Opposition Toward Same Sex Marriage

Many arguments against same sex marriage are based on religion. Orthodox Christians, for example, view marriage as a reunion of the essence of man and the essence of woman as portrayed in the book of Genesis. The bible states“ 'If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.” (The NIV Study Bible, Lev 20.13). The United States however was not founded on, and is not ran upon, the laws of Christianity. The Federal Constitution of the United States of America outlines a proper framework for our nation to be run by. The federal constitution of the united states of America was written by well educated business men and political leaders who guided our nation through its rough infancy.

Amendment 1 of the Constitution states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion”(US Const., amend, I). Commonly referred to as separation of church in state, this excerpt restricts our government's ability to create a law on the singular basis that it is a law of any religion. Any argument that portrays being a homosexual or the act of same sex marriage as a religious sin is therefore irrelevant when it concerns laws of our nation.

The second group of arguments against same sex marriages are related to parenting. These arguments claim that people involved in a same sex marriage would be unfit to raise a child based on the presumption that children need both a mother and a father to be successful people. Sociologist Timothy Biblarz disagrees with this when he says:

...g because gay couples are unnatural, although rare for it to be openly stated, influences arguments against it and lies behind people's negative opinions about homosexuality (Cline). An internal and primal fear of the unknown, different, or perceivably unnatural fuels socially acceptable same sex discrimination.
