An ophthalmologist has a very intriguing job. An ophthalmologist has the ability to correct vision and make someone happy for the rest of their life. An ophthalmologist has a very exciting career.
An ophthalmologist’s job consists of prescribing lenses, practicing medicine, everyday eye care, performing surgery, and many other possible subspecialties (What is an Ophthalmologist?). An ophthalmologist is a trained M.D. or medical doctor (What is an Ophthalmologist?). They are trained to provide full care of the eye. The difference in an ophthalmologist and an optometrist is that an ophthalmologist performs surgery. Another difference is salary (What is an Ophthalmologist?). An ophthalmologist can make well over $300, 000 a year (What is an Ophthalmologist?).
To become an ophthalmologist the student must complete 12 years of training and school (What is an Ophthalmologist?). It requires four years of basic college (What is an Ophthalmologist?). After the four years, he or she will need to attend four more years of medical school (What is an Ophthalmologist?). Here is where you will begin training and learning about the job. Medical school will be very expensive and very difficult (Kalia). There are many different medical schools. Indiana University has an outstanding ophthalmology department.

The road to gaining admission to medical school and becoming a physician is long, difficult, and intensely competitive. Once admitted, however, medical students spend the first two years primarily in laboratories and classrooms learning basic medical sciences. They also learn how to take medical histories, perform complete physical examinations, and recognize symptoms of diseases. During their third and fourth years, the medical students work under supervision at teaching hospitals and clinics. Following medical school, new physicians must complete a year of internship that emphasizes either general medical practice or one specific specialty and provides clinical experience in various hospital services. Physicians then continue in residency training, which lasts an additional three to six years, depending on the specialty. Immediately after residency, they are eligible to take an examination to earn board certification in their chosen specialty. The medical field has a very diverse group of careers that all go toward helping people live healthier, better, and longer lives. Women, specifically, need the service of one important person in the medical field, and that person would be a doctor known as an obstetrician/gynecologist or OBGYN.
As a student who is both fascinated with science and desires a career that is dedicated to improving people’s lives, the profession of optometry is a natural fit for me. Wanting to learn more about the profession, I began shadowing several optometrists throughout my time in high school and college. I shadowed in various settings, including two retail chain stores, an ophthalmology office, and a private practice. My goal was to soak up everything about the experience, learning as much as I could from the optometrists as they interacted with patients and assessed their ocular health. I was amazed at how much I was able to learn just from observing other optometrists! One of the most memorable experiences I had while shadowing was when a patient came in with shingles, which the optometrist, Dr. Chelsey Clemens, confirmed was spreading onto her cornea. These physicians treat and diagnose illness and injuries such as broken bones and work trauma patients who need rehabilitation. Almost half of an orthopedic surgeons work is surgical and the remainder is medical treatment. To become an orthopedic surgeon one must follow an educational path through college to medical school and residency, a process that takes about 12 years. Medical school includes subjects such as human anatomy, physiology, chemistry, biology, human development and advanced mathematics. Most programs require an orthopedic surgeon to take 4 years of orthopedic residency training and one year in general surgery, internal medicine or pediatrics. In an orthopedic surgery residency, students learn to diagnose medical problems and begin to perform surgeries. They might also work in specialized areas such as spinal cord rehabilitation or with specific groups of patients like amputees. Students also attend lecture classes such as molecular biology, prosthetics and infectious diseases. Orthopedic surgeons must also learn specific skills that include methods of preventing infections, for example: washing hands, using sterile gloves or other protective equipment, and positioning and using surgical instruments. They use many tools to insert equipment parts such as rods, pins, and bolts; the surgeon must learn how to use all of these tools correctly or they can injure the patient by accident. In addition,

Becoming an orthodontist requires specific education, including: four years of college, four years of dental school, and two to three years of orthodontic residency. (Chaekal). The aspiring orthodontist may major in either health, premedical studies, or life studies. There are also required college courses such as biology, chemistry, and physics. This person will be prepared for dental school through classroom lectures, and laboratory instruction on the physiology of the human body, especially focusing on the structure of the mouth and jaw. My journey towards the field of optometry began in an unsuspecting place; a tiny pharmacy situated inside of a local medical facility. Throughout high school, I spent my time outside of class behind a counter, shadowing and working for a pharmacist who instructed me on the many facets of the profession. I always knew I wanted a career in the field of health, and the more I experienced the more I was certain that becoming a pharmacist was the perfect profession for me.
My interest into becoming an optometrist had begun when I was in high school; it happened in an unconventional way. It was not through watching videos, or someone explaining to me what optometry was, but rather, seeing the power of it firsthand. There was a point in my life where I felt emotions that I was unable to comprehend at the time. Seeing a family member on an operating table was the most petrifying moment that I have gone through, especially when the person on the table was my father. My father had to get a chalazion removed from his right eyelid. The doctor told my family that my father would be susceptible to certain health risks because of his diabetes and the severity of his cyst. This procedure was the hardest thing I have had to deal with in my life because it made me feel helpless. Usually, when my dad needs help he always asks me, but this time I could not do anything. It is interesting to think that something so small had such a big affect on my life.
I am aware of the challeneges and demands that the field of optometry holds, however, I am committed to becoming an optometrist. I am quite passionate about this field, and my desire in this field has only been strengthened through my experiences. It is for these reasons that I would like to pursure a D.O.
As a plastic surgeon, I would mostly be working in hospitals, not out of a private practice. I might have an office in the hospital where I am employed, but the place where a surgeon really earns his salary is in the operating room.
