The community of Oak Forest, Il., lies in southwest Cook County approximately 27 miles south of Chicago. The town is less than half an hour from Chicago Midway International Airport and under an hour from O’Hare International Airport. The Rock Island Railroad metro provides commuter rail service from Oak Forest to Chicago. Interstates 57, 80 and 294 are accessible from the city. History of Oak Forest The earliest settlement of Oak Forest dates back to the early 1800s. The town was called Cooper's Grove after one of its early residents and has been part of Bremen Township since its founding. By the late 1840s, the area was settled by German immigrant farmers who were attracted to the fertile soils and oak forests of the area. In 1848 the post office was renamed New Bremen and included Tinley Park, a nearby community. The village of Oak Forest was incorporated in 1947 and the city was incorporated in 1971. Chicago in the 1920s was a turning point for the development of ethnic neighborhoods. After the opening of the first rail connection from New York to Chicago in the 1840s, immigration sky rocketed from that point on. Majority of the immigrants to Chicago were Europeans. The Irish, Italians, eastern European Jews, Germans, and Mexicans were among the most common ethnicities to reside in Chicago. These groups made up the greater part of Chicago. The sudden increase in immigration to Chicago in the 1920s soon led to an even further distinguished separation of ethnicities in neighborhoods. The overall development of these neighborhoods deeply impacted how Chicago is sectioned off nowadays. Without these ethnicities immigrating to Chicago almost 100 years ago, Chicago neighborhoods would not be as culturally defined and shaped as they are today.
The people of the Eastern Woodlands made many tools to help them in their everyday lives. They made spears, weirs, nets, bows and arrows, lances, knives, taps, snares and deadfall for hunting. Most of those tools were made of wood or bark and other forest material. Arrowheads were made from chert, or flint, from sedimentary rocks. They were shaped like isosceles triangles, the smallest arrows were used for hunting birds, the bigger ones were to spear bears or deer. Flint knives were often oval, or teardrop shaped. For fishing they made spears, weirs, and nets. They also made canoes from hollowed-out trees to help with fishing in the lakes and streams. The Oak Ridges Moraine is one of the last natural areas in southern Ontario which we can preserve for future generations. The Moraine has many natural resources that our city will need for the future. It also is has over nine hundred species of animals, many of which are rare or endangered. Lastly, there are numerous of other places to build homes on without harming twelve thousand years of history. Ruining the beautiful Oak Ridges Moraine would be a mistake because it provides many natural resources, it is home to many animals, and there are other places to build besides the Moraine.
Although Peoria State Hospital was a pioneer in mental healthcare, it was not the first hospital to try and treat patients. The treatment of mental health care had been going on for some time before PSH, but sending loved ones to one of these treatment centers was seen as a last resort. There were people in these hospitals, but most of the time the insane were either taken care of at home by family, housed in almshouses (houses for poor people) or they were sent to jail. In these places there was no treatment. The mental person, if violent, would be bound and or sedated heavily.
Until 1851, the first state mental hospital was built and there was only one physician on staff responsible for the medical, moral and physical treatment of each inmate. Placerville also had another name in the early days which was “Hangtown”. One of the most famous stories on how the town got this name is a gambler named Lopez brought to attention that he was winning in a local saloon. When Lopez started home, some men came and tried to rob him. Lopez fought back and with some help form bystanders and the robbers were captured. These men who attacked Lopez were also wanted for a murder and robbery that happened at a gold camp on the Stanislaus River. After a short trial the men were found guilty the crowd was said to have called out, "Hang 'em! Hang 'em!" Contrary to the name only a small number of people were actually hanged in Hangtown and in 1850, was renamed.
Asylums were thought of as a best place for the mentally ill in the 1900s, but over the years stories of abuses lead people to use drugs and outpatient care instead of sending the insane to asylums. In 1955, nearly 560,000 patients were put in mental hospitals, however, there are now only 35,000 in the twentieth century. There has been a ninety percent decrease in mental health facilities (Campbell 1). In the past, there were no asylums or institutions for the insane to be sent, so they were thrown in jail and were treated as criminals. Dorothea Dix could not stand the unfair treatment and took upon herself to spread mental hospitals around the world. Philadelphia was overcrowded with people. At the time it was also common of its war experiences. People were out looking for jobs. Boy Scouts were on a lookout to find rooms for incoming families. And sometimes even Two, Three, or Four families would crowd in a single or two room apartment with kids. Teens shared beds and laborers did too. During winter of 1917-1918 the death rates had gone up according to the Health Department. They offered social services that were very poor. It was known as the “Blockley” which was an asylum, hospital, and poorhouse. There was Charitable activities ran by the Social Elite. Even schools were short in supplies and there were no high schools until 1934. All this overcrowded population caused an infectious disease. The city government did not take responsibility for this crisis. Neither did Dr. Wilmer Krusen who was the director of the Department of public health. Ranging from the very cold weather of the Chugach National Forest in Alaska to the warm weather of the Kisatchie National Forest in Louisiana or even to the intermediate weather like our on Wayne National Forest in southeastern Ohio. National Forest are also very helpful towards humans and the way we live. On the other side of the hand they may also be harmful to us.
