The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare is a tragic story of two “star-crossed lovers” (prologue) fighting against time and their families for their love. This story is a prime example of what young couples should not do which is, fall in love to fast. Romeo and Juliet knew each other for less than a week when they fell in love and got married. Shakespeare used many instances of time and haste during this story. “The opening scene of the play establishes the pace at which tragic fate will unfold.” (Driver, 488). Romeo, who had just gotten dumped by Rosaline, was devastated. Then he met Juliet at a party and “No sooner does Romeo see Juliet than he falls in love with her.” (Shavi, 511). Later that evening Romeo met Juliet and she says she is in love with Romeo even though they know their families hate each other. “ Their love is instant and mutual and before dawn they are betrothed.” (Shavi, 510). Three instances of time in haste in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet are: how quickly Romeo and Juliet fall in love, how quickly the pair married, and how quickly they die for each other. “Like all young people, Romeo and Juliet are uncertain and hasty in their first encounters with the problems of reality.” (Ribner, 474). Romeo and Juliet might have been in love, but they never had a chance to fully love one another, because they were together for only a short period of time. The only people that know about their love were the Nurse and Friar Lawrence. The nurse, who sided with Romeo and Juliet being together in the beginning, quickly changed her mind and told Juliet that she go ... ... middle of paper ... ... each other. Second they know they would have tried to break the two up, which would have made them want to kill themselves, because they two constantly talked about dying for their love. Lastly the hatred between both families would have driven them apart because they would have gotten forbidden to see each other. As soon as the families found out about them, they realized there fighting was stupid and caused the death of their children. To sum up the whole story Romeo and Juliet’s love never had a chance because time was not on their side and neither were the two families. The young couple thought that everything would be solved if they hurried up and got married and that is what they did and it ended in disaster. This story, by William Shakespeare, is a perfect example of how falling in love quickly can be good in some instances and bad in others.
However, they have not taken into consideration that possibly Romeo and juliet were making brash decisions and were not taking the others thoughts into consideation. Nor Romeo, or Juliet thought about what each other may have wanted. Neither of them stopped to think about the possibility that even if they were dead, that they still might have wanted each other to live. If they wanted they other one to die if they died, that would support the fact that they really didn’t love each because if you truly love someone, you’d never want them to die, even in the event of your
When Romeo found out who Juliet was, he says to himself, “o dear account! My life is my foe’s debt” (I v, 132). Regardless of the fact they were offspring of two feuding families, Romeo can’t help himself but love Juliet, he loved Juliet beforehand of he even discovered Juliet’s identity as one of the Capulet. It is planed he will love Juliet even its forbidden. Furthermore, when Juliet found out from the nurse that Romeo was a Montague, she says, “my love sprung from my only enemy! Too early seen unknown, and known too late! Prodigious birth of love it is to me. That I must love a loathed enemy” (I v, 152-155). Even Juliet didn’t know beforehand that Romeo was an enemy, by fate, she still loved him unconditionally. When she did find her true love was her arch nemesis, it was too late for Juliet to forget the love and hate
Romeo and Juliet is a timeless tale of lovers who's misfortune and immaturity was a cause of their own destruction. The characters individually show immaturity and together demonstrate how ignorance of the world effects more than just their own lives. Romeo and Juliet, as expressed in the succeeding examples, fall in love quickly as a result of their naivety.
It’s often said that love at first sight is what occurred in this dismal story but you can not truly be in love until you have gotten to know the person and actually talked to them. When Romeo first saw Juliet he was already saying he was in love with her and didn’t even speak to her, “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight!” (I.V.52). When in actual, true love you must know the person. Juliet had just learned his name and she was already calling him her love, “My only love, sprung from my only hate!” (I.V.138). On top of that, they were just teenagers. Majority of all teenagers suffer from mood swings due to the hormones raging through their body. One day they’re angry the next they’re sad, so how could they have truly known what they have wanted? Yes, it is possible for teenagers to be in love, but it’s hard to tell whether it’s actual love. “One fairer than my love? The all-seeing sun” (I.II.96) In that line he was talking about a girl he met before he met Juliet, Romeo was claiming he was in love with her, Rosaline, and he was really down about that sitatuion. “Is Rosaline that thou didst love so dear, / So soon forsaken? Young men’s love then lies / Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes.” (II.III.66-68) Friar Lawrence even pointed it out; if he was able to get over Rosaline that quickly then he did not love her. If he could get over her that fast then he could find somebody else and get over Juliet
Romeo and Juliet are not supposed to be together. Upon seeing Romeo, Juliet sends The Nurse to find out who he is. Nurse returns saying, “His name is Romeo, and a Montague, / The only son of your great enemy” (I v 36-37). They instantly become desperate to see each other all the time, ignoring the fact that their families are feuding. Juliet likes the proverbial forbidden fruit, saying, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose / By any other name would smell as sweet; So Romeo would, were he not Romeo called / Retain that dear perfection which he owes / Without that...
When Romeo and Juliet first meet, Juliet orders Nurse to figure out who Romeo was. Nurse upsets Juliet when she says, “His name is Romeo, and a Montague;/The only son of your great enemy” (I.v.142-143). Once Juliet hears this, she realizes that her only love has sprung from her only hate. The Nurse however, doesn’t take this into consideration. She doesn’t see the trouble that this has started, and only cares about Juliet’s feelings. As a result, she delivers this message to Romeo which becomes the beginning of a dangerous relationship. Later in the play after Romeo is banned from Verona, Juliet desperately looks for advice from her Nurse. She is told that,“Romeo is banish'd; and all the world to nothing/That he dares ne'er come back to challenge you;/Or, if he do, it needs must be by stealth” (III.v.224-226). What the Nurse is saying to Juliet leads to danger because there is an imbalance between the irresponsibility and loyalty of Nurse’s advice. Nurse thinks she is being loyal to Juliet because she believes that marriage will cheer her up and Romeo will do her no good. She is making a practical decision here, since it is not the person, but the marriage that will make a difference. For Juliet, this is an act of betrayal and it ruins her relationship with the Nurse. This leads Juliet to Friar Lawrence’s plan, which becomes danger. The loyalty and irresponsibility in the Nurse led to more danger than happiness for Juliet. By not thinking twice about her actions, Nurse led Juliet in the wrong
Everybody knows Romeo and Juliet are supposedly in love; many think otherwise. For example, this love story is a romance, a love on a path with death. Ever heard of Bonnie and Clyde, Cleopatra and Marc Antony, or the couple from titanic? If so observe how romance generally turns out terrible. Usually it ends in death but it also has alternatives, such as: tragic loss, separation, or heart break. Three things about love that are covered in the play Romeo and Juliet are romance, fairytales, and sacrifice.
In this tragedy, Romeo and Juliet display their weaknesses when it comes to love. Romeo and Juliet tend to make poor decisions in general, but especially when it comes to their love. It all started when Romeo saw Juliet for the first time: “What lady is that which doth / enrich the hand / of yonder knight?” (I, v, 40-42). This is when Romeo immediately falls in love, displaying how Romeo tends to fall in love rather quickly, rather than actually getting to know a person first. In essence, Romeo falls head over heels for...
Romeo and Juliet is a tragic story about a pair of star-crossed lovers whose demises were unexpected to most. However, their deaths were a result of their impulsiveness. It caused their problematic marriage, Romeo’s preventable death, as well as Juliet’s preventable death.
Romeo and Juliet decides to get married to hours after they just meet, that is not enough time to decide to spend the rest of their times together. He didn’t even know Juliet until he kissed her at the mascaraed bowl. He was so heartbroken about Rosaline. He went so far as to saying if he sees...
Friar Lawrence finally had enough of Romeo crying and said, “Fie,fie, thou shamest thy shape, thy love, thy wit/ Which, like a unsurer, abound’st in all,/ And usest none in that true use indeed (4.3.122-124).” This is how Friar Lawrence helped married Romeo and Juliet and got Romeo back on his feet. Juliet attitude to the Nurse change when she learned of the Nurse’s different opinion about Romeo and her being married. When Juliet found out her being forced to marry Paris, Juliet believed Nurse would be on her side about not marrying Paris but she was wrong. Because the Nurse knew that there was no other option, she advised “ I think it best you married with the County./ O, he’s a lovely gentleman!/ Romeo’s a dishclout to him. An eagle, madam, (3.5.219-221)” Nurse was trying to tell Juliet that Romeo isn’t here Paris is and he way better looking than Romeo. Juliet felt betrayed and hurt for what the nurse said and yelled “Ancient damnation! O most wicked fiend (3.5.237)!” After finding out the nurse opinion on this matter decided she will go to the Friar to find an answer to her dire situation. Romeo and Juliet has tried to find a way to be with each other but it seems fate could not have that who know’s maybe Romeo and Juliet could have live if they thought this out and told everyone about their secret relationship it would of turned out
Ultimately, Romeo and Juliet become embodiments of impulsiveness. Through their rash words and actions in the tragedy “Romeo and Juliet”, Shakespeare sets forth that both are too hasty in their decisions, leading them into unfortunate events. As the plot unfolds, Romeo and Juliet’s futile love is torn apart by their family’s hate and animosity towards each other. Despite their constant struggle to let their love survive, it is doomed from the beginning of the tragedy. It is plain that lack of foresight and wisdom leads to disaster all around.
Romeo and Juliet (at points) seem to neglect the quickness of time, but their impulsive actions prove
...des her love for Romeo, even from the Nurse. There is a high amount of uncertainty because the audience fear for Romeo and Juliet if their parents found out. Or will their love continue even though they now know that they are enemies.
In conclusion, from the very beginning, the love of Romeo and Juliet was destined to be destroyed. It is tragic that both these people had to die. There were circumstances throughout the course of their lives that led up to their deaths. If their parent's had not been feuding and if the Nurse had not betrayed Juliet, the outcome of this story would have been different, although fate could not be changed. This was the most important factor in the lives of Romeo and Juliet. In my opinion the quote that accurately summarizes this play is, "For never was there a story of more woe, than this of Juliet and her Romeo" (Romeo & Juliet, V, iii, p. 138,
