Looks can be a very determining factor, and sometimes people's appearances can affect what she or he can or can not do in society and what they do to fit into it. The play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand, is a good example of how this idea is put into play. The main character, Cyrano de Bergerac, is portrayed as a hideous person, because of the size of his nose. As someone who does not fit with in society, yet he changes his morals, attitude, and personality to make up for his grotesque appearance. As the play progresses from act to act we the readers realize that Cyrano is this magnificent character. We begin to understand how his ugliness has shaped his life, how the deformity on his face has forced him to learn new skills and to become a better person. At the beginning of the play, Cyrano is introduced as a brave person, a force to be reckoned with. This can be seen in Act one, Scene four, when Cyrano decides to cancel the play because he had ordered Montfleury off the stage. However when the crowd begins to get angry, Cyrano says "An I issue a collective challenge! Come, I'll write down your names. Skip forward young heroes! You'll all have a turn, I'll give each of you a number. Now who wants to be at the top of the list? You, sir? No? You? No? I'll dispatch the first duelist with all the honors that are his due. All of you who want to die, hold up your hands. Does modesty forbid you to look at my naked sword?" Yet, no one step up to him, at least not at that given moment. They were afraid that Cyrano was going to live up to his word and kill anyone that dared step up. By issuing this challenge Cyrano showed what made him such a magnificent character . He showed his morals, what he believed was right, and how he was ... ... middle of paper ... ...y, or grandeur- no more nose, in short.....", by saying this instead of getting mad Cyrano showed the true purity of his attitude. He showed that he was proud of the way he look, even though his big nose made him an outcast, it also symbolize his superiority to others. Not only that, but he also acknowledges the fact that all his talents come from his horrible appearance , that that's what pushed him to become a better person, to have a better attitude. As the play goes from beginning to end, the reader sees the effects that Cyrano's nose has had on everything from his attitude, to his personality, and morals.The reader begins to make the connection between Cyrano's grotesque appearance and what an amazing character he is. They begin to understand that his ugliness was what pushed him to achieve such a high level of social status. It was what made him great.
Cyrano is a very intelligent, noble, skillful swordsman who is full of knowledge and creativity to allow him to write his writings. Cyrano shows loving character because he delivers a letter to Roxane every day, of his own feelings and helpful when helping Christian and his struggles with Roxane. Cyrano is also brave and ambitious because he is not afraid of any challenge that awaits him.
As the play opens, there is much merrymaking and festivity in preparation for the play. The sheer happiness of all of the colorful characters is transferred to the reader almost instantly. The mood is portrayed very well as being light and bubbly, an overall good feeling. The next major shift comes when Cyrano enters and, after riding himself of Montfleury, puts on the spectacle wherein he demonstrates not only his impeccable verbal dexterity, but also his fencing abilities - and both at the same time. Cyrano De Bergerac has had an enormous, revolting nose ever since birth. Cyrano is an idealist who fights against the harsh reality of ordinary life. He feels that love is based too much by looks and appearance and thinks that no one will ever love him because of his appearance. Because of this, Cyrano alienates himself from society and lives in a world where love exists without appearance. Throughout the book, Rostand uses the motifs platonic love and beauty to highlight the idea that idealism requires nobility, integrity, courage, and self-sacrifice.
Few words can be more humorous, or more upsetting, than a well thought out and witty phrase. The only skill that matches Cyrano’s skill with a sword, is his skill with his tongue. With a wit unmatched by any poet, Cyrano made enemies wherever he went, simply by out-smarting all who came against him. In the first act of the play, Cyrano crashes a performance of the well-known actor Montfluery. After many insults, Cyrano heaps upon them by saying, “I would never venture out in public with a soiled conscience, a tarnished honor, or scruples grimy and dull. I do not adorn myself with gems and ribbons, like you. Instead, I decorate myself with truth, independence, and a clean soul.”

The play consists of more important characters than Christian De Neuvillette, although he is the most admirable. Three admirable qualities that Christian possessed are courtesy, modesty and bravery.
In the play Coriolanus, the man by with the play is named is a complicated individual. There is complexity to his personality, and subtlety to his emotions. In Act III, from III.ii.91 to 139, Coriolanus goes through an extreme shift of point of view and emotion. He has a complete reversal from not wanting compromise with the common people citizens to begrudgingly accepting that he must. For any actor trying to play Coriolanus, the importance of understanding this scene is important to understanding Coriolanus as a whole.
Wilde uses great characters, setting and plot to explain the significance that looks have. Everyone's life could be altered just because of the way someone looks, or even the way they look. Looks can not only be charming and deceitful, but deadly as well.
Franco Zeffirelli portrayed a more effective version of the famous to be or not be soliloquy by having it set below in the family mortuary. Having violently rejected Ophelia, Hamlet climbs down the stoned stairs of the medieval castle and into the cellar where all his ancestors’ burial tombs lie, including his father’s. Surrounding himself in tombs and skeletons, he intones the to be or not to be speech in isolation and darkness. Having this particular set design, Zeffirelli enhanced the scene by creating a cold, dark, and suspenseful atmosphere. The family mortuary set design was eerie and melancholic which added realism into the speech as it allowed the audience to really see the manifestation of death that Hamlet contemplated. It also added physical emotion into the soliloquy as the scene contrasted death and Hamlet so closely with all the dead royals in their tombs, showing how deep Hamlet’s thoughts on life and death were rooted in his mind. Therefore, Zeffirelli’s use of the set design helped to create a more intense scene that enriched the soliloquy.
In William Shakespeare’s play “Twelfth Night” the alleged Puritan Malvolio is the unpopular rigidity, hypocritical and gullible steward made to look a fool by those he has humiliated (Sir Toby, Sir Andrew, Maria, Fabian and Feste) which appeals to the audience. Malvolio is more the victim of his own psychic propensities than he is Maria’s gull, as his own beliefs appear to engineer his downfall. In Suzann Collins trilogy the “Hunger Games” the down to earth “pure” President Snow obtains those exact qualities of Malvolio. He appears to be on the people’s side but we soon learn that he overwhelms himself with power and takes himself down.
How does the use of comic relief best contrast the tragedy of Hamlet? In great works of literature a comic relief is used as contrast to a serious scene to intensify the overall tragic nature of the play or to relieve tension. As illustrated in Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet, intense scenes are joined with character’s banter and vacuous actions as to add a comic relief. In Hamlet, Polonius acts as a comic relief by his dull and windy personality, Hamlet uses his intelligence and his negativity toward the king and queen to create humor, while on the other hand Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are a comic relief by their senseless actions and naïve natures. Polonius, Hamlet, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are all used as a comic relief to increase the ultimate tragic nature of the play.
In 4.3.36 of Cymbeline, Pisano is called in by Cymbeline to tell him of Posthumus’s, Imogen’s and Cloten’s whereabouts. The king desperately wants to know for the queen is sick with fever over Cloten’s disappearance and Cymbeline misses his daughter. Pisano is telling the truth in line 36 when he says he knows of no one’s whereabouts. In this passage there are certain lines that mirror the theme of disguise and fate. Disguise is a huge part of the play, Imogen, Cloten, and Posthumus all disguise themselves in order to achieve some goal. The disguises they choose particularly for Cloten reveals a lot about his character at that moment in the play. So the lines “Wherein I am false, I am honest”, ring true. Written in 1962-3, Play depicts three characters, a man (M), and two women (W1 and W2) trapped in urns with only their heads showing. These characters each present their own version of a love triangle, which once occurred between them. It becomes clear during the play that the characters, once tortured by each other, are now tortured by their situation. A spotlight acts as a "unique inquisitor," compelling each to speak when it shines on them, and to stop when it goes out. As this assault continues, the characters become increasingly maddened by the light, and increasingly desperate to make it stop. The play repeats itself, providing the audience with a sense that these characters have been saying the same words for an eternity, and will continue to do so until the light decides they can stop. Beckett demonstrates how "A style of living, theatrically communicable, is used to express a state of mind."

Society today emphasizes the beauty of one's outer facade. The external appearance of a person is the first thing that is noticed. People should look for a person's inner beauty and love the person for the beauty inside. Beauty, a powerful aspect of life, can draw attention but at the same time it can hide things that one does not want disclosed. Beauty can be used in a variety of ways to affect one's status in culture, politics, and society. Beauty most certainly should not be used to excuse punishment for bad deeds. Beauty is associated with goodness, but that it is not always the case. This story describes how the external attractiveness of a person can influence people's behavior and can corrupt their inner beauty.
In William Shakespeare’s play, “Hamlet”, It is quite evident that Polonius, King Claudius, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are all two faced. The theme of appearance versus reality is shown multiple times in the play through these characters. Polonius, King Claudius, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern all first appear to be honest and sincere. As the play continues, each character’s true self is discovered and in reality they are all evil and
