Exercise Science Essay on Doping
A very long time ago the Zulu warriors from Dutch uses a superior potion that is made from the fermented grape skins to enhance their battle ability. This method is called the Dop which known as doping today. Doping enhances the athletes performance illegally, it also contradicts with fair play. Unfortunately doping can sometimes be very harmful and may endanger the athlete?s personal health status. Today doping has come to a point where it is improved by many biological techniques and this had brought the WADA (world anti-doping agency) a real problem. The WADA gives grave punishments for athletes who are tested positive for doping, and sometimes these punishments may exceed the limit or causes an injustice, false accusation, and ruin ones carrier. Therefore doping should not be allowed in any sport circumstances.
Doping, also considered as cheating is capable of enhancing the athlete?s performance and may result in different changes. It is the drug that enhances the performance and there are many different types of drugs depending on what type of sport. An example would be anabolic agents, Androgenic anabolic steroids (artificial versions of the male hormone testosterone) belong to this class and are one of the more commonly abused prohibited substances. Outside of its limited clinical use, anabolic steroids are an illegal substance for doctors to prescribe. For persons looking to increase sporting performance or to improve body image, access is obtained through a growing ?black market? which exists in health centers and gymnasiums . Other types of drugs may be stimulants, diuretics and etc. All of these drugs are capable of increasing the level of performance but it is al...

...cements that promise a stronger pitch or faster sprint? How will sports change, if technologies like gene therapy designed to cure the sick become tools to boost performance? Can this practice be stopped and should we even try? This method of doping is very stealthy it?s also harder for the WADA to find comparing with previous ones and it?s permanent and irreversible. However it is also more dangerous, it may mutate your genes by inserting another gene, and they could damage your heart or liver. They may even make you grow hair on your tongue. Over all, anything weird could happen if a gene is mutated. Therefore this new way to cheat is not smart at all and it should not be used.
Cheating in sports it?s wide of the mark, sport should be something that is so supreme and enhances the persons health, but in this case its killed by mere worldly possessions.
Trivino claims gene doping is the main purpose is to improve the physical performance of athletes. Gene doping is on the list of banned substances, it is in the same category as anabolic steroids. Gene doping is an unfair way for an athlete to physically perform better because they don 't have to work as hard as other that work their butts off to be able to perform at that level. It is very similar to anabolic steroids because the use of the steroids gives that person a greater amount of strength without working for it. Not only does gene doping gives the athlete an unfair advantage to their physical abilities, but also has many cons that could put the individual 's health at risk. Wells states, “Risks associated with gene doping fall into two main areas. Firstly, the product and the procedures for delivery of the product carry risks. Secondly, the uncontrolled expression of the genes may in themselves be harmful” (627). Wells believes, that gene doping can be harmful and has many unknown risks on the effects gene doping will have on an individual 's body. I believe that gene doping shouldn 't be
“It 's important that athletes can compete on a level playing field. And youngsters coming into the sport can know that if they are working hard and training hard, they 'll see a true reflection of where they stand and what they can achieve worldwide and not be swayed by people who are cheating.” This was said by Paula Jane Radcliffe, a long-distance runner and Olympian. Cheating in sports is considered to be immoral. In sports there are many different forms of cheating. Whether it is illegal taping, bribes, or foul play, it is never the way to go. Undoubtedly the most extreme and controversial form of cheating is through the use of PEDs, better known as Performance Enhancing Drugs. There are many different types of Performance Enhancing Drugs. The two most popular being anabolic steroids and
Throughout history humans created sporting events to properly measure the talents and effort put forth by our greatest athletes. Unfortunately a recent trend has been a spark for concern within the professional sporting world which can will only lead to more controversy. This trend is the use and attractiveness of performance enhancing drugs, otherwise known as PEDs. PEDs, while just an enhancement to natural talents, is an unwarranted unnatural agent that is eroding the cohesion within the professional sporting world. These athletes who are using PEDs are doing tremendous damage to their ethical and moral integrity, as well as, the sports integrity, at which they are in. They are creating monstrous persona’s which mirrors the actions of Dr. Jekyll form the novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The athlete’s means of becoming the greatest of all time, to reach new heights in their career, or simply to gain a competitive edge, is not justifiable in almost any
Each year athlete’s ability to perform seems to increase by leaps and bounds. Some reasons for this can be attributed to better training methods, better conditioning techniques, and better over all health of the athlete. While most situations involve one or more of the previously scenarios, some athletes always seem to take it to a step further. They engage in a process called blood doping. This procedure does increase physical performance and athletic ability, but potentially may do more harm than good.
...ther competitions, by wrong and unjust means. And consequently, the sports commissioner s of all the sports have to ensure that the players in a particular sport are not using steroids or any other similar drugs, and for that they often have to direct the medical staff in a particular sport to check the athletes, that whether they are using steroids or any other similar drugs. And in case, if steroids are located in their bodies, then the sports commissioners have to conduct thorough investigation, which eventually, results in unique unprecedented punishments for such athletes. Therefore, it s extremity imperative for these Professional athletes to realize the fact that they are the current role models for the future athletes, and can quite significantly influence the young athletes, all over the world, through any sort of misconduct on their part (Haupt & Rovere,
Throughout the history of athletics, athletes have searched for ways to make themselves better, faster, and stronger. Steroid use is one of the most popular choices among these athletes. Steroids are synthetic hormones that produce specific physiological effects on one's body and have been used since the 1930s (Center for Substance Abuse Research). Although the German Scientists who discovered steroids did not intend to use it for body building or to create better athletes, steroid use has developed into a controversial subject concerning the health of users and other moral issues. The use of steroids in athletics is physically and morally wrong because it essentially promotes the deterioration of the health of athletes and unfair competition among these athletes.
Never had Athletes had more training aids. The downside is that never before have Athletes had more opportunities to cheat mainly through using enhancing performance drugs.
Athletes are always searching for ways to enhance their performance. Recently, beginning in the 1950s, that search has included the use of illegal substances like steroids and growth hormones. Illegal substances have been used widely by athletes in hop es of achieving the desired Olympic gold medal or multi-million dollar contract. Some nations, for example the late East Germany in the 1970s and 1980s, have mandated the use of steroids by their athletes. The downside of using those illegal substances is that because they are illegal, getting caught using them can lead to losing that coveted gold medal, a lifetime ban from sports, and a total loss of honor and dignity. This is why the search is now on to find some legal means of enhancing athletic per formance.
Hosta talks about the relationship between nature and sport and between sport and athlete. Although he mentions example of respect, he does not explain very well what respect in ethics actually means. As an athlete myself you have to have respect for the game. This means that using drugs or any type of illegal enhancement is disrespect to the sport. Having respect between a player and a coach is also important. If you respect your coach, you trust in them that they will do what is best for you. They will also make sure to make you a better person and athlete. Without the respect between the coach and player then you would not receive the benefits that come out of it. This is apart of the “norms of behavior” as Milan Hosta says. (Hosta 91) Hosta fails to explain these “norms” but I believe it is normal for the trust to be there with a player and coach. It is normal to trust the referee of your game to make the right calls. It is all about of the ethics inside the sport that create this sport environment and sport
Steroids became an option to athletes in the Olympics and other major sporting events during the 1950’s. But this use of steroids among athletes only became widely apparent when Canadian sprint runner Ben Johnson tested positive for steroid use after winning the gold medal for the one hundred-meter dash during the 1988 Olympics (Francis, 45). Now a skinny fifteen-year-old can just walk down to the local gym and find people who either sell or know how to get in contact with those who sell the drug that will make him envious of his friends. Steroids are an attractive drug. While steroids seem harmless to the unaware user, they can have a risky effect. Most of the time whether the users are new or experienced, they do not know the dangerous consequences steroids can have on their bodies and their minds. Though steroids cause a relatively insignificant number of deaths in our society, the banning of steroids is justified because steroids have a lot of side effects not known to the uninformed user.
In all professional sports in the United States, the use of PEDs are prohibited. However, there is only one acceptation to that rule. If an athlete is injured, prescriptions to certain drugs which are used in recover are allowed. These drugs may consist of certain chemicals that enhance muscle grow. Some athletes have used this to their advantage and have got prescriptions to these drugs for their own personal benefits, will other athletes are using it for recreational purposes. This, however, is not the only way to obtain PEDs; there are also other ways such as buying them from an underground market. Athletes with the intention to cheat will take the risk of using PEDs, since if they are successful they will achieve fame and money.
Doping is a practice that has been going on since the time of "ancient Greek athletes, who supposedly ate herbs, sesame seeds, dried figs, and mushrooms for this purpose" (Hoberman, 1992, 104). Likewise, athletes have readily consumed such drugs as caffeine and alcohol to improve performa...
“Athletes are in a position to make a decision about what behavior is in their best interest; weigh the risks and benefits according to their own values.” Lewis Kurlontzick, a professor from the University of Connecticut, School of Law, makes this statement when asked how he feels about athletes doping. However as time passes, the level of competitiveness in sport have made athletes feel like they are in an environment where they are forced to take drugs in order for them to compete. The athletes’ main concern or goal when taking perform...

Doping rids the true athletes of what they truly deserve and is wrong; because why should those who put in a hundred per cent of their effort, be outshone by individuals who are choosing to use substances to enhance their physical and mental abilities? Doping damages the sports industry as a whole because it has a serious physical and mental effects on the athletes, as well as damaging the idea of sportsmanship and it also breaks the trust of the fans, as they realise their idols are hypocrites. Doping in sports dates back to the ancient Greek times (need ref here). There are anti-doping agencies worldwide in virtually every country. In Switzerland its anti-doping Switzerland, in Nigeria it’s the Nigerian national anti-doping committee and in the UK its UK anti-doping.
