Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life. To begin with, social media has been proven to be a dangerous addiction due to the many negative side effects like: sleep deprivation, and self-esteem problems. Most of the adult American population is connected to some sort of social media site, and they have joined the banned wagon of people whom check their social media accounts at least five times a day. Using social media to often can be time consuming and essentially causes sleep deprivation because the user stays up late on social media. Since social media has grown in popularity many have began to believe that social media is a life necessity. It is viewed by many as a daily necessity like brushing our teeth, or yet as important as eating. People whom are constantly on social media have been linked to develop self-esteem problems because they are so consumed on pretending and portraying this image of a person they are not. Social media has became such an addiction that many people wake up and the first thing they do is... ... middle of paper ... ...hing. Social media should not be used as often as it is being used because it is not benefiting the user nor is it a necessity. Overall, being connected on social media sites is not a bad thing, but rather being actively connected is and so it should be used in moderation. Knowing the right amount of time to use social media is essential to prevent addiction. If and when using social media it should always be scarcely and with caution to prevent negative outcomes. It has been forty three years since the first email was delivered; since then, our ways of communication have changed. We are now living in a society in which almost everybody is provided with a piece of communicating technology to keep in touch with each other. Social networking service, a platform for people who want to share interests, activities, backgrounds or real-life connections over the Internet, has deeply affected our life in many ways. The debate as to whether the influences are positive or negative has been a controversial issue since 72 percent of all internet users are now active on social media (22 Social Media Facts and Statistics You Should Know in 2014). So, how does social media affect our lives? Speaking for myself, I think social networking is slowly damaging our everyday life by crawling into our personal life, turning into a deadly weapon, and becoming a dangerous addiction and distraction.
The general argument made by Natalie Jacewicz in her article "Social media bad for the minds of young people, right? Maybe not." is that "social media may help improve mental health by boosting self-esteem". More specifically Jacewicz argues that we should embrace social media because it "provides a source of emotional support". I disagree with Jacewicz argument and say that young American women and men my age should limit the amount of time they spend on social media because too much it is bad for their health, both physically and psychologically. Let me explain the divisions of how in details below.
Some people might believe that social media can be addictive and it can but there are reasons why social media is valuable for the world to have.
Many teens, young adults, and even adults are faced with social media addiction. Do people realize this addiction is a serious problem or is it just simply ignored because it is considered as a “hobby”? These things cannot be ignored especially when it is considered a habit. Social media may have not been looked at as a problem when social networking sites were coming out to the public, but today it is very clear that more people are becoming dependent on social networking sites. It seems as if nowadays everyone has a Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, or Instagram account. It is the norm for the 21st century and it is how people communicate and network today. People log on different social networking sites numerous times a day. Some people argue social media is a hobby, and it is only a habit that is not considered dangerous. Today’s social media has grown quickly and as it spreads more people are becoming addicted and not focused on what really matters in the outside world.
It is true that social media has become an important part of most people’s lives. It is a recognized part of our culture no matter what it is used for. Billions of people around the world use it for communication, entertainment and information every day. They keep in touch with family, friends, the latest trends, local happenings and make good use of the social media’s. The majority of people have no problem controlling their usage, but from some it has become a real problem. Some people start withdrawing from the real world and spend hours on end absorbed in their social media. Others have let it take over their daily lives with constant interruptions. Social media can be addicting, to most people. Social media affect some adults, but mostly young people. I agree that Social media can take over a person’s life. For which all comes to believe that our society is in a crisis with excessive use on social media. Therefore excessive use of social media “can indeed” contribute to addictive behavior (drugs, tobacco, and alcohol) and of course mental health issues. One may say that all this information about social media may be a bit exaggerated, but things like this have occurred.
