The media is an important part of our lives and can be a great teacher and an excellent source of information. It also has the potential to generate both negative and positive effects. We will explore the negative effects it has on our children through television, video game, internet and music.
Television has changed dramatically over the years it has went from a small black and white 12 inch to a projection size, with high definition color, and a digital video recorder on the side. The way we receive television has changed also, from an antenna on top of the house to a satellite somewhere high in the sky that gives you hundreds of channels, and just like technology has evolved, so has what children see on television. There was a time when shows like “The Cosby Show” or” The Mickey Mouse Club” were the number one show on television, but in today’s world it’s “The Walking Dead” “Dexter” and “America Horror Show” all shows full of violence, killing and torture. Not only has television shows changed, but so have cartoons, the more popular ones such as Sponge bob and Transformers which children love, are just as violent as some prime time or cable shows. For instance” Sponge bob” a sponge that lives under the sea, uses inappropriate language, and has been punched in the head with everything from a hammer to a skillet, he has been baked in the oven, burned to a crisp and shot to the moon, but he still lives. What information is this sending to our children about violence? According to research carried out by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP). “Children who view shows in which violence is very realistic, frequently repeated or unpunished are more likel...

Imagine what the world would be like if when people came home from school or work, they were not able to sit in front of their television and watch their favorite shows. This would be hard to think about considering that not a day goes by that people don’t use some form of media. Media is used to obtain information and watch entertainment. There are many forms of this, and some include newspapers, the Internet, television, and so much more. While there are obviously many great benefits to the growth of media, there are some undeniable and harsh downsides. “In a study on fifth graders, 10 year old girls and boys told researchers they were dissatisfied with their own bodies after watching a music video by Britney Spears or a clip from the TV show “Friends”" (Sanders). This is only one of the many disturbing statistics about the effects that media can have on people. An extensive amount of research and studies have been done over this topic, and it is very evident that media influence has greatly affected society and its peoples’ behaviors in a negative way.
“Myriad studies show that television violence affect children by desensitizing children to the horror of violence, teaching them to accept violence as a solution to problems, teaching them to imitate the violence they see on the television and leading them to identify with characters seen on television (and thus imitate the characters they identify with) (Parenthood Web).” The amount of violence in television programming is obviously directly related to the amount of violence witnessed by children. The more of a role that television plays in the daily activities the more of a role violence will influence that child. In 1985 alone, 85% of all television programming contained violence, with 92.1% of cartoons aired containing violence. These cartoons generally contain one violent act every three minutes ...

The purpose of this paper is to present a literature review on existing articles relating to the possibility of violent video games promoting aggressive behavior. The hypothesis set forth was that people who played non-violent video games displayed more Prosocial behavior versus those who played violent video games displayed more antisocial and aggressive behavior. A search was conducted on regular search engines on the internet, and on EBSCOhost using the title “can violent video games promote aggressive behavior.” The research articles presented are obtained from five case studies each focusing on different measures that were obtained, methods used, the participants involved, the designs of the study, and the results of the studies.

Violent video games increase aggressive behaviour in children. Studies involving around 3000 participants found that aggression has a direct relation with violent video games. Certainly, this effect of violent video games on aggression is as strong as the effect of condom use on risk of HIV infection; furthermore, they found that violent video games increase aggressions in both genders in children and adults in experimental and non-experimental studies (Anderson & Bushman 2001, pp. 353-359). Another study says that violent video games lead children to commit felonies. Craig Anderson of Iowa state university in Ames and his colleague Karen Dill found that people who play violent games are more likely to perpetrate assaults and robberies (Muir 2004, p.26A). Another study was published in the Journal of Adolescence by Barbara Krahe and her ...

Children daily see hundreds of violent acts on television. Most parents notice the obvious acts of gore and try to avoid those types of shows; however, what parents do not realize is that cartoons contain just as much, if not more, violence per episode. When parents see shows such as “SpongeBob SquarePants,” for example, they seem more comical rather than violent, and do not grab the parents’ attention. However, children are more prone to being frightened by violence due to the fact that they are much more literal than older children and adults (Drinka 1).

Children can be influenced and impacted in many ways whether it is from their parents, peers, and even strangers. One thing many people don’t realize is that many children, nowadays, are actually being influenced by the media, meaning they are being affected by different media sources, such as television and the internet. The question is whether the sources of media, television and the internet has a positive effect or a negative effect on children, and which source of media has a bigger effect.
Most American's would agree that children watch a lot of TV. It's common to see a child sitting in front of the TV on a Saturday morning with their Coco Pebbles watching their favorite superhero. This sounds harmless enough. However, many parents and teachers across the country are worried about the cartoons their children are watching. They feel that the cartoons have become too violent and are having negative long-term effects on children. It is common to see young boys pretending to shoot one another, while jumping on the couch and hiding in closets as a sort of make-believe fort. But parents say that children are learning these behaviors from cartoons and imitating them. Others however, disagree, they say that violence in cartoons does not effect children and that children need this world of fantasy in their lives. They say that children would show these same behaviors regardless of the content of the cartoons they watch.
