Life as a Sports Medicine Physical Therapist
As a Sports Medicine Physical Therapist, many people are trained to diagnose and help prevent injuries that occur during physical activities (“Physical Medicine”). Physical therapists examine patients, and prescribe medications as well as order diagnostic tests to perform and interpret. They usually counsel their clients on preventive care, diets and also hygiene. Most physical therapists stretch, and massage their clients to help strengthen and enhance mobility. Some are even skilled enough to operate on patients when they have broken bones, or torn ligaments. Being a Sports Medicine Physical Therapist is a very competitive and exciting career, with challenging job requirements, many responsibilities, and demanding education and training requirements.
If considering becoming a Sports Medicine Physical Therapist, one should prepare for the amount of education and training required to fulfill the job. It is crucial that anyone going into the medical field earns a high school diploma. College admissions directors will be looking for exceptional high school education backgrounds. Although these courses may not be required, it would be beneficial to take health and nutrition classes, along with science courses such as biology, chemistry, and physics before entering college (“Physical Medicine”). Considering the fact that everyone will not share the same cultural background, it would be an advantage to learn a foreign language, and take psychology to help relate to patients and their families (“Physical Medicine”). All of these assets I learned from my observation gives me an advantage on to become a successful physical therapist. In addition, to become a successful physical therapist you must have the proper resume as well.
