When Professor Sloan asked the class to interview someone in our profession, I was thrilled with the idea of talking to someone who could guide me in the field of Allergy and Immunology. I eagerly went home, and without a minute to waste, I looked for the Yellow Pages with all the phone listings. As I was sitting on my couch, I diligently looked through the Yellow Pages for local Allergy and Immunology clinics in my area. The first office that I called is five minutes away from my house. When the receptionist answered the phone, I introduced myself, and I also stated the reason for my call. The receptionist replied, “I am sorry...my boss is on vacation, and she is the only one that could help you." I asked her, "When will she be back?" The receptionist said, "Not until mid December." Before I ended the call, transferred me to her boss’s voicemail, so I left a message with all my information, but I was not expecting her to call me back. I was in distress, but I took a deep breath of air, and I called the other clinics in Hialeah, FL. Each clinic gave me a list of excuses on why they cannot help me! One of my favorite excuses was, "our office is located at Kendall." I shook my head in amazement because the number is registered in Hialeah, FL. At this point I felt frustrated and desperate! After being turned down nine times, I quit for the day. The next day, I went to my primary care doctor's office because my left knee was hurting. He examined my knee, and said, "You need to see my colleague, who is an orthopedic doctor." So, he schedules an appointment for December 4th. Even though Allergy and Immunology would be my ideal choice in medicine, I am opened minded to learn about other fields in medicine. So, I was thrilled because n... ... middle of paper ... ... for someone like me?” She said, “Never give up on your dreams, and do not set your heart on just one branch in medicine.” I nodded my head, and thanked her for time and advices. Overall, I had a good time at the interview, but it did not completely confirm what choice I should make. I would have to interview an Internist next, and then compare and contrast both fields. Base on what Dr. Torres told me, I believe internal medicine suits my personality best. I naturally like solve puzzles, and I believe I would make an awesome “Sherlock Holmes”. It is true what my grandmother says, “en guerra avisada no muere soldado!” The English translation of this old Cuban proverb is, “if you know what you are up against, you will be ready for it.” Now I know what challenges I would be facing if I choose pediatric medicine. These interactions continued fuel my dedication to one day become a medical professional as thoughtful, empathetic, and passionate as the medical professionals I have observed and learned from. I had my first professional encounter with the field of Podiatry when I began shadowing a foot and ankle surgeon. Through the encounters with patients and observations of the clinical and surgical aspects of the field, I developed a passion for the significance of Podiatric care and a desire for the opportunity to pursue a career as Doctor of Podiatric Medicine. Through my passion and determination to contribute to the treatment and care of others, as well as the lessons I have learned from those who I have worked with and observed, I have realized what a career medicine means to me: inspiration. “The purpose of a doctor or any human in general should not be to simply delay the death of a patient, but to increase the person’s quality of life.” Orthopedic surgeons treat a number of conditions that affect the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and nerves. The training to become an orthopedic surgeon requires multiple years of hard work and studying, but in the end, the success is worth all the stress and struggle experienced on the way. Most doctors must dedicate every fiber of their being, countless hours of work, and years of stress in their chosen profession. Medicine is only for those who can’t imagine doing anything else.

Medicine has proven to be an elusive, tempestuous creature. It has appeared to me in visions nightmarish and calm, despairing and joyous. My pursuit has been an odyssey, taking me farther into my heart than I ever dreamed possible. However, before I could even begin to approach the emotional, physical and Intellectual demands of a physician's life, I had to gain a better understanding of myself, my identity and beliefs. Only with this stronger sense of self have I felt the confidence to give my best and my all, and to make my contribution to society.
I think this is the perfect job for me, because I like working with children and I really would like to make life better for children with different diseases and make their life better. They said children are an amazing group to work with, and I really believe that is true. I know it is a hard and long education, but as Ann-Mari Brubakk said, it is all worth it in the end if this is your dream job. She also said it is a job with variation, and for me I think not really knowing what will happen at work every day is good. I cannot wait to start my education and start my professional life as a pediatrician.
1. Please briefly share the influences on your decision to pursue the field of medicine, including shadowing experiences and other medical related activities.
“Always remember to be an internist, my dear.” This was an invaluable piece of feedback I received on a rheumatology rotation in my first year of internal medicine residency. Truly, I have never learned so much about medicine as I did during this first rotation in rheumatology. I became fascinated by the subtle presentations and cases that posed a diagnostic challenge to multiple subspecialties. I have been inspired by rheumatology as a field where multisystem disease is encountered on a daily basis and rheumatologists must use both general medicine and subspecialty skillsets to diagnose and treat patients. The academic challenges in rheumatology initially attracted me to the field however my subsequent experiences with patients, mentors, and research have made me passionate about pursuing rheumatology as my specialty.
My goal in pediatrics revolves around determination to provide comprehensive and compassionate care. I want to be a part of pediatric residency program that offers the opportunity to train in a well-structured, well-administered with family like environment, where teachers love to instruct and direct us through their vast amount of knowledge. I know your pediatrics program would be a good fit for my passions and talents. I am confident that my pursuit of this career path is an invitation to an even fuller and more exciting life ahead.
In order to determine whether or not clinical medicine was the right career for me, I started shadowing Dr. Richard Turner in the ER. Through my experiences with him, I learned that medicine is a problem solving process. As I watched, he would take a patient's history and try to piece together the correct diagnosis by deciding which scenarios were more likely than others. I was attracted by the dynamic nature of each patient's diagnosis and the necessity for an open mind. My hobby of flying has taught me to look at everything in life with a new perspective and to assess the situation from as many angles as possible. Watching Dr. Turner has confirmed my perception of a medical career and the nature of the work involved. Since I love puzzles and problems, the problem solving aspect also increased my desire to become a physician.
My career choice is to become a pediatrician. The question is: what makes this job so interesting or fantastic enough to be chosen? This job requires many sacrifices, skills, and strengths to endeavor the obstacles on the way to the goal. This particular job is also a very honorable and noble job in the sense of helping children with their illnesses and ailments. Personally, I love children and I’m always fascinated by their actions and interesting techniques of expressing themselves. Since I am intrigued by the children’s personality I love spending time with them (and that’s why their child-like ways rub off on me). Thus, I believe that my own childish personality and my love of children will motivate me in the near future to help them out with their medical needs. Also, being a pediatrician and helping out children has its own rewards. Not only will I be doing something I enjoy, but I will be getting paid a generous price as well. A pediatrician’s salary is not the highest one compared to surgeons or cardiologists, but it’s enough to have a life that is something more than simply satisfying. Another good aspect of this job is that they only focus on the health of children rather than all of the age groups. An adult and a child are so different they are nearly two different species. If a child is brought to a doctor who specializes in all age groups, the child would not be getting the same kind of attention that he or she would be getting, compared to that from a doctor who specializes only in children. Doctors that specialize in all age groups are used to make quick, rough, and fundamental actions need for the healing of the patient. a) For many years now I have aspired to be a Pediatrician. My mother is a radiologist technologist so I’ve grown up around the medical field. From an early age, medicine and science struck my interest and they are both subjects I am very passionate about learning. I love helping people, especially kids, which is why I have chosen to pursue this career field. I truly want to make a difference in modern medicine and become the best health care provider I can be.
In the future, I hope to pursue my career dream of becoming a pediatrician. Pediatricians can be identified individuals who specialize in giving medical care to children and adolescents between infancy to adulthood at eighteen years of age. I became inspired to become a pediatrician due to my immense love of children. Perhaps I have an innate intuition for taking care of people being that I have always felt that I excel at taking care of others. The idea of taking care of others truly makes me feel that I serve a purpose, not only to better the life of myself but the life of others. Therefore, I believe that becoming a pediatrician will help me combine the best of both worlds into a career that I adore and cherish.
Persistence is more important than ability to determine a person’s success. When there is a person who wants to do their goal or task they have to be able to work hard for their goal, they need to be dedicated to the goal, and no matter what happens they can’t give up which means that they have to keep going and going until they have finally achieved what they wanted to achieve. So this shows that a great successor needs to be very persistent to achieve and go beyond what they want to do, they need to drive themselves to success, but most of all they need to be patient and have time.
Throughout my life, I have worked towards one goal which is to become a doctor. Medicine offers the opportunity for me to integrate different scopes of science while trying to improve human life. Medicine has intrigued me throughout all my life because it??s a never ending mystery and every answer has questions, and vice versa. Since childhood, I have loved acquiring scientific knowledge, particularly involving biological processes. During my undergraduate studies, I displayed my ability to juggle competing demands while still maintaining my academic focus; I have succeeded at school while volunteering part time, spending time with family and friends, and working part-time. To better serve my expected patient population, I worked over my English and Korean language skills. I have come to discover that a job and even a good income, without another significant purpose, will not bring satisfaction. I planed to utilize my assets, namely my problem- solving affinity, strong work ethic, and interpersonal commitment, to craft a stimulating, personally rewarding career in medicine. I have taken stock of myself, considering my skills, experiences, and goals. I have looked to family and friends, some of whom are doctors, for advice. Because of this self-examination, I have decided to pursue a career in health care. The process has been difficult at times but always illuminating.
