Abortion The methods and laws of abortion are always changing. Different countries have different laws about what conditions are needed for it to be legal. There are many methods of abortion that have been used in the past. Some are still used today and some have been outlawed. Abortion is very controversial when it comes to human rights. Legalities of abortion are constantly changing all around the world. Abortion law divides everyone into five categories. The first category includes countries that either totally prohibit abortion or only permit it to save a woman’s life. About 26% of the world’s population fall into this category. 68 countries are included in this group. Some of these 68 countries have zero exceptions to abortion. A few of these countries are Egypt, Haiti and The Philippines. The second category includes countries that have laws permitting abortion to protect a woman’s physical health. Almost 10% of the world’s population live in the 35 countries that are a part of this group. Some of the countries in category 2 are Cameroon, Pakistan and Peru. These laws say that abortion is legal in health and therapeutic situations. This law can be interpreted in different ways so it is not always effective. When these laws do not mention anything about the mental and emotional changes a woman goes through during pregnancy, it is said to be protecting physical health only. The third category only protects the mental health of woman and justifies abortion because of distress that could be caused by rape or incest. A professionally diagnosed fetal impairment can also be grounds for an abortion. Pregnancy outside of a marriage can also allow a woman to have an abortion under these laws. When someone believes that abortion should be totally illegal they are said to be “Pro-Life.” Usually people Pro-Life are very strongly opposed. People who are Pro-Life normally believe that abortion should be illegal in all cases with absolutely no exceptions. Pro-Choice people have a common belief that a woman owns her body and can do whatever she wants with it. People who are Pro-Choice believe in freedom to end pregnancy and end the lives of unborn children. Laws on abortion are always changing in every country of the world. There are exceptions and special circumstances in every law. There are many methods of abortion that are legal. Other methods have been outlawed in certain countries. Abortion is a very controversial topic in Human Rights groups.
