Media Affects on the Self- image of Women
When you first glance at this article, you might say to yourself “I know what women in the media is about, it's stereotypes and sexism.” What you probably don’t know is that however subtle, these visual cues are affecting women individually and collectively, in how they view themselves and other women. Relationships are a fundamental aspect of women’s behaviorism and advertising exploits this. It turns people into objects and offers products as a replacement for human contact, producing serious affects on the self- image of women and adolescent girls.
Young women aged 15 to 30 are a prime industry target since 80 per cent of all consumer products are purchased by women in this age group. Advertisers spend large amounts of money on psychological research and focus groups, and what have they learned? That women are vulnerable to the promise of a relationship with a product and these advertisers make use of this on the basis that purchasing and use of certain products will resolve women’s social, emotional, and financial difficulties. We’ve all heard the phrase ‘You can never be too rich or too thin.’
The most widely read magazine among teenage girls, Seventeen, states that it ‘encourages independence’ and is a girl’s ‘Bible,’ but more than half of the magazine is fashion, beauty, and boys. It teaches adolescents that the most important thing on their minds should be appearance and attracting men. ... supposed to be competing with other girls for attention from boys. Of course we don’t take all ads literally, but we have to remember that they add up and we are exposed to up to 1500 ads daily. The cultural messages that we are receiving from these ads do affect young women immensely. To be aware of this issue is important to everyone. As author and lecturer Jean Kilbourne says “These days, self-improvement seems to have more to do with calories than with character, with abdomens than with absolutes, with nail polish than with ethics.”

In a brilliant update of the Killing Us Softly series, Jean Kilbourne explains the dangers of advertisements and how they objectify women. Advertisements intelligently portray women in a sexual and distorted way in order to attract the consumers’ attention. Media sets a standard on how young women view themselves and puts them at risk for developing an eating disorder. Kilbourne’s research has led her to educate those who have fallen victim to achieving the “ideal beauty” that has evolved in today’s society.
Everyday we expose ourselves to thousands of advertisements in a wide variety of environments where ever we go; yet, we fail to realize the influence of the implications being sold to us on these advertisements, particularly about women. Advertisements don’t just sell products; they sell this notion that women are less of humans and more of objects, particularly in the sexual sense. It is important to understand that the advertising worlds’ constant sexual objectification of women has led to a change in sexual pathology in our society, by creating a culture that strives to be the unobtainable image of beauty we see on the cover of magazines. Even more specifically it is important to study the multiple influences that advertisements have on men, women and young girls, all of which will be discussed and analyzed in this paper.
This is not only damaging towards women, but it also affects the mindset of men, who are then told that the sexual assault and abuse of women is acceptable, because women take pleasure in it as well. This is not the case, and marginalizes women because ads have played a role in the formation of the normalization of rape culture in modern day society. Another important statement that Kilbourne makes is that ads sell more than products, that they sell values, images, concepts of love, sexuality, success, and normalcy. She says that ads tell people who they are and who they should be. Through the propagation of the idea that women are willing to be sexually assaulted, ads marginalize women by telling them that the willingness to be submissive and sexually assaulted is a positive mindset. In this way, ads are Photoshop and hours of retouching and makeup, advertising has literally created a body type of a thin, in shape woman with considerable sized breasts, a small waist, long legs, with no wrinkles or blemishes, considered impossible to achieve in a healthy way, which inadvertently can lead this to women. This causes the women viewing these ads to feel marginalized and ashamed of their own bodies, which can also lead to women developing eating disorders and resorting to other unhealthy methods to achieve this body type. The exhaustive battle of what advertising is and what it’s not is never-ending and both ends of the spectrum can only battle with statistics, words, and opinions on the fact of the matter. Many arguments have arisen since the establishment of the advertising industry and everyone sheds their own light on the subject. In “Beauty and the Beast of Advertising,” Jean Kilbourne argues that the advertising industry portrayal of women is narrow-minded and produces emotional and psychological problems within women in regards with their roles in society, their physical appearance, and sexual attitudes. She also emphasizes how the world of advertising creates artificiality among women. On another note, the author of “What Advertisement Isn’t,” John O’Toole, takes a look at how the government has too much control of and poorly regulates advertising, how it is not deceptive on a subconscious level, and how advertising is a sales tool and should not be evaluated by journalistic or any other standards. These two arguments talk about issues in advertising that interconnect on broader levels but essentially are speaking of two different levels of advertisements.

To sum it up according to the above studies advertisements can affect women’s perception of the ideal body shape, moreover in many cases it can affect women’s self-esteem. Also consciously or unconsciously women compare themselves to models in advertisements and this comparison may make women less confident which may drive them to engage in weight loss practices or even more it may make them develop eating disorders.
“Ditzy shopaholics. Mean girls. Boy-obsessed bimbos. Are these really the only ways for girls to be beautiful and cool?” (New Moon). Young girls are faced with a tough decision that marketers seem to force them to make on the spot. They can choose to be popular and cool or kind, pure, and happy. The answer may be clear at first glance, but upon further investigating the once crystal clear perspective becomes muddy with the sludge of a selfish society and the egotistical way of thought. Girls are choosing to be provocative and sexy instead of nice and happy. Girls are not born with those ideas in their head, they were planted by millions of advertisements telling girls that’s how they should look and act. America is losing the young girls of this generation to marketing tactics focused on outward appearance and social standing. Even though girls want to look older and parents are willing to pay for their daughters to feel that they fit in, advertisements put too much emphasis on looks and popularity and are destroying young American girls’ innocence.
Media’s ability to use advertising to sell sex, images of ideal body figures, and gender expectations have been proven to be problematic in today’s society. Body shaming, eating disorders, and extreme makeovers are some of the results advertising is responsible for, nut fail to comment upon. Furthermore, gender differences and role expectations are advertise in mass media outlets such as television, movies, and sport venues where women are often objectified as sex objects, submissive damsels in distress, and subjective to ideal body images which are not reflective of today’s social reality. When girls are disheartened over their inability to look like some media idol or doll, then it is time to pay attention and ask why. Psychologist Levine and Kilbourne, emphasize a need to stay more connected, and finding out why children feel they have to compete with the images of people they see in the media (So Sexy So Soon 27). The idea of looking sexy may be fine for adults, but the notion of sexy little girls is somehow disturbing. TV is setting the agenda and succeeding as it paints the perfect girl, as tall, skinny, tan, pretty, and rich. TV commercials sell sexy because sexy sells, and is now targeting younger audiences. A preteen viewing a Bratz Dolls commercial will be prompted to visit their web site, where she will be greeted with attractive dolls dressed in sexy outfits. The dolls portray an image of teenage girls with large attractive eyes, lush glossy lips, and dressed in the latest fashion.
The documentary Killing Us Softly 4 discusses and examines the role of women in advertisements and the effects of the ads throughout history. The film begins by inspecting a variety of old ads. The speaker, Jean Kilbourne, then discusses and dissects each ad describing the messages of the advertisements and the subliminal meanings they evoke. The commercials from the past and now differ in some respects but they still suggest the same messages. These messages include but are not limited to the following: women are sexual objects, physical appearance is everything, and women are naturally inferior then men. In today’s world, advertising reaches and influences teens in both negative and positive ways. Teens are bombarded with ads through television, teen magazines, radio, and the internet. Advertisers know teen’s buying power and their willingness to spend their money. Many companies even hire teens to be “consultants” and trendspotters. They want to know what teens are thinking and their likes and dislikes. Some feel this is a good thing and that teens are letting companies know what they want. On the other hand, many believe all this advertising to teens has a negative impact on them. Ads show models with “perfect” bodies. “Every year, the average adolescent sees over 5,000 advertisements mentioning attractiveness” (Haugen). Some feel this leads to teens having low self-esteem, while others argue that it does not have an effect. These people believe teens have the power and control in the advertising world.
We are exposed to 3,000 advertisements on a daily basis, which will consume two years of our lives (Kilbourne). Jean Kilbourne, in “Killing Us Softly 4: Advertising’s Image of Women,” provides evidence about how advertising’s image of women has gotten worse. Kilbourne states that these advertisements do more than just sell products they tell us who we are and who we should be. In many of these advertisements women are depicted as objects or things, causing widespread violence towards women. In this paper, we will discuss how sexualization in the media is negatively affecting advertising’s image of women.
In this age, media is more pervasive than ever, with people constantly processing some form of entertainment, advertisement or information. In each of these outlets there exists an idealized standard of beauty, statistically shown to effect the consumer’s reflection of themselves. The common portrayal of women’s bodies in the media has shown to have a negative impact on women and girls. As the audience sees these images, an expectation is made of what is normal. This norm does not correspond to the realistic average of the audience. Failing to achieve this isolates the individual, and is particularly psychologically harmful to women. Though men are also shown to also be effected negatively by low self-esteem from the media, there remains a gap as the value of appearance is seen of greater significance to women, with a booming cosmetic industry, majority of the fashion world, and the marketing of diet products and programs specifically targeting women.
To sum up, it is often said that advertising is shaping women gender identity, and some have been argued that the statement is true, because of the higher amount of sexual references of women that advertisement show and the damages that occur on women’s personality and the public negative opinions of those women. As well, the negative effects that those kinds of advertisements cause to young generations and make them feel like they should simulate such things and are proud of what they are doing because famous actors are posting their pictures that way. Others deem this case as a personal freedom and absolutely unrelated to shaping women gender identity. On the contrast, they believe that, those sorts of advertisements are seriously teaching women how to stay healthy and be attractive, so they might have self-satisfaction after all.
The average American is exposed to hundreds of advertisements per day. Advertisements targeted toward females have an enormous effect on women's thoughts, attitudes, perceptions, and actions. Most of the time, women don't even realize these advertisements are formulating self-image issues. These ideals surround them daily and they become naturalized to the ads. Advertising creates an entire worldview persuading women to emulate the images they see all around them. In order to create a market for their products, companies constantly prey upon women's self esteem, to feel like they aren't good enough just the way they are. This makes women constantly feel stressed out about their appearance (Moore). Advertising has a negative effect on women's body image, health, and self-esteem.
