Growing up, children have been taught to not be dishonest or lie to one another. They are taught that deceiving others unethical and it was frowned upon as a negative trait. However, just as anything can be good or bad, deception, misleading and lying can be used in a more positive aspect as long as the motives for doing so were good. Hateful deception is used to ruin people's lives whereas benign deception is used to enhance the lives of others. Both types of deception, affect an individual’s life, happiness and relationship with other individuals. In William Shakespeare’s play, Much Ado about Nothing, Shakespeare develops the idea that deceptions do not always have to be malevolent. Deception, either intentional or not, can be used in a comic or playful effect and can affect an individual’s thoughts or feelings. It takes many forms, whether it is through misinterpretation, manipulation or even purposely thought out schemes. These different forms of tricks can ultimately lead to entertainment and the pursuit of happiness or disaster and heartbreak. Many of the main characters in the play are a victim to trickery and deception and it is because of this that they act the way they do. 	The first example of deception we see is with the characters of Beatrice and Benedick. These two characters provide the humor throughout Shakespeare's comedy; their repartees and soliloquies tend to leave the reader smiling and anxious for more dialogue between them. Beatrice and Benedick have had a relationship prior to their battles of wit to which she alludes to in Act 2: "Marry, once before he won it for me with false dice; / Therefore your grace may well say I have lost it’ (2.1.265-7). Shakespeare’s Much Ado about Nothing is, on the surface, a typical romantic comedy with a love-plot that ends in reconciliation and marriage. This surface level conformity to the conventions of the genre, however, conceals a deeper difference that sets Much Ado apart. Unlike Shakespeare’s other romantic comedies, Much Ado about Nothing does not mask class divisions by incorporating them into an idealized community. Instead of concealing or obscuring the problem of social status, the play brings it up explicitly through a minor but important character, Margaret, Hero’s “waiting gentlewoman.” Shakespeare suggests that Margaret is an embodiment of the realistic nature of social class. Despite her ambition, she is unable to move up in hierarchy due to her identity as a maid. Her status, foiling Hero’s rich, protected upbringing, reveals that characters in the play, as well as global citizens, are ultimately oppressed by social relations and social norms despite any ambition to get out.
