How would you feel if you were judged on your physical abilities and just because you were not as fast or strong as the other people you got punished for it? This is how certain kids may feel during gym class. Physical education was first influenced in the late 1700s to the mid- 1800s by three nations, Germany, Sweden, and England. German immigrants who supported a strong system of gymnastics training introduced the Turner Societies. They used heavy equipment including a side horse as well as parallel and horizontal bars. The Swedish threw in their part by having a system of exercise promoting health through performance with light equipment such as wands and climbing ropes. The English however brought sports and games to America through physical activities and participation. These three nations influenced sports and physical education foundations in America. We all know the importance of physical activity and health not in just America, but around the world. Having a special class devoted to physical education is a great thing when taught the right way. Physical education should be graded on the students’ effort and improvement in class, not just their physical ability.
While it is true that teachers have to have set scores to grade off of, physical education should be graded on effort and improvements. Not every student is a star athlete. Not every kid can run under a seven-minute mile. Physical education teachers have a set time kids need to reach on the physical fitness tests. It may be that kids have to get less than a seven-minute mile time, or do a certain amount of pull-ups and sit ups to get an A. There are kids out there who may be good at art or singing, but aren’t physically talented. These kids t...

Williams mentions Tug of War, Capture the Flag, and Climb the Rope games, and he proves that the games do not satisfy the criteria for appropriate physical education teaching practices. The author also criticizes the practice of taking attendance while students sit in lines, viewing it as a waste of precious instructional time.

Student athletes live very busy lives. A typical school day runs from 8:00-2:30, add in a two- hour practice or game, score a part time job, dive into some family time, a grand slam of homework and catch a little bit of sleep. Students are more stressed due to the many activities they are a part of. This issue affects a lot of people not only in this school district, but most other high schools throughout the country. All student athletes exercise more than other children who are not involved in an extracurricular sport. In school athletics, the players are called “student athletes” meaning that school activities come first. There are strict rules for student athletes, not only on the field but in the classroom as well. In physical education
The public and private school in the United States remained separated the boys and girls in Physical Education until the passage of Title IX occurred in 1972. (Hannon, J.C., Ratliffe, T.) Due to the Scholars wanted to eliminate the gender inequity and inequitable teaching behaviors in physical education that limited the learning potential of boys and girls so Title IX was enacted. (Dunbar & O’Sullivan, 1986; Griffin, 1984; Treanor, Graber, Housner, & Wiegand, 1998). As a result, most secondary schools changed from single gender classes to coeducational classes in physical education. The physical education classes had become coeducational in nature and the boys and girls could take part in similar activities. (Gabbei, 2004; Hill & Cleven 2005). Lay (1990) stated that coeducational classes were one of the specific clauses issued by Title IX if they ignored this was breaking the law. Ligg (1993) also pointed out that the offering of single gender courses and programs were forbidden in Title IX. However, there were some arguments about coeducational physical education so it had led some calls for change. Scraton (1993) suggested that coeducational physical education returned to single gender physical education. The integration of boys and girls in physical educ...

Opposition of mandatory Physical Education in high schools believe that if a student has not developed a desire for voluntary physical exercise by the time he or she reaches high school , he or she may not ever (Eberhardt). It is true that individuals should not be forced into something they don’t want to participate in, but if these students don’t get any exercise outside of school, where will they receive an appropriate amount of fitness? Paul Eberhardt, athletic director, intramural director and head coach of the McNair Marlins basketball team in Richmond, B.C., believes “that students don’t care about participating in P.E. anymore and we have to educate students on the benefits of Physical Education”. In the 1994-1995 school year there were 1,133 students enrolled at McNair High School but there were only four P.E. classes available, which meant approximately 120 students attended in these classes. The remaining 1013 grade eleven and twelve students had no Physical Education at all. This is an astonishing figure. “Many students participate in sports and recreation activities outside of school, but most of them get hardly any exercise at all.

Physical education must be mandatory for students all over the world. It provides many conveniences for children later in life. Sports in school encourage kids to play more outside of school and from there, their health increases. Unquestionably, physical education improves kids’

Physical education is an important area in schools today. If taught correctly, it can develop physical and mental skills as well as develop a sense of self. By participating in physical activity, a student’s skill will naturally increase to the demands placed upon it. If a student never tries then their skill will never grow. The mental skills one develops in a physical education class are proble...
