Marriage is considered one of the most important parts in a person’s life. Choosing to enter a marriage can change a person’s life forever. It can bring great happiness and beauty or intense stress and sacrifice into an individual’s life. But, most importantly, it can show people a love that is unconditional. Marriage has existed for hundreds of years and beyond that, the establishment of marriage is seemingly timeless. Interfaith marriage on the other hand, has a little known history or record of occurring. In a book review by Timothy Kelly, he explains how the writer of the book shows the little information that there is about early interfaith marriages, “There are few direct records of intermarriage during the century (19th), so that Rose (writer) cannot trace patterns of interfaith marriage across the period” (Kelly). The fact that there was very little information on early interfaith marriages, suggests that it was an unpopular practice in society during this era. In today’s society, interfaith marriages are very common and are a social norm. But, there are still many religions that have strong opposition to interfaith marriages. Writer William H. Willimon explains that, “Muslims are not permitted to marry outside Abrahamic faiths. Muslim men can marry Jews and Christians; Muslim women can't. Mormons have the lowest rate of interfaith marriage of any American religious group and the highest rate of disapproval of interfaith marriage” (Willimon). Although interfaith marriages are common, that doesn’t mean that it is still accepted by everyone. The subject that is going to be discussed in this essay is the different perspectives of the disadvantages of interfaith marriages.
