In this assignment I will look at the relationship between the foundational disciplines, which are history, philosophy, psychology and sociology, and education and see how they fit in with contemporary society. I will mainly look at how philosophy has made education what it is today and how philosophers would change education to make it better in their opinion.
According to the American Sociological Association (ASA) sociology is the study of social life, social change, and social causes and consequences of human behaviour. Sociologists look at the structure of society and how people conduct themselves within society. They look at human behaviour and how people react to certain situations etc. They focus on how society is organised and how we experience it. The sociology of education is an analysis of the relation between society and the education system. They look at the actual institution, the individuals in the institution, the practices, processes and the concepts. Sociologists believe that a person’s life chances are affected greatly by the education they receive and choices they have. Marxists would believe that education was a way of controlling the masses and keeping people in their place.

During this class I have been able to explore more into the world of education and through different videos of how education has changed over time. Today, I will be discussing the video “The Bottom Line in Education 1980-Present” and how education operated during this period. I was given the opportunity to understand how schools in the United States were functioning from 1980 until how schools are functioning now. The essay will commence by focusing on the1944 Education Act, as it was "the most important piece of educational legislation since 1902" (Gosden, 1983:3). There was a great need for this Act, because the Second World War caused considerable disruption to the educational system. As Dunford and Sharp point out, "evacuation, staff shortages and suspension of building programmes all created their own problems. War also brought important changes in social attitudes, and [...] there was a determination for a better future" (Dunford and Sharp, 1990:17). Therefore there was a need to remodel the current education system "in order to ensure that every child would go to a secondary school" (Gosden, 1983:1). The study and science of Sociology is a comparitively new pursuit, as opposed to the general sciences such as physics, archeology and chemistry, that is now being used to explain and help improve our way of life and behaviour. I learned about how society basically made boys supposed to like blue and girls supposed to like pink.
