Negative Effects of Computer Addiction to the Academic Performance of Engineering Students

What is computer addiction? Is it bad? How does it affect the academic performance of engineering students? And how does the students adapt to this kind of addiction?

Computer addiction is excessive use of the computer which leads to serious negative consequences for personal, social, or on the behavior of an individual. A study made by Block (2008), stated that "Conceptually, the diagnosis is a compulsive-impulsive spectrum disorder that involves online and/or offline computer usage and consists of at least three subtypes: excessive gaming, sexual preoccupations, and e-mail/text messaging".

Internet Addiction, otherwise known as computer addiction, online addiction can be varied into different problems. This also involves cyber-relationship addiction, cybersex addiction, information overload, and net compulsions.

Furthermore, the Internet gives a constant source of information and entertainment to every people, and could be accessed from almost every smart phones as well as tablets, and laptops. Most social networking sites allow both public and private communication about any topic.

Based on Young (2013), “Each person’s Internet use is different. One might need to use the Internet extensively for work, for example, or an individual might rely heavily on social networking sites to keep in touch with faraway family and friends. Spending a lot of time online

only becomes a problem when it absorbs too much of one’s time, causing them to neglect their relationships, work, school, or other important things in their lives.”

RECOMMENDATION

The researchers would like to recommend this study because this can help the students in preventing addiction in computer games. The study performed by the researchers shows that majority of the students play computer games. This paper helps the students to be aware in their attitudes.
