The first thing I think of or most people think of when they hear the word Mayans, is how they think the Mayans believed the world was ending December 21, 2012. From research though, you find out that this not the case at all. And the Mayans didn’t believe that at all it is just a new age theory. The Mayans are such a rich culture and have so much history behind them. The ethnic Mayans are one of the earliest developed civilizations. They are a native Mesoamerican people that were founded back in 250 A.D. The Mayans flourished until about 900 A.D., most say their fall came after the Spanish conquest. Some aspects though still are alive mostly the Mayan Indians of Mexico and Central America. The first 650 years scholars call the “Classic Period” and there were over 40 Mayan cities across Mexico, Guatemala, and Northern Belize mostly. No one is completely sure though why the decline happened after 900 A.D. but most suspect because of the destruction and scattering because of the wars. The Mayan culture is fascinating. Three aspects of it that I believe to be important and that more people should know and learn about are their spiritual beliefs, their language, and their economy.
The Mayans are an extraordinary culture but I find that their beliefs are truly what make them fascinating. The Mayans believe in polytheism which is the belief in or worship of more than one god. Their beliefs involve more than that though, their beliefs involve astronomy, divination, human sacrifice (in the past), elaborate burial services, and worship in pyramids. After 900 A.D., because of the Spanish conquering, most converted into Roman Catholicism but kept some Mayan practices such as Mayan cosmology, deities, and domestic rituals. There is not very ...

...depth, it is amazing the facts I found out about them and how they became the culture they are. Their beliefs are the most fascinating to me just because their beliefs are so unique compared to other cultures and it made me find out the truth that how most Americans believe they thought the world was going to end isn’t true and really the Mayans didn’t believe the world was going to end. Now, I know that they are much more than that. I hope that they can survive and continue a culture that has been around for centuries making it unbelievably historic and rich in culture. I hope someday I can visit the Mayan culture because that would be fascinating to see in person this diverse and enrich myself in a different culture that I believe to be one of the most interesting ones I have learned about. The Mayans are an amazing culture that others should learn about too.
It is very likely that most people have heard about the Mayan Civilization in one way or another. Whether fictitious or factual, this ancient culture iw idelt recognized. The Mayan people lived from about 250 to 900 CE in Mesoamerica. Which includes modern day Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, and parts of southern Mexico. These people had many remarkable achievements, all of which can fit under the categories of scale, genius effort, and significance. These achievements include an advanced trade system, an amazing understanding of numbers, and the ability to design and build cities that are still mostly standing today. However, their most impressive achievement is their complex calendars.
The most remarkable achievement of the Maya was their calendar. Every Mayan achievement listed, however, are very remarkable in their own right. Remnants of the Mayan society are still seen throughout our world today from all four of their discussed achievements. One could have an ethnocentric denial of the sheer remarkability of the advancements of the Maya because of some of the advancements of the Western World at that time period, however, the Maya achieved feats that the Western World could not even fathom. In fact, much of Maya architecture, such as their pyramids, cannot even be replicated today. The Mayan civilization may have physically declined centuries ago, but their concepts and principles will forever keep the Maya alive.
The ancient Mayans were a very well developed society with a very accurate calendar, skilled architects, artisans, extensive traders and hunters. They are known to have developed medicine and astronomy as well. All of this was developed while the Europeans were still in the Dark Ages.
The Mayans were independent city-states with many traits and beliefs that categorized en as Maya. In addition with their writing system, calendar system, their unique view of the universe and rich culture.
The Mayan interpretation of the cosmos included a plethora of gods: some benevolent, others malignant; some unattainable, others close at hand. Defining past, present and future, it concerned itself with death, the afterlife and reincarnation. Itzamna was a Mayan god that represented the earth and sky. This god was there to produce vegitables. The Aztec beliefs were very similar to that of the Mayan civilization. Both societies were very similar in their belief of gods, sacrificing, and wars. The ritual of human sacrifice was infulenced by the Toltec tradition. Praying, sacrifice, speaking in metaphors were all forms of speaking with dieties. The calendar was very accurate, more accurate then the calendars that we follow now. Europeans thought that Mesoamerican people were wild people because they were cannibals, believed in many gods, and "enjoyed sex".
It seems that they selectively adopted practices of the Olmec and Teotihuacan. One social aspect of life that was influenced by outside influence was religious practices. “At the least, Olmec styles and traits reflect specific religious beliefs and elite ideologies.” (Houston and Inomata 71) The changes to Maya religion is evidenced by cruciform caches. Olmec style jade pieces were found in caches the Yucatan. “Andrews (1986) believes [the jade] to be imported from the Olmec heartland in the late Middle Pre-Classic period…These data suggest to Andrews that there were direct contacts between the Olmec heartlands and the Northern Maya lowlands.” (Houston and Inomata 84) The existence of Olmec jade pieces in Maya possession is a solid link between their cultures. This is directly interrelated with ritual practices, and likely religious
The Maya Civilization originated in the Yucatán region during the Preclassic Period at around 2000 BC. There is some argument as to when the Preclassic Period began for the Maya. It 's argued to have began as late as 2600 BC, while there 's claim that it 's earlier because there are permanent Maya settlements along the Pacific coast that date to 1800 BC. A difference of eight hundred years, depending on region.
In the Central America, most notably the Yucatan Peninsula, are the Maya, a group of people whose polytheistic religion and advanced civilization once flourished (Houston, 43). The Maya reached their peak during the Classic Period from around CE 250 to the ninth century CE when the civilization fell and dispersed (Sharer, 1). Although much has been lost, the gods and goddesses and the religious practices of the Classic Maya give insight into their lives and reveal what was important to this society.
When most people think of the Mayans, they think end of the world prediction in 2012. Everyone knows the movie 2012 which portrayed the end of the world predicted by the Mayan calendar. What many do not know is that the Mayans developed three separate calendars; the Long Count, the Tzolk’in, and the Haab, which were represented by glyphs or pictures that were used in their daily lives in many different ways. The Mayans kept time in a very different way than we do today. The Mayans may not have invented the calendar, but they certainly developed it further, and still use their version today.
The Mayan civilization was located in southeastern Mexico on the Yucatan Peninsula. One of the first American civilizations, it lasted from about 1000 B.C.-1542 A.D. Their civilization flourished during the Sixth Century. They built many temples and over forty cities. The Mayan population consisted of almost fifteen million people who were all living in one of the many cities. The Mayan people were extremely religious and believed in multiple gods which meant they were polytheistic. Their most commonly worshiped god was the Maize God, or god of corn, as corn was the most grown and most relied on crop. The Mayans grew all of their own food so they needed to have useful farming methods. The one they used most often was the slash and burn method, which involved cutting down trees and burning them to make the soil fertil which was necessary to grow crops. This method worked for many years, but soon started to backfire. The Mayans were ahead of their time, but that did not prevent their mysterious decline which occurred between the years 800 A.D.-900 A.D. Although it is not known exactly why the powerful empire fell, but there are various probable theories. The mysterious decline of the Mayans may have been caused by
Thousands of centuries earlier the Europeans knew of America, the Native American’s entitled America home. Numerous Native American’s established empires and attended business with each additional, as well as fought one another. Throughout the historical period c.150-900, we learned about the domain of the Mayans. These people were very advanced in their system of mathematics and astronomy. Their religion practices consisted of consuming human sacrifices and that they studied stars. The Mayans provide just one of numerous examples of the type of spiritual practices that are implemented by the natives. Among all the natives, idols and detriments were common. According, documents that I came across in the past describe how human sacrifice seem it was “believed to encourage fertility, demonstrate play and to propagate the gods.” The Mayan spirits were believed to be sustained by human blood, and ceremonial bloodletting generated as the only means of creating a connection with them. The Maya’s thought that if they neglected these ceremonies, cosmic disorder and chaos would affect them. Therefore, these practices were extremely outrageous and dangerous to human beings.
The Mayans lived in Southern Mexico and Central America in their capital, Tikal, which is in present day Guatemala. The Mayans were known for their engineering, one structure they were famous for is their pyramid temple in Tikal (Document 1). This pyramid was the tallest structure in the Americas up until the 20th century and is still standing today. The government must have been strong and well organized in order to carry out such a large task. The Mayan religion had multiple gods and this pyramid was most likely devoted to one or used as a place for sacrifices. Another accomplishment of the Mayans was the creation of their calendar. An extra document that would be useful is one that explains how the calendar was created. The Mayans must have studied astronomy and math to a great length. Similar to the Ancient Egyptians, they wrote with symbols and pictures known as glyphs that were used in the calendar. These glyphs were gods, such as Zotz (Document 2). The use of glyphs is an acknowledgement of a writing system, which is another accomplishment.
The Dark Ages were a time of great loss in regards to the lack of any grand achievement being made in Europe. After the fall of Rome, it was as if European society paused, and resumed during the Renaissance. This was not true for the Mayans, however. While the Europeans were squandering trying to subsist through the fall of the Roman Empire, the Mayans were building great pyramids, making substantial discoveries in astronomy and mathematics, their culture was rich. The Maya stood out for its sophisticated culture and society, which is eventually overshadowed by Europe’s monumental resurgence during the Renaissance period. It’s salient that the Maya never had a time period in which their culture was lost, despite the mysterious abandonment of
...ries about Mayan architecture and the results of these findings have been beautiful pieces representing the Mayan culture. The Mayan culture is one of many cultures that are represented by works of art with only natural elements such as wood , stone , paintings , ceramics, among others.
The Maya civilization is a very important culture that has left a great impact on our world today. They are known for their written language, art, mathematical system and astronomical system. The Maya territory includes Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Belize, and southern Mexico. In these areas the Maya thrived in their religious practices, politics, and their use of the territory.
