book, the tone was tense and suspenseful. Upon learning the clues left behind by Dumbledore, Harry discovered the Horcruxes and destroyed them one by one. At the end of the book, the tone was calm and grave. Harry realized he had to die to defeat Voldemort. He let Voldemort kill him knowing it would make the Dark Lord mortal again. Harry trusted that the others would finish him off, but Harry came back to life and realized he must do it. He accepted his title as the Chosen One and had the confidence to face down Voldemort and then he won. Tone was used to show his acceptance of his role to defeat
Also, books usually have more characters and give continued suspense so that the reader will be hooked or addicted to finish the book to find out the story. On the other hand, movie producers need to eliminate so many details about the story in order to squeeze everything into one to two hours. Due to this, those people who love detail information about stories usually prefer books than movies as movies does not have a detailed information about the story. Furthermore, reading books can not only enhance the reader’s vocabulary and creativity, but also increase their reading and writing skills, while watching movies only provides entertainment (Lee, wordpress.com).
