“Over two million copies sold” seeing that on the cover of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens I told myself to give it a chance. I had heard many different opinions about the book. Most of my peers were not overly excited when the y finished. However I decided to go into reading the book with a positive attitude knowing if I did enjoy it writing a paper about it would be much easier and I might even learn something. Reading The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens I saw many ways each habit pertained to my life. Some I felt I practiced fairly well while reading about a few others I knew I needed a little work. The habit I need the most work on is undoubtedly being proactive and the habit I need the least work on is sharpening the saw.

Whether they are positive or negative, our habits are an integral part of our lives. Because of this, when Professor James VanderMey addressed the 33rd annual Honors Convocation at Mid Michigan Community College, he decided to speak on the topic of habit. In his speech, entitled “Remarks on Habit,” VanderMey (argues against Sartre’s point of view by) discusses the advantages of having good habits, especially the habits represented by the Diploma Qualification Profile, a series of proficiencies that students learn as they are educated at Mid Michigan Community College. First, he shows that good habits lead to creative problem solving. Then, he argues that our habits make us who we are. Finally, he shows how good habits may grow and multiply. Habits, especially DQP habits, are positive and useful, because they allow one to think creatively, become a better person, and find innovative ways of doing.
... it was nice to not feel overwhelmed by the language used in the book. Overall, this book was insightful, entertaining and extremely helpful. I loved this book and highly recommend it.

“Don’t” a word used a little too often in the article “11 Rules for Raising Teenagers.” Author Ellen Rittberg states her opinion in how she believes these eleven rules are what you need when raising teens. In Rittberg’s article the eleven rules are broken down into how each of these rules apply to teenagers and why they need to be enforced by parents while raising their teenagers. Although Rittberg may have good intentions in providing a guideline of rules in raising teens, she gives a bad impression to readers by making logical fallacies on many occasions, inappropriate use of appeals when trying to relate to readers, and using offensive word choices when trying to get her point across.

I get the impression that she is sad or lost because she is twirling her hair in between her fingers. Her head could possibly be tilted down in a depressed motion. I think her hands are the only thing visible because the author is trying to set of the mood of th young girl, and I think this is shown by the twirling of the hair between the fingers.

I will use what I have learned from this book in the future by creating more urgency in myself when I know that something needs to be changed. Also, if I ever find myself in a position of leadership, I will be sure that every employee working for me understands why we need the change, supports it, and has a sense of urgency to get it done. Next, it will help me be more careful about my communication, and making sure that everything I do, verbally and nonverbally, should be showing that I am incredibly dedicated to the change that I am trying to introduce. I have recently discovered a majestic book called the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey. You may be thinking “Another useless book written by adults? N thank you.” But you are wrong. Many teenagers just like you and me have participated in writing this book by writing their own stories of how this book helped them. This book is split into 3 sections. This was not as easy a read for me. I suppose I am a victim of my generational upbringing, in that, I feel the need to be informed in an entertaining manner. This book has good information, but I had to continually check my focus. Those times when I was truly drawn in were the times when the writer was relating back to a story from his life or others and how it worked in to the particular habit he was teaching at that time. That being said, the following areas are where I believe I can use to make myself and my team better.
