The liver is the second largest organ in your body and is located under your rib cage on the right side. It weighs about 3 pounds and is shaped like a football that is flat on one side. It processes what we eat and drink into energy and nutrients your body can use. The liver also removes harmful substances from your blood. Certain conditions that develop, such as fatty liver and steatohepatitis, may be signs of liver injury that can lead to permanent liver damage. Fatty liver disease happens when your liver has trouble breaking down fats, causing fat to build up in your liver tissue. This condition may lead to inflammation of the liver, which can cause other serious conditions, including permanent liver damage.
