Parenting styles have been grouped into three different categories: authoritarian, permissive, and authoritative. The authoritarian approach to parenting provides children with a clear set of rules which have to be followed without question or reason, while permissive parents constantly are giving into their child’s every wish. The authoritative parenting style gives children rules along with explanations for those rules, and reinforces good behavior. Therefore parents should make sure the way they parent their children will be positive, and not negatively affect their children now or in their children’s future. According to Consistent Parenting Advice.com the authoritarian parenting style has a “Do as I say, not as I do,” approach. This parenting style is like military school where the rules are strictly enforced and there is no balance. Punishment is often extreme, and can lead to psychological problems in the future. Children who are raised by authoritarian parents seem to do very well in school. However, Children raised by authoritarian parents tend to have poor social skills, low self-esteem, and depression in the future. The effects of this parenting style are greatly negative. (“Consistent Parenting Advice.” 2009). Permissive parents have a much laid back approach. The child is encouraged to make his or her own decisions, and the parents are there to support those decisions regardless if they are right or wrong. Parents usually choose the permissive parenting style because they were brought up in an authoritarian home. For parents who are uninterested in their child’s life, the permissive parenting style often chooses them.
