When I look back at my life, I see the dots which got interconnected and carved a path leading to my interest to pursue Master's degree in Computer Science with specialisation in Computer Systems and Networks.
I come from a small town, Rabkavi situated in Karnataka, India. Right through my school days mathematics was my favourite subject. I hit the bull's eye by securing an out of out score in my final year of School. I could solve problems of class 10th when I was in my 8th class. Besides Mathematics, Science was my other favourite. I scored 97/100 in science.
The working of computers fascinated me no end and the networking of computers simply mesmerized me. This made me curious to understand these technologies in depth and to contribute to their further development. My good scores in mathematics and science at the 10th and Pre University level helped me in getting admission to the bachelor of engineering program on merit. In the engineering college I was lucky to have the guidance of a competent faculty. Seeing my interests in computers and networking I was advised to focus on subjects like “C” programming, microprocessors, data structures and protocols that are essential to pursue higher studies in this area. I took this advice seriously and started on my journey to realize my ambitions.
In my first year of Engineering I studied inter disciplinary subjects and Programming fundamentals with C. “C Programming language” by Denis Ritchie helped me understanding the basics of “C”. My grasp of the subject helped me top the class. In the 5th semester, I successfully organized an event on C programming, “Ritchie fest”. I find that the curriculum at your university offers an excellent opportunity for me to work with the eminent professors. I am interested to work with Associate Professor Yashar Ganjali, Professor Peter Marbach and Assistant Professor Bianca Schroeder. The University of Arizona's Computer Science Department is a quality research program. The most recent National Research Council rankings place the department 33rd out of 108 PhD-granting institutions nationwide, despite the fact that we are a comparatively small department. My interest in Computer Science grew out of my study of mathematics and programming languages. In my engineering, apart from doing well in subjects such as Data Structures, Object Oriented Programming, Database Systems and Theory of Computation, I was among the few of my peers who always set ambitious targets and thrived to achieve them. I have actively participated and won 3rd prize in my institute’s (Tirumala Engineering College) annual programming competition named ‘Code Marathon’.

Growing up in the late 90’s, I witnessed computers revolutionize India – we had cellphones and personal computers and the internet transforming our lives - and like most other kids, I was fascinated by them. It wasn’t until I took course on QBasic in 8th grade, however, that I really took a liking to computer programming. The idea of computer ‘languages’ seemed almost magical to me. Over the years, that proclivity for programming grew into a passion and led me to take more programming electives in higher grades. I also took the initiative to set up a student-run Computer Club in my high school and host our first annual Computer Symposium. My upbringing in Delhi also made me aware of the gaping inequalities of wealth distribution in our society and as my interest in Computer Science deepened, it only reinforced my belief that lean-technologies can help governments of developing countries in bringing their policies to the altar of execution more efficiently.

The reason why I want to follow a computer science career began when I was fifteen. Starting from a math-specialized student in secondary school, I riskily registered for informatics as my major in high school. Surprisingly, from simple lines of a primitive program to concise algorithms for solving complicated problems, everything was appealing to me right at the very first time I learn programming. They unveiled a whole new world behind the familiar interfaces of computers, explained many things that I used to ambiguously call “technology”. Enlightened by such amazing subject, I decided to spend more and more time for computer-related activities. I started training seriously for competitive programming contests, translated and wrote academic articles about algorithms for informatics department’s books. I also founded a small group of students whose members share the same hobby of computer but interest in various subfields. Computers and Technology have fascinated me right from my childhood and I have always had it in my mind to choose Information Technology for my engineering.
