The growth of the social media has blurred the distinction between public and private and personal and work life. It is becoming specifically a challenge for teachers whose comments and photos can enrage students and parents. The social media is no longer private for teachers because their posts are scrutinized by not only the administrators but also by the parents and the media. There are an increasing number of cases where teachers have been fired from their jobs because of the social media posts. As indicated in one of the class readings, a Florida teacher Jerry Buell was fired by the school board by posting comments in opposition to the legalization of gay marriage in New York. There are many controversial issues that exist within society and people are always free to air their opinions. Teachers always teach students to communicate their ideas freely and to respect other people’s opinions. In order to raise effective future generations, they should understand that people can have differences of opinion on many issues. As long as the public opinions of teachers are not discussed in class, they should be allowed to express them freely. The controversial issues are always discussed on public forums and the social media that students and parents have access to. They understand that people can have differences of opinion and they have to respect their opinions as long as they do not interfere with their rights. By expressing their opinions on controversial issues on the social media, teachers do not interfere with the personal rights of their students. They can only interfere with these rights if they discuss their opinions in the classroom. In the classroom, controversial issues should be presented fairly without bias because it is the obligation of a teacher to ensure that all students are comfortable in the classroom. Teachers are part of society and they are allowed to contribute to societal change. They should be free to express their opinions on issues and their tastes and attitudes. Therefore, it was wrong to suspend Jerry Buell for opposing comments on gay
